I honestly feel sorry for the Coyotes fans. I sincerely hope that someday Hockey goes back. To "fix" that you have to honestly and correctly diagnosis the root causes. The blame isn't Alex Murrello. It's the market. Utah values and strongly desires to have more major league teams. When the opportunity arose to get NHL in Utah, the entire community came together, rallied, and actually DID what was necessary. LDS, Catholic, atheist, Democrat, Republicans put aside differences. If the NHL really mattered to Arizona, they would have gotten an arena deal done. I think that it was pretty self evident that if the Tempe arena vote failed, that the team was going to be relocated. THEY VOTED FOR A DUMP OVER AN ARENA!!! The elected officials clearly didn't care if the NHL left. The league ran / owned them for a time. I'm guessing that they tried to get an arena. Are they incompetent? Why didn't Matt ishbia step up? Or some other ownership group in the 30 years. Your market is dramatically larger, and more of a nationally recognized destination with the awesome climate. No one wants to step up because they know that that community and government not only won't help get an arena, but will actively place barriers and road blocks. If Murrello is so inept and the problem or cause, how did he get an arena built in Reno? It's never been the many ownership groups it's the community and government. Until that changes, NHL will never return.
I’m sorry guys. It’s tough.
You’re right. This is your team. This is your F**** team! You built this. You made this. How many years did you guys pour out your hearts for your team? It doesn’t matter if it’s SLC, Utah or Fairbanks, Alaska. This is YOUR team! Coyotes 2.0 isn’t going to solve anything. It won’t fill that void! The AZ coyotes didn’t die. They escaped their cocoon and are living their best life. But only because you guys believed in them SO much! You never gave up on them. Don’t give up on them now. Your team still needs you. You have a decision…pretend everything is alright and do enough to get by…or join your team, your family. Love doesn’t last 28 years…it last forever!
Utah has done a better job in 2 games than Arizona did in 25 years.
As a new Utah HC fan, I really wish this video didn't pop up in my timeline. Ironically I'm also a lifelong A's fan and my team is leaving Oakland
Leah I share the same sentiment as you. I lost my father and the scale of pain is different but losing this team was devastating and it’s a huge lost. I’m so happy for the players I want them to succeed but I can’t watch it’s just to painful. Hockey is my favorite sport by far.
Cannot support the utah team. Poachers in my eyes. Ill support the wild until somehow my coyotes come back
I completely agree with the sleeper team comment. I currently live in utah and was able to go to the game. I brought three people with me who haven't gone to a single nhl game. I told them as a blackhawks fan of 20 yrs have fun and keep an eye on them they might be bubble now, but just wait, we inherited it. The excitement in the crowd and around the building is what those players need and deserve. Utah would have gladdly taken expansion, but poor ownership showed their hand. With that being said, I hope you guys get a better owner, and Bettman won't run it back. In the meantime, if you need a place to stay to come for a game, come on by.
Wish you the best.
And thank you
I just dont like that Utah gets this cup contender and it was another fan base that had to go through the years of losing seasons and disappointment while they dealt with a rebuild while building into that cup contender, then another team gets it when the rebuild is done
Its about ownership. Vegas had a 5 year plan, they won the Cup. Great ownership in Florida panthers and Tampa bay lighting they have Stanley Cups now. Phoenix never had a great owner who cared about the city, and the team/players. If Arizona had a great owner, and a caring owner who put fans first then sucess would have followed. Its hard for fans to cheer for a team, different owners, different challenges and not knowing about the next season. Sorry for rambling.
Leah ,Tom and Roybn please move to Utah ! I know its hard but i love you're guys and gents
Leah my heart is broken for you ! Im from utah but i totally understand you pain
I've been a hockey fan my whole life, I've lived in Utah my whole life. I am heartbroken for the fans of the Coyotes. It has been a lifelong dream of mine to have a team here in Utah, but I didn't want it to come at the expense of another fanbase. I want to say that I understand the emotions you guys are going through but I don't. I'm sorry that the ownership of Alex Meruelo failed you. None of you deserved that, the fans or the players/staff. I really hope you guys can get a new, passionate owner and can get the Yotes back! Go Coyotes 2.0!
This team is something else, what was being built in Arizona is amazing, and we are seeing the rewards of the long rebuild now. They are going to be dangerous in a few years, maybe even sooner!
I hope that we can watch this team together, Utah and Arizona, Cheer them on together, and enjoy their successes together. But I understand if the emotions are still too strong, the wound too fresh.
I feel for you fans in AZ and elsewhere, and I'm sorry that it happened this way.
As someone who grew up in Utah and played hockey here I get the emotions of Arizona fans and especially Leah’s sentiments. I just don’t understand why you guys think we stole your team and you can’t follow them anymore? Hockey hasn’t worked in Arizona since 2009 let’s be honest. The NHL tried to make it work but Tempe voted down a stadium deal, you guys had inept owners and the NHL finally had enough of playing in a college arena in front of 4,000 fans. I don’t understand what you guys think was supposed to happen? In the end sports are a business and a business has to make money. This isn’t Europe, where clubs don’t relocate because they are owned by the fans, unfortunately sports here are franchises and a franchise needs to make money for the ownership. So please don’t blame us Utahns for what happened it’s not our fault. Life is short and I understand if Coyotes fans need to grieve but when you’re all done grieving, you can still root for this team in Utah. There’s no rule that says you can’t
This transition was interesting to me because I was cheering on the coyotes from Nebraska. I moved to Utah this year and my team met me here. I feel bad for AZ coyote fans but I’m also really glad these players are off to such a strong start here in Utah.
My main feeling is I hope the people of Utah appreciate all the hard work AZ did building and supporting these players
How do you think Jets fans felt when Arizona stole their team? We didn’t steal your team Arizona, Murello let you down and the NHL was tired of waiting another 30 years to make hockey in the desert work
leah your emotions are entirely valid, i feel the same way. it was a rough night for all yotes fans 🙁
I was not a big hockey fan until we got a team here in Utah. Through two games now I have been super impressed with the teams toughness, effort, teamwork, and grit. I’m sorry to the Coyotes fans who had no control over the situation, but we will welcome you here as fans until Coyotes 2.0 happens. Honestly I wish the Jazz would play as hard as the UTHC does.
As a hockey fan who has lived in Utah my whole life, I want to say I understand. I was just a kid in the early 90s, but Utah has also experienced the loss of a hockey team. It was just minor league team in the Salt Lake Golden Eagles, but we had a team sold away because the new owner didn't like hockey. My family was devastated as many Coyotes fans are now. Losing a team sucks, and as happy that I am that Utah now has a NHL team, my heart hurts for the Coyotes fans. You didn't deserve this. We in Utah didn't want a team at the expense of another fanbase having to lose theirs. I hope that Arizona gets another team and an owner that will appreciate them like they deserve. From a Utah hockey fan to all Arizona Hockey fans. There is room on this wagon. Your spots are still here, we didn't fill them, we've kept them warm and done our best to add more room for as many as want to be on.
This situation reminds me of a child being permanently removed from an abusive/negligent parent and being adopted by a foster parent. I do feel for Arizona hockey fans, and those of us in Utah welcome you join us seeing what this team is capable of when properly supported and allowed to thrive. Come join us on the journey.
Ps now that Meruelo abandoned his ownership rights, I’d still like to see the Utah team wear coyotes gear once a year until coyotes 2.0 happens to give AZ fans something to cheer for.
Here are my thoughts. I have had a couple of heartbrakes. Mostly from girls but also from hockey.
I was a Winnipeg Jets fan when we got moved to Phoenix. It broke me and hurt like hell but I stayed loyal to the team. I went through the pain to see my Jets heroes play in Phoenix but I stayed with the team. I have the same experience now. I love the team but it is painful in a way to see them in Utah.
I remember when the Cardinals moved to Phx. It’s always messed up but this Utah team is in a better place and no fault to the fans. They took the full old staff as well so it was handled as classy as possible.
Utah has craved an NHL team for so long. We were happy to get one any way we could get it. (The 2002 Olympics were how I fell in love with the sport). But I fully understand Arizona fans' pain. This is your team, and you deserved an owner like the one we have. I hope you get one when you eventually get your team back.
This situation highlights just how important ownership is. I hope for your sakes that a new owner can be found for Arizona.
Should have voted yes, they'd still be there. SMH
they are right. people should show some empathy of what these two are going through. they lost their hockey team. i mean people lost their lives and everything they ever had in the hurricanes that just hit Florida, but that doesn't really matter. these two lost their hockey team. thats what matters the most.
Im going to guess that the majority of your hockey viewership is from Utah Hockey fans.
I’m from Utah and this gives me mixed emotions as well seeing this. As a life long hockey fan I’m happy we have a team finally. That being said I now dream of the day that Utah has a game against Arizona.
Thank you both for this. I am feeling the same, Leah. Such mixed emotions. So so sad our boys aren't Coyotes anymore but I will watch them in Utah because they were OUR BOYS
The Phoenix fans are the husband who saved up for years, worked overtime to finally get his wife the b00b job she has been wanting for years. She gets them done and is recovered and she leaves you for a wealthy tech nerd before you can even enjoy them.
The points made in your opening remarks are 💯 correct. There are great and loyal fans in Arizona. As a 🇨🇦 I had the privilege to watch 3 games in Phoenix over the years and saw first hand how dedicated Coyotes fans were. Right at the point this great base of young stars was coming together, the team gets yanked and moved to Utah. I would feel upset and devastated too. Arizona fans deserve another team. I feel your pain.
I love hearing the passion in your voice as you talk about it. It's obvious that for those who cared for the team, you REALLY cared. It's horrible that your owner wasn't able to support it. But in Utah, we are grateful for the framework that was built for us. But from everything I learned of Muerello, I can't see Sergachev signing with them. I would see them taking Guenther and selling him for picks and players rather than signing him to an eight year extension. You put it perfectly when you said they have the owner they deserve. I hope you can be happy for the players and what they have the opportunity to achieve even if you can't root for the team as a whole anymore.
Utah fan here. Obviously, I knew there would be some pain for the AZ fans, but this segment put it into perspective. Hearts out to the AZ fans.
