I mean neither goaltending or defense got worse than it was last year. And Wings are only in convos about making playoffs (which is far given being 1 point out).
If people legit were saying they think we could contend for the cup then i’d get it but “most” overrated? I don’t see how that’s possible when I haven’t seen anyone pick them to finish above 4th in the atlantic.

I said it last year, I’ll say it this year, unless we can solidify our goaltending we’re an on the bubble team. Maybe we sneak into the playoffs, or if we miss, it’ll be just barely, again.
But I don’t expect we’re a contender. If we get hot maybe we could even take round 1.

As a Wings fan who consumers a lot of NHL media, I’ve got to say ‘No’. I do not think we are overrated, I think we are accurately rated.
The consensus I’m seeing amongst different NHL media outlets is that we’ll be a playoff contender, likely miss again but only by a bit, that we could regress (or at least that would surprise no one if it happened), BUT that expectations of Yzerman for playoffs are probably higher than they have ever been. Maybe that last bit is where this ‘overrated’ chat is coming from.
The team is ‘gapping’ right now. Its like when limes go out of season every year and the region they are grown in is changing. So, for a few months, all the limes suck and they get really expensive. Then, the ‘gap’ ends, and the limes get really good and a lot cheaper.
That is what is happening with the team right now. The veteran contracts Yzerman has signed are starting to get pretty bad, but most of them are almost over. Also, he’s only got what, two(?) of his big draft picks that have actually had an impact on the team so far.
These bad, expensive, veteran contracts will be over soon. And, more and more of the team Yzerman has assembled through the draft (which is always what he’s said he’ll do, build through the draft), will start make the team, and have an impact.
Right now, we are in the middle. That is how I think the Wings are rated right now.
