I think Housley is a great shout but I do think Jay McKee should get a look. He was crucial to that era as a shot blocking defenseman and no one can convince me otherwise that if he doesn’t get a staph infection, we beat Carolina and Edmonton for the cup.

IMO, there are two acceptable answers here: Ramsey and Dahlin. Dahlin is the most complete defenseman in Sabres history. I don’t even think that’s up for debate. Ramsey was a defensive force of nature, who hit Gretzky in an ASG and was drafted by, and traded for (twice!) by none other than Scotty Bowman. My favorite thing about watching Ramsey was that every 5 or 6 games he’d join the rush and score or set someone up. It seemed like it never failed. If Ramsey joined the rush, the Sabres scored. But 95% of the time he’d just stick to a steady dependable stay-at-home game.
Housley , who judging by the updoots is going to win, is the empty calorie, « let’s give the Norris to Erik Karlsson » answer here. If they can’t be trusted on the ice in the final minutes of a close one, they’re a fuckin’ rover, not a true defenseman.

I think it’s already Rasmus Dahlin.
He’s great both defensively and offensively. He’ll likely never match Housley’s raw offensive numbers, but Housley straight up sucked in his own end. Every guy I can think of who was better defensively was nowhere near Dahlin’s level on offense. He’s a transition monster. He’s an elite passer. He’s fully capable of being that fourth forward when it’s called for. He makes everyone he plays with better. He’s also just a great natural leader.
