I don’t think much of this actually

  2. magikarp-sushi

I think that’s a rats ass of an excuse

  3. I mean, pretty spot on with what I expect, although I do think the goaltending will be better

  4. Fudge_Comprehensive

They’re correct in saying our defense needs to improve. However, ESPNs coverage and reporting on hockey is so pathetic that I will never buy what they’re selling regarding on ice matters.

  5. Resident_Rise5915

They do have to prove themselves defensively so it’s fair take.

  6. markcubin

Talbot is an upgrade over Reimer and I will not be convinced otherwise

  7. MidnightNo1766

ESPN’s « opinions » are trash, across the board.

  8. IMO one of two things happen

The Wings stay bad defensively and end up as a bottom-10 team

The Wings improve defensively and as a result get better goaltending and end up a playoff team

  9. Legal-War5595

Exactly. Defense was a lot bigger problem than goaltending last season. Fans who havent been around hockey long enough do not see the defensive mistakes that lead to a high danger goal opportunity for the opposing team. If Wings can defend better, they will clinch a playoff spot I am sure!

Other than the Madden quote that makes no sense for goaltenders, I think it’s a fairly reasonable take. The Wings over-achieved last season and now have a certain expectation attached to them from within the org. and outside of it. I expect the Wings will be in a very similar position as last season but hopefully we can get over the hump.

Cossa was great on a middling Griffins team last season. I know we have a logjam in Detroit for goalies, but I think he’s good enough to be a 30 game guy in the nhl this year.

It’ll be interesting to see what husso’s role is if he stays healthy. I think we’ll trade one of talbot/husso/lyon to a team that has a starter go down in the first 20 games or so.

This is about as bold as me saying I’m going to have a couple beers tomorrow night

  13. Mergan_Freiman

This gives « I’ve watched two games in March ’24 »

  14. Sekshual_Tyranosauce

Summed up: Their defense must improve if they are to be a legit play off team.

I don’t think that is controversial.

  15. GardinerExpressway

Is this bold in the slightest? Team that’s missed the playoffs and had terrible defense for years is gonna miss again and have terrible defense again. I’d say the opposite opinion is bolder

  16. TheBimpo

I’m definitely worried about defense and goaltending.

  17. I mean, I don’t think any of this is really a knock. If you pay attention it’s roughly what is expected. Although we absolutely can make the playoffs, it’s likely going to be a year where we push 3+ rookies into the league and try to find a goalie we can move forward with. That’s going to take some adjustments. I think this season is going to be super important because it’s going to set the stage for next season. If we can get to a place where we know, reasonably at least, who we have in at least 3 prospects and they’re NHL ready players I think it’s a baseline win. Playoffs are what we all want, but I just have to temper my expectations.

  18. rastafarian_eggplant

Yes that is true for the qb position, john madden. But in today’s nhl, you need 2 capable goalies so that analogy is pretty poor. Hopefully the best 2 goalies emerge and are chosen, and the team can be successful there.

  19. x_VanHessian_x

ESPN historically never has liked the Red Wings. Trash bag take.

  20. Basic_Ask1885

Shooting percentage will probably regress but defense should improve, and I think national media is sleeping on that a little

  21. HappyInstruction3678

I don’t understand how this is bold. They’re saying the same thing as everyone else: Detroit is a bubble playoffs team.

  22. Odd-Resolve6287

Couldn’t care less what the former Puck Daddy thinks.

  23. BlueLightSpecial83

In can’t say I’m expecting much this year. Unless Lyon (or anyone else) stands on their head and steals games, I think we are in for a meh year.

I actually wish we DIDNT almost make it last year. That was a fluke.

I don’t think we improve over last year. Hope I’m wrong but just not confident.

But hey, the other Little Caesars team has turned it up and is getting close to the playoffs, so who knows.

  24. Sorry_Return4889

    Saw ESPN and immediately disregarded

  25. ThreeDog_GNR

ESPNs bold prediction: They might be worse, they may get better. Heck, they may be the same.

  26. Biscuit_In_Basket

Good god damn ESPN will shoehorn football into anything . . . It doesn’t even make sense, QB’s and Goalies are not remotely comparable.

One is what your entire offense runs through. The other tries to get hit with pucks.

  27. kdfsjljklgjfg

I don’t disagree with it as a take necessarily, it’s that our D is heavily dependent on the ascension of Edvinsson/Johansson for improvement over last season, and growth of young players is by no means a sure thing.

It’s a pessimistic take, but I’m not sure it’s incorrect

  28. Nick_Waite

I agree with the fact that shooting percentage is likely to go down, but Edvinsson should also improve the whole defensive group/taking some load off of Seider. I see the wings right around where they were last year points wise

  29. robjertrichards

that john madden quote doesn’t even make sense in football terms… you literally need at least two good NHL goalies to be a playoff team unless you have one of the top 5 in the league.
