I think we can do better than glorifying a concussion-causing, penalized late hit.
I like to think we pride ourselves on being better than Trouba’s defenders.

Borderline late.
Take the hit on Mercer on the other hand. Late in the game. Never had the puck. Still got laid out. no penalty.
I think the problem is that on one knows what an acceptable hit is these days. Not even the NHL.

In fairness even the announcers thought it wasn’t late. This was not dirty and he didn’t target the head. Any hockey player will tell you, if the heads down going into the zone get the doctor on the phone.

Good hit. Want to see more finished checks this year, give teams notice that if you’re going to give it you’re going to have to take it right back. Feel a lot better playing in physical hockey games when guys like Dillon, Macdermid, Cotter and Noeson can be jumping over the boards to give it right back the next shift.

People who are arguing about the lateness of this hit are dumb. Peterka is moving at 20 MPH on ice. Thats 18 MPH faster than 90% of the hockey reddit moves on a day to day basis.
In a perfect world, with the benefit of both hindsight and replay, is it late? Maybe. Maybe not.
But I’ll give Dillon, a veteran, professional ice hockey player who never has had the label as ‘dirty’, the benefit of the doubt 100% of the time.
Hockey still is a physical sport. You can’t take injuries out of the game without making contact completely illegal, and even then, you’ll still have injuries. It is what it is. That hit from Dillon is not a head hunting hit. It’s a hard hockey play punishing careless offensive play from a physical defender who was defending his lane.

I’m good with that. Didn’t Nico get knocked out for like a month last season from a Buffalo player? So yeah, I fully endorse this hit. We need it every game.

Looked like a legal hit to me. Sad for the opponent getting a concussion though, but that’s life sometimes.
