  2. With a new ECHL team starting in Lake Tahoe as of tomorrow, will it be viable to have a AHL team in the same general area? I would not trust Mereulo after he screwed the Coyotes out of Arizona

  3. We need to have confirmation if Ishbia is heavily interested in Bringing the NHL back to AZ and possibly buy the Roadrunners. He sounds like the best hope right now

  4. In a few years Vegas taxpayers may have to dig in their wallets to pay for Allegiant Stadium. Based on the history of sports franchises. If a team is losing, fewer fans go to ganes. Ask Oakland fans, theyve had two teams.

  5. UNR basketball draws pretty well at their current venue Lawlor Events Center on campus (capacity 11.5K). Doesn't seem unreasonable they would continue to have good crowds at a new venue also. I get what your saying about the financing though. Seems there's always a catch.

On another note…I've noticed you haven't engaged any Athletics news of late. The new release of drawings for the Bally's resort and the grass saga in Sacramento have been in the news lately. I was hoping you might get some input on the grass situation from the groundskeeper from Oakland you just interviewed. Understandable if you taking a break from A's stuff for a while. Enjoying the other content your doing.

  6. Dear Reno:

Beware of anything and everything the Alex Meruelo or his son have ** anything ** to do with.

    Signed,

A Former Coyotes Season Ticket Holder

  7. That would be cool to see my Ontario Reign play some games in Reno. Reno has some great micro breweries and having a AHL team up there would make it even better

  8. "The project is expected to drive significant economic benefits……..". Every single project like this is "expected to drive significant economic benefits", the problem is, they rarely actually do.

  9. WOW…and I saw wowww! Mereulo wants the arena to be built without one dime out of his pocket,TIF or not. I see pushback coming from Reno on this. Especially, Brodie, when he already has the land. Coyotes fans should be glad to be rid of him. This guy is a charlatan.

  10. the GSR owner never said any public money. Now he's hedging. I live in Reno and hope they tell him to fark off and have UNR renovate their existing 40 year old basketball venue (which is on campus) and which is just structurally fine and just needs some renovations. (Lawlor arena). Thanks for covering us Brodie!

  11. Plus it looks especially bad considering he got 1 billion for a franchise that was only valued at 500 million, so he's swimming in unearned profit.

  12. This would have been a GRAND plan if it were to take place prior to covid. I'm highly doubting this low $1 billion estimate for the entire project and I believe they only want $97 mil in TIF…that'll go up as well. But, with TKM taking the ice 10/24 and though i give that at least 2 seasons; unless they draw well a Reno AHL team would cannibalize all the TKM fans. No need to drive up the hill for 3rd division hockey when we'd have 2nd division hockey…but wait…would Utah want to maintain an affiliation for AHL in Reno or would they want the Grizzles to become the AHL affiliate and be within miles of the parent club. We wouldn't have 2 ECHL teams in the area, so there is where another wrinkle comes in.
I think this would be an amazing thing for Reno, if it was all entirely privately funded, but not with public money. We still need to shoot down the State Bonds funding the A's stadium.

  13. Surprise, surprise… 😒…A billion dollar arena is pretty outrageous for a college facility, let alone an AHL team. Yeah, it'll stay busy, but not selling $100 tickets. And the impression that I get is that a lot of that money will be spent on casinos and brass plated shops for fru fru retail. And one more observation. If Meruelo walked with a billion cash from the Coyotes sale, what does it say about his confidence level in this GSR on steroids project that he won't even use that gift for failure as collateral against a 20- or 30-year loan which this TIF is all predicated for?…I lived in Reno about five years back. That GSR ain't the The Strip. That whole area between GSR and the Walmart on 2nd, and between Kietzke and the river is pretty blighted at this point. If UNR needs an arena that glitzy, that badly, let them dip into their endowment. I'm hoping for a public backlash on this one…Leave the Roadrunners in Tucson, Meruelo. You've done enough damage down there…

  14. I live in Phoenix & have watched Alex Meruelo & his sleazy business dealings. He’s a grifter & is only interested in controlling real estate that is adjacent to any new venue. Has no interest in sports & is only interested in lining his pockets-preferably with public funding- NOT his own.

  15. Mereulo seems like a pretty bad businessman. He bought the local classic rock station here in LA some time ago and recently decided to fire the two beloved afternoon drive hosts (who themselves had been fired by another formerly beloved rock station until that was bought out by a conglomerate). Apparently he has a manager at the classic rock station who somehow doesn't know who Roger Waters is? But he runs a classic rock station? Bunch of clowns.

  16. Nevada basketball does get 80% turnout in its current nearly 12k seat stadium so for those games it could work. I have no idea how the minor league hockey would draw though. I’d be shocked if the hotel tower gets built as the GSR rarely fills up its current hotel tower. Thanks for covering this story!

  17. Nevada is every con artists patsy ..Mark Davis , John Fisher and now Alex Moreno because the state legislature is as corrupt as it gets

  18. In another note John Fisher is looking for a minority owner for the A’s at 500 million for 25% …Since when did the 1.2 billion dollar A’s become a 2 billion dollar team ..Only a complete fool would go onto business with John Fisher

  19. I lived in Reno several years and absolutely loved it. Reno has a lot going for it…Tahoe is close by…Hiking and outdoors in Northern California…no state income tax and Reno does not try to compete with Vegas. I hope Reno gets this !

  20. I hate this MFing scumbag! He flew into our town, blew up our NHL team and walked away with a cool billion and now wants to blow up our AHL team. WTF did we need this Ahole for?! NHL Comish Bettman got him the billion dollars and let someone move the team to SLC just to get rid of this con artist. Reno beware! He can’t be trusted!

  21. Reno isn’t Las Vegas, that is why it is plausible that this arena could fly.
At one time in the distant past, Reno booked a lot of conventions. I wouldn’t vote against this plan for GSR. I hope it works for them. (I lived in Reno for 10+ years, so I might be biased)

  22. Alex a con, but he didn’t keep a billion from NHL still taxes on that. No owner or business guys pays for it alone anymore

  23. One guy trying to destroy 3 pro hockey teams – Arizona Coyotes, Tucson Roadrunners, and Tahoe Knight Monsters.

  24. LoL at the people who thought a billionaire was paying for anything he can get you to pay for.
