Question really is, is Matthews a 1st ballot hall of famer?

  2. Spirited-Avocado-777

Seeing that post pissed me off. They know exactly what they’re doing and what’s gonna happen. Trash.

  3. All he needs is to hit the 500 goal mark and 1000 points and he will be a first ballet hofer. So basically, stay healthy and keep going

  4. Cartz1337

    Hot take, right now, no.

God forbid he suffer a career ending injury before the start of this season, he doesn’t get in. So he’s not a hofer yet.

If he keeps in his current trajectory and the leafs have some success. 1st ballot easy.

  5. TayOs1998

I’m sure there are guys with lesser numbers in the hall right now

  6. TallFallicMonster

Yes. At least he will be.

  7. Lemuria_91

If he can maintain the pace he’s been going, then yes. If he were to somehow get injured and/or thrown off his game, I don’t think there’s enough there yet to say he would.

  8. Gooduglybad16

He’s a legend in leafs land and that’s about it. He’s got a long way to go. How many hall of famers have no Stanley cups to their name??

Will Matthews make the Hall of Fame when he retires? most definitely

Is Matthews already a Hall of Famer? not really, sure he’s had great seasons but he hasn’t played a full career of Hockey yet

also this is without a doubt a clout-chasing post from the NHL as they know without a doubt this will be filled with endless debate from other teams fans who will say he’s overrated and Leafs Twitter who is way crazier than this Reddit even thought of being, acting like Matthews will go down in history as the great hockey player ever to hit the ice

Base solely off his current stats I would say not. However odds are he’ll finish his career and be a first ballot hall of fame or no questions.

  11. BackhandQ

Not yet. Probably needs 5 more years of the type of dominance he has shown. Plus add a few more individual accolades. He will then certainly have a strong case. Even without a Cup.

    If there’s a Cup? Then he’s a shoe in.

  12. FluentInStroll

No but he will be. Might be one of the greatest with this trajectory.

  13. HockeyAnalynix

Needs maybe twice the number of games. Aside from Sergei Makarov who had only 424 NHL regular season games, most recent inductees have 700-1,500 games. Matthews could be considered an exception like Makarov but since he’s just in his prime, it’s premature to count him. It would be a worthy debate if his career ended right now, and there is a strong argument to say yes.

  14. He legitimately can become the GOAT of an original six team. About as surefire as you can be at this stage of his young career.

  15. OG_anunoby3

The Coyotes…. They be smelling blood.

  16. Hell no. You have to do something in the playoffs. Maybe on stats alone he’ll get in, but to be considered a great you got to play for a team that can do it when it counts.

  17. Pretend-Pepper-6295

You can’t be in the HOF if you’ve never won a playoff series 💀

  18. rideronthestorm29

haha what? the kid hasn’t done anything yet

  19. Red_Maple

Easy answer, yes. Any player who wins the Hart deserves to get in, at the very least to acknowledge for at least that one year in history this player was considered the most valuable hockey player on the planet.

  20. finaija

Good merits and he is on good way to there, but not yet.
He needs more seasons, and definitely more merits if he does not secure a ring.
All these young players mentioned with HoF lately is silly imo, let them play their career first.

  21. TheWilrus

These are silly questions but I will say yes.

If he plays another 2 years his stats alone will be enough based on the awards as well.

If he somehow never plays a single game again due to some tragic event, which all that would stop it at this point, then he probably makes it based on the narrative of his short career. « The lost American great taken to early who was let down by the Laughs organization » type of narrative.

  22. Top_Shelf_4343

If he retires today, no. Why are you on this guy so hard? There are other great players in the league. Does McDavid still exist?

  23. howsshegoin

I don’t see why active players can’t be in the HoF

  24. HowieFeltersnitz

Guys I bought some fresh baked bread from the market this morning. Is it already the best sandwich of all time?
