I don’t see why we need to have a full roster, especially if accruing cap space is such a priority for management.
Mark Friedman played a grand total of 5 games last season after we traded for Zadorov on November 30th. I like Friedman, but he’s not going to play unless we’re load managing someone or two guys get hurt, it just doesn’t make sense to have his cap hit on the books.
We risk losing him to waivers, but looking at some of the names that have cleared recently, I highly doubt he would have been claimed. Even if he was, we have lots of guys who can fill in as an 8th D down in Abbotsford for some spot work

Doesn’t Patera have to be on the roster since they claimed him back? Or when you claim a guy back is it a free pass skipping waivers to the AHL?

So stoked Räty was given time and the coaching he needed to figure out his game! This is the way with our young guys moving forward. Let them develop in the minors with big minutes and support without the pressure of being one wrong play away from being sent down or benched. Build them up and have them demand a spot on the team out of training camp. He might not stick all year when the team is healthy, due to his waiver status, but I guarantee he will be here to stay next year!
