    I agree with him.

Right after it happened I was stoked that Miller clobbered the guy, but it became very real, very quickly that he was seriously hurt. Really relieved he was able to leave on his feet, thought a stretcher was coming out.

  2. It was embarrassing.

Any fan chanting that last night should stop going to games, you helped the flames, and made Vancouver fans look terrible.

  3. thedutchtouch

Couldn’t agree more. It’s just a game and nobody should be treated like a hero for hurting an opposing player. Clean hit and no fault to JT, but fans gotta be better.

  4. buttchunger59

I’m going to use my brain and assume our fans weren’t cheering because JT Miller almost got a guy stretchered off the ice. Must have be unaware

I was at the game last night, and instead of focusing on the fans at Rogers Arena, why aren’t we talking about how the situation was handled? Rooney was literally lying face-up on the ice, motionless, and no one—no one, not even his teammates—went to check on him. They went straight into a brawl with JT Miller, who, by the way, had laid a clean hit. »

(Everything happened quickly, but it really felt like an eternity watching this live before anyone helped him.)

Kind of ridiculous. Fans weren’t cheering because he almost got a guy taken out by a stretcher. They were cheering cause they saw a clean hit and then saw Calgary players go after him and come out unscathed. Timing is poor given the guy was out obviously but it was pretty clear to me this was not cheering an injury like many are trying to make it out to be.

I mean, it appeared that the fans stood and applauded when he got up on his own two feet and was able to walk off. So the bloodthirsty crowd went Jeckyll and Hyde across a matter of minutes?

  8. Gamesus10

It was bad timing for sure, but I doubt they were cheering for the injury.

It’s the home opener, building is full of energy looking to cheer something. Miller makes a big hit and crowd goes wild. I’m not trying to justify the chants but I doubt half the crowd even knew what happened to Rooney

    1. Our attention was focused on JT getting bum rushed by multiple Flames and the ensuing scrum (I’d like to think that’s what the chant was in response to). This also caused me to miss the trainers rushing onto the ice.
    2. Rooney was laying up against the boards and we (fans on the penalty box side on the rink) simply couldn’t see him nor the training staff until they quickly flashed it on the Jumbotron – once we realized what was going on the arena immediately became quiet out of concern.

    (Edited for typo)

I was at the game on the board side where he was down. The hit happened and then the scrum right after and from my perspective we were all focused on the corner and couldn’t see anyone was down hurt. And then Miller got up and ppl were cheering.

Until we saw a trainer’s head pop up and more trainers going to the ice, people started to realize someone was hurt and the crowd quickly quieted down.

Not a good look but a lot of people did not realize what was going on on that side of the building.

I think people were just excited hockey was back and probably were drinking and they saw a big hit from JT and I didn’t realize how bad he hit the boards until I saw the replay

Everyone needs to give it a break, tripping over each other in the game threads trying to be the most empathetic person in human history.

Great fucking hit, guy got rocked, he’s fine, the world goes round.

  13. Ill-Zone6670

I was in the stands on the board side and had no idea Rooney was down till the trainers came out. Even when the trainers first came out, I thought they were maintenance crew to fix something on the board. Everyone just focused on the scrum that ensued. As soon as people realized someone was down the crowd was respectful and there was a big cheer as he skated off.

FOR REAL. I love that our fans have become more engaged. But damn they’re bad at picking moments sometimes. Like the « Let’s go Casey » chant that immediately rattled him in the playoffs. I had to physically turn away from the TV and take out my headphones while they started chanting for Miller with a paralyzed-looking player on the ice.

  15. CommanderTouchdown

Classic old man yells at cloud.

Fans were responding to the general vibe of situation (Flames hounding Miller) and piped right down when it became clear the Flames player was in distress.

As a long-time broadcaster, he should know better than to comment on something that happened in the arena when he wasn’t even there.

  16. imaginexpand

There was a major hit, play was stopped. Until you see the player that went down back on his feet again, err on the side of decency and show some respect. It reminded me of when Mason Raymond was crumpled on the ice and Bruin’s fans chanted, “Flopper.” We’re better than that.

  17. Squancher_2442

They didn’t show any replays either. No one on my side knew what the situation was. I couldn’t see him out cold on the ground.

  18. stonezephyr

Im going to echo a lot of people here.

I was at the game sitting on the side of the ice where Rooney went down. I was following the play after and cheering on JT while he was getting hounded. I didn’t know someone was laying on the ice until I saw the canucks trainer coming out. Couldn’t see Rooney from my seat and they were not showing him on the big screen.

Was Don Taylor there? He wasn’t getting excited by the atmosphere in the building? He wasn’t pumped up by the music, lights, and action? That period was ELECTRIC in the building. That MASSIVE hit was felt and the crowd loved Miller for it. People were following the play, and for a lot of people including myself, didn’t know there was a player on the ice.

This is a non issue imo.

  19. shadownet97

I want to say they were cheering on Miller for the hit when it happened and the potential fight that may have occurred but I vividly remember the chant started a good minute after the hit and when play was stopped.

If the latter did happen, fucking gutless

  20. They were cheering for the injury. Vancouver fans are pathetic. Just like throwing a flag on the ice to stop a puck going in an open net back in 2004. Classless fan base
