Bure–6th round pick in 1989 Draft

  2. Razzamatazz14

I don’t know that Bure counts as a “steal.” There were extenuating circumstances there with concerns he wouldn’t be able to come to North America to play, IIRC.

Considering who went before him, I think Hughes was a steal.

Other than Bure, I’d say Kevin Bieksa in 5th round

  4. NinjaSlatz

Honourable mentions: Edler at 91 and Smyl at 40

Bure is the answer and it isnt even close. The better question is – who would be second? That is a lot more of a discussion. I dont even know. Most of our best in house drafted players were fairly high that worked out. Not a ton a big steals. Bieksa was a 5th… Had a few that panned out for other teams.

    Jannik Hansen
    565gp – 105g – 130a – 235pts from a 9th round pick.

  7. Jannik Hansen. Drafted 287th in 2004 (5th to last pick in a 9 round draft!), finished 22nd in career points. Doesn’t get a bigger jump than this!

  8. Away-Security-7689

Pavel Bure. The cloak and dagger effort behind drafting him and getting him to Vancouver is such an incredible story!

  9. 9OneOne_

Bure, but also Alex Edler and Jannik Hansen

Bure. Second one that came to mind though was Quinn Hughes. When he was still available I could not believe it….”Start the car!”

  11. oosikconnisseur

Of recent picks I’d say Demko

  12. VictoriaSlim

Bure is the answer, but the way we got the Sedins was more of a stickup type steal where Burke hijacked the draft to go home with the twins

  13. sasksasquatch

Bure, this should have been auto-filled.

  14. mtrutt91

I’ll say Hughes cause Detroit was stupid for taking Zadina 😆

  15. BBLouis8

Bure is the obvious answer and lots of love for Jannik Hansen. Some other guys worth mentioning.

    Harold Snepsts 4th rd
    Stan Smyl 3rd rd
    Patrick Sundstrom 9th rd
    Doug Lidster 7th rd
    Petri Skriko 8th rd
    Taylor Hall 6th rd
    Igor Larionov 11th rd
    Adrian Aucoin 5th rd
    Scott Walker 5th rd
    Kevin Bieksa 5th rd
    Gustav Forsling 5th rd

Bure for sure. Though if it wasn’t for the political issues at the time with the ussr etc he’d have been drafted way higher.

    Honorable mentions

In terms of the crazy shenanigans needed to draft both of them, the Sedins.

Jannik Hansen and Kevin Bieksa turned out very well as late round picks

  17. BentleytheGreat

Really no contest here – Bure!

  18. Aegis_1984

Bure. Canucks committed grand larceny by drafting him when everyone else thought he was ineligible
