I think the deal is absolutely ok for both sides. Everything under 12 million would've made me extremely happy. $12.6M is absolutely fair given the length of the contract.
Yes he has the highest cap hit now, but Matthews is up for an extension in 2 years and he'll probably cost a lot more than 12.6 by then. Marner is up in 3 years, even he might cost more than 12.6. McDavid in 4 year, definitely a lot more than that.
We now basically have Nate for the rest of his career at a price that might seem high now, but will be absolutely normal, if not cheap for a star player in just a few years.

Amazing 🙂 regardless of what he said back when about taking less to win, well he did that, and he deserves to be both repaid and paid after being the most underpaid player in the league and being the corner stone to build around and attract people here with, to start this all. Best team mate of any of the big top centers it looks like from afar too. I've wanted more of him defensively before, but it's just a mindset for him, he's shown when that becomes the priority, and he has the right idea at the right time, that he is amazing for switching with the D when they need, at playing amazing defensive hockey from his center position, and at breaking out from the defensive zone. A rock solid all star center, no question, a winner, some of the best playoff points per game and leadership out there. Rought to fit him in? Sure, for about three or four years it will be tough, and then after that the cap will likely be way up and he'll be potentially underpaid, and on the flip side potentially not his young self after that. But the rock he is, won't shock anyone if he plays like a top center for a decade still.

Na no contract hangover. Not him, guy was probably thousand yard staring the entire time he had the cup at home. Monkey off the back and 119 points, 54 goals actually. +61. Between moving rants, lehky, nuke, Landy around to keep things fresh, having no elite 2nd line putting the emphasis on keeping line 1 going even more, and the need for more goals from the top line, likely an extra minute of average ice time for line 1, plus a few extra shifts than normal double shifting for him… Guy is gonna go off universe permitting. I'd take him over any center overall and especially this year. Only way he doesn't is if the whole team somehow dominates like it did last year or if injuries rear their ugly head.
