A lot of big NHL guys are talking. I think someone has started conversations, regardless of what bettman says.

I really hope so!

I generally think they know if they don’t Soccer is gonna move in and they won’t have a chance.

Only way that happens is either if they can get a new arena going in 2025 or if the NHL would somehow be willing to try Glendale again temporarily. In any case, I’ll believe it when I see it, but I’m not getting burned again by discounting seravalli.

We are setting ourselves up to be let down again 😭

Nothing’s impossible, but I doubt it. The ones in charge of the process are refuting these rumors, there are already two other expansion options confirmed to be in active consideration/planning, and we’re no closer to a stable owner or arena deal…which is why we lost the franchise in the first place.
I’m sure there’s active interest by the NHL, because of the overall value in the AZ market and the fact that a lot of NHLers have made Arizona home and are vocal about wanting hockey back in AZ. But again, there’s nothing to show that a legitimate timeline or plan is in place that would signify an NHL franchise in AZ within 5 years. Most of the things required to even have that conversation take 5 years, so this seems wildly optimistic to me.
I’d love to be proven wrong, it was soul-crushing to lose them, but I’m not seeing it within 5 years.

Owner + Arena = Team.
I’m not sure if that’ll get sorted out in 5 years or 50, however.

Don’t care. NHL is dead to me. Even if a Coyotes team would return, it wouldn’t be the same organization

Only Ishbia can make that happen. Nobody else is going to build a billion dollar arena without tax subsidies. AZ voters don’t fund arenas.

I know a lot of you are worried about being let down, but Phoenix metro area of AZ is the 5th largest metro in the US. It would make the most sense to bring it back, especially with an « installed » fan base.

Well the arena would have to start being talked about in the next year or so, so we’ll know pretty soon.

Look, we could do tons of things. We could have kept the team. We could have gone to the playoffs. We could do plenty to get the team back. But actions speak louder than words. By the time someone steps up to take over for the team and builds an arena and gets the roster made it will be 5 years. I honestly think the team won’t be back for maybe 10 years if that even happens. Trust me. I want them back. I never wanted them to leave in the first place but these things take time. It’s gonna be a hot minute before we see anyone even think about picking us up again.

2035. Yes, that is a long time from now. I appreciate Frank’s optimism here, and personally, I want to share in that vision. The problems are politics, ownership, and arena. Colangelo built AWA/Footprint Center as a basketball only arena. The VMC/Madhouse on McDowell was a hockey/basketball arena. The Suns have laws that protect them from competing pro-sports teams. It’s part of the problem that the D-Backs are having. In order for a Coyotes revival to stick, Suns ownership must be involved. That means that the Suns Arena must be a hockey/basketball arena. That’s not until 2037. The NHL put up with Mullett Arena for 2 years. And they would have done more if there was a clear path to a new Arena. The Suns could have a new Arena planned to open in 2037. 2 years earlier would be 2035, in the Footprint Center would give a temporary home with a clear path to a brand new building, tied up with Suns Ownership would give 3 teams tied up together and the stability needed, along with the political clout needed.
That doesn’t preclude a different ownership group from trying earlier than that. However, I don’t know where anyone would try to put a building. It’s a coin toss if someone can get that approved. Everyone has tried to tie the shopping center in with the arena, tying in with the Suns would preclude needing the Shopping/Residential income.
