Are you kidding? Every second year they try out Nylander at center. It doesn't work. Every time they pay him more they think he costs as much as a center, maybe he can play center. He's a 40 goal 98 point winger. Screw with that if you want, but the other three times they have tried this it hasn't worked. Nylander has taken almost 1500 face offs as a Leaf. That's sixth on the Leafs over the last six years. He won 51,5% of his faceoffs, so pretty good but he has had a lot of chances at center and none of them have worked.
Just because a player makes more money doesnt mean he can be something he isn't. Nylander makes a lot , he should be our #3 defenseman. He has gotten a fair shake as a center for the leafs and it hasnt worked yet. Sure try the same thing again and again and hope for a different result.

Centre and defense are the toughest positions for skaters to play. Nylander needs to be defensively responsible to play centre effectively. Although he's better than he used to be, he won't be able to slack off defensively playing centre. He has to be up with the play and back with the play. I suppose it's possible that he'll be able to be effective, but I'm not holding my breath. I agree Tavares should be the 3rd line centre, but I'm skeptical Nylander can be the #2. This exposes what happens when you're so thin on the development side. These experiements wouldn't be necessary if Dubas hadn't traded away all the prospects for over the hill veterans. It is what it is, but hopefully Treliving doens't follow the same track.
