Mario wasn’t Canadian, he’s a Sayian from planet Vegeta. He was sent to earth to conquer. He was supposed to land in the US where his natural gifts for war and violence could be nurtured. But he landed off course in Canada and was taught instead to be a good human being and then to use his sayian super powers to embarrass others at hockey.
But seriously. I love this guy. He’s the reason I love hockey. He saved it in my city more times than he should have had to; but he did it. He’s one of the very few athletes I’d consider a real hero. And he did it all with class and grace.

Before I was a Red Wings fan I was a very lost boy in Minnesota that didn’t have a team. I’m told my first big birthday ask was a Penguins Starter Jacket so I could be Mario. I don’t remember it but my first memory, looking back, was building a snowman in that jacket.

Saw him in Quebec for a chrismas present with my father when i was 6 agains the Rempart in 84, last year before they went to Longueuil :,(
It was like watching a grown man playing children, he finish the game 4-4 in a 9-5 for Laval. He massacred us all season long like that (one time we lost 15-1, it was magnificent!)
We didn’t really cared at that point, he was just so freaking good and fun to watch. When he went in the NHL it was like seeing playing children again

I have nothing but mountains of respect for Mr Lemieux – both on and off the ice. He truly was one of the greats.

How about 160 points in 60 games in one of his seasons in the show? Would’ve been more if he didn’t miss time to have cancer treatments.

I wrote a paper in high school 1984 about rookie lemieux being better than Gretzky. My teacher said it was blasphemous. But to my defense he was at least in being a goal scoring threat . He went to a shitty pens team with Rick kehoe Mike Bullard and turned journeyman warren young into a 40 goal sniper getting 100 points as a rookie.
He was 6’4 and had insane handles, shots and passing.
Then his back problems came, he got cancer and the rest is history.

I remember once playing a year of juniors in NHL’s be a pro mode on a difficulty lower than I should have been playing and putting up like a little over 200 points. Then remembered being curious, looking up the all time points record for the league, and being stunned that I was still like 80 points off from the record.

When Mario was healthy, he was one of the most unstoppable athletes to ever play the game. He was truly something special
