I don’t know what they have put in the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex‘s water but it seems everyone on the team has decided to address how the media and fans view them.
Anyway, this is another good read. Sullivan’s interviews normally give the vibe he puts zero stock into them but in this one he seemed to want to come across more intently.

The changing tactics argument never made sense. They have made changes, especially last year. That point always came from people who watch the game but don’t actually understand what is happening. The mechanics of a forecheck, why/when a player vacates their position to rotate a coverage elsewhere etc.
The power play stagnancy is really the only unchanging thing for most of last year. Deployments are a different discussion and I do think Graves, like JJ beforehand, gets far too many minutes. The kids never play argument always was born out of there being no kids worth playing prior to this season as well. Puustinen and Doc are fine but not needle movers. McGroarty might be though so I’m intrigued about his trial run with Rust out/

All of these narratives fell apart the moment any critical thinking was applied.

Fascinating interview. I did gasp when he was likening his potential tenure to Tomlin haha.

Maybe, just maybe, the fact that young guys haven’t been super successful in Pittsburgh over the past several years is because the organization didn’t have good young players……
Pens fans in general have overrated Pens prospects by a lot. Guys like Nathan Legare or Sam Poulin or Alex Nylander….. these guys aren’t Impact players at the NHL level.
Young guys like PO Joseph and Kasperi Kapanen were given oodles of opportunities to prove themselves and just couldn’t do it. Nylander has washed through several NHL organizations.
Young guys didn’t play in large part because there were none worth playing. The last crop of good youngsters came of age in 2015-2017 and they absolutely did play – Rust, Guentzel, Dumo, Sheary, etc all came of age during that time frame.
Nothing we’ve had since came close to the quality of youngsters that would be needed to make an impact in the NHL. DOC has been a success story but took a long time to get there. There are a number of promising prospects in the system now, which has been a huge shift over the past 2 years.
I think there’s lots that Sully can be criticized for, but not playing C and D grade prospects on Crosby’s wing for a 50 game tryout isn’t one of them

Yeah they’re doomed.

>I don’t think you hear that narrative in the NFL very much. There are coaches (who) are coaching in the NFL for 20 years in one spot.
24 of the 32 coaches in the NFL have been with their teams 5 years or less. 8 of them have new coaches this year. It might not be NHL level turnover but it’s crazy to use an extreme outlier as your argument.
At the end of the day sports are about results. He can talk big game about adjustments and speed and youth all he wants. If you miss the playoffs 3 straight years someone else deserves a try.

The reason Sullivan’s approach with youth has improved is because of Dubas. Kyle is someone who’s fiercely passionate about draft and development, being a former scout and AHL GM.
Their line of communication is strong.
That’s why we got 50 games of Puustinen last year. If Sullivan was left to his own devices, like how it was under Hextall, he would have just used some defensive plug.
We just heard Dubas emphasize how he doesn’t want a bottom-six who can only defend anymore. He’s pushing back against Sullivan’s formula.
It’s a shame Dubas wasn’t here when Ty Smith played well for us and got sent down anyway. Maybe we wouldn’t have wasted him then, and he’d be our 3LD right now instead of Graves.

How many times did Geno come off the PP? I didn’t see any changes tske place on the PP last year except, Take Karlsson off & put Letang back in. Both players had the same issues; couldn’t create lanes, CONSISTENTLY shooting pucks at opponents shin pads, turnovers.

Wow, guess the sullivan hate train is departing the station before the season even starts this year
