Split squad games are something the NHL brought over from baseball about a decade ago. It allows the organization to get an extra game or two of observation of players without congesting the schedule.
Expect a younger, less skilled team to be the road team, and the more veteran squad to be the home team in both cases.

Both, rookie team goes to Edmonton, vets play at home. They call it split squad games
