I sometimes get the feeling that people making any kind of statistical graph or chart about hockey have decided to use the Flames a standard middle point. The maker of this graphic could have gone back further than 1955, but then it wouldn’t have been consistent with industry best practices that use the Flames as an anchor point for the middle of everything.
