  1. At what point do teams say fuck it and ban these dickheads that show up to every event just to ask the worst questions? Shouldn’t the goal of a franchise like the leafs be to protect players from media like this?

  2. Blue_KikiT92

« STEEEEEEEVE » is what I think every time Simmons is involved. Papi is truly one of us

  3. __TheWaySheGoes

Gotta give our captain props for a 10/10 answer.

  4. EcstaticHelicopter

Matthews says STEEVEE the way my buddy says it to me right before he explains something to me like I’m his kid. And yes, my name is Steve.

  5. CMDRShepardN7

Steeeeevvve translates to: *Why are you like this*

    Dammit, Steve.

The NFL, MLB, NBA bring in more revenue, especially TV/Broadcasting. If the NHL figures out how to up their revenue in that area…

For every Prescott and Curry there’s a bunch of guys making league minimums, and for the NFL, don’t even look at what practice squad players make.  NBA rosters are smaller, NFL is a religion in the US, MLB plays double the games, etc.

Should guys like Matthews make more, sure. But the game is growing and teams like the Leafs prop up the league revenue to a large degree.

Along with the cap going up, the league could consider a franchise player exception, luxury tax, or other measures.

  8. Tremongulous_Derf

Steve Simmons is overpaid, that’s for sure. He should be paying *me* to read his dumbass ramblings.

  9. bimbles_ap

What sort of insight was he really expecting to get here?

Did someone tell Steve to ask better questions and this is the best he could come up with?

  10. Thin_Ad_9979

Sports department and otherwise, The Toronto Sun must have wild levels of lead paint in their offices.

  11. StingyJack21

You can’t even compare the other major sports leagues to the NHL. What a dumb question to ask.
The MLB, NFL and NBA are way more popular than the NHL and bring in WAAAAAY more revenue.
What kind of answer was he trying to get lol

  12. CorruptCanuck

    Pretty greasy.

Steve was clearly hoping to get him to say he’s underpaid in comparison to other sports so he could run with his answer and remove the entire context of his question.

  13. lLikeCats

I mean the question isn’t really that bad. The NHL is just not comparable to the other leagues in terms of eyeballs.

The league has so much talent but they’re still very much a gate driven league because no one is paying to get NHL rights the same way they’re dying for NBA and NFL rights.

That is the leagues fault. Scoring hasn’t been as high as it is currently in ages, they have so many superstars and yet they can’t figure out how to grow the game.

  14. flatlanderdick

Not necessarily under paid but the question needs to be asked if NHL players are being paid enough relative to their peers in other pro sports. How much revenue does the organization generate from all revenue streams and what percentage of that revenue is being shared with the players? Is it proportionate to what the NBA, MLB & MLS/premier league players are seeing? Fair inquiry.

  15. DrMansionPHD

Yeah Steve let’s ask a 27 year old multi-millionaire if he’s underpaid when the GTA job market is the worst it’s been in years, unemployment is very high, and there’s no middle class anymore.

« Steeeeve » is correct. They haven’t even played a game yet.

  16. I dont understand why Steve bothers. What did he expect as an answer lmao

  17. Well steeeeeeeve, I make enough money to buy your newspaper & send you to cover the timbucktoo titans, so I’m just grateful to play hockey for a living and don’t think about it that much

  18. Strangle1441

Simmons expecting Matthews to give him an Econ 101 lesson or something?

  19. TorturedFanClub

Yeah 14 Million a year. Poor guy. Lets start a GO Fund Me drive for him.

  20. Wanderson90

I do wonder what kind of money Matthews left on the table choosing hockey over baseball, though.

His own dad said he was a better baseball player than he was a hockey player. (Might be paraphrasing, but it was along those lines)

If Matthews did crack the MLB, and if he was a high-end talent, it goes without saying he could be making, double, or triple what he’s making today.

Thank God he chose the ice, though!

  21. It’s just so obviously an attempted hit piece by Simmons. You know he’s trying to get a quote he can recontextualize when the team is in a losing streak.

  22. InvictusShmictus

Now I know my response anytime some clown on r/hockey brings up this infernal topic

  23. elcabeza79

The fuck is wrong with STEEEEEEVE? He tries so hard to manufacture click bait. It’s beneath a reporter of his tenure. He needs to retire.

How he wasn’t forced to retire after being caught making up the Kessel hot dog story, I’ll never understand.

  24. STEEEVEEEE

But good on Matthews with the non-answer. The obvious answer is yes and the NHL should be doing better, but that’s not in his control

  25. SnooHobbies9078

The same guy that was up his ass about how much he made before, right? Your paid too much blah blah blah. Do you think hockey players aren’t paid enough. I understand the context, but the other sports make sooooo much more than the nhl. I dunno just thought it was funny. Bitch the guy is scrapping the team dry. Then ask if he doesn’t make enough.

  26. Anti-MoralePolice

“I make millions to play a sport, I’m not complaining about that. Also fuck off steve”

  27. SavoyJedi

    Auston basically saying this

  28. Sens fan coming in peace. This showed up on my feed and gotta give props for the way AM handled that loaded question

  29. PersimmonMindless

After what his use of Wayne to be little another Black hockey player, Steve should be barred from the Leafs press gaggles and conferences.

  30. NeighbourhoodParrot

Steve has zero integrity, literally just exists to set up people with leading questions that he can turn into tabloid level garbage. But hey even the stinkiest of beetles have a purpose in life.

  31. lionhearthelm

Steve: if the Moon were made of BBQ spate ribs would ya eat it?

  32. NotFrankZappaToday

Atta boy. Classy answer to a stupid question.

  33. VirginiaWillow

garbage loaded question, he handled it well.

  34. I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad question. It’s just directed to the wrong person. MLB, NFL, and NBA have all grown far more than the NHL over the last 20+ years and the revenue disparity shows that. When you have salaries directly related to hockey related revenue, salaries will be suppressed.

Why have the other leagues grown so much compared to the NHL? The owners should be asking that but Bettman has remained in place through it all and is seemingly untouchable. It must be good enough for them.

Hockey players deserve to be paid just as much as anyone but unfortunately for them, that’s never going to happen.

  35. Relative to other sports, of course hockey players are underpaid. But the NHL also doesn’t bring in the same revenue as other sports.

AM34 also understands that his current salary [along with other endorsements] allows him to live a very comfortable life. So he really doesn’t have much to complain about. Though it’s unfortunate that the majority of the lead is drastically underpaid for what they do for a living.

  36. carletondabare

Matthews would never say this but the Salary Cap has been extremely effective at keeping NHL salaries low (relative to other leagues).
