Shame that Giroux left. Wish he retired a Flyer. 🙁 This team has been terribly managed since trading away Richards & Carter. Should of just kept them & give Bob a few more years to develop.
Still can’t see anything about The Flyers without thinking about Pelle Lindbergh.
As a 14 year old hockey playing swede at the time, I was really sad when he died.
I shared the link to this podcast with Bernie Parent on Twitter. Maybe he will watch it. 😀
Hextall was a good goalie.. but sadly should never have gotten the chance to show it with Philly.. The Great Pelle Lindbergh had just become what looked like he would man the pipes for the next decade when he was killed in a car accident in 85… I disliked Philly… but even I mourned his death. The 70's team had some really good players.. but even their stars (Clarke, Leach, MacLeish..etc) had no problem mixing it up… the only one I didn't see beat the snot out of someone what Parent..
Biggest moment in Flyers history was beating the Soviets. Not just beating the Soviets, but beating the Soviets.
Speaking as probably one of the senior Flyers fans here(57 years old, been a die hard Flyers fan since the early 70s) I can tell you that there's been a significant amount of bad luck with this franchise. Tim Kerr's injuries, Pelle Lindberg's death, Bernie damn near losing his eye, the blown offside non call in game 6 of the '80 finals. In fact, Pelle's death has resulted in a goalie curse of sorts and they've yet to find someone that is even remotely as good. Even Hextall only really had 1 good season. I do believe they're the only team to have 2 Conn Smythe winners even though they lost. For me the biggest disappointment in the playoffs was in 2000. They had a 3-1 lead on the Devils and choked it away because if they go to the finals no way Dallas beats them. 2010 was heartbreaking but they shouldn't have been there in the first place having qualified on the last day of the season and it took a shootout at that. I liken that team to the 1993 Phillies who caught lightning in a bottle. '87 was heartbreaking also because they were so close having fallen behind 3-1 then winning games 5 and 6(one of the most exciting games I've ever seen). As for Schultz, he was the team enforcer. If someone took a run at Clarke he took a run at them or their star but he wasn't just a goon as he did score on occasion including the series winning goal in game 4 of the '74 quarter finals. Now, in recent years it's been piss poor management. Ed Snyder with all his faults at least tried to build a winner. Now the team is owned by Comcast and I'm convinced they're not interested in winning.
Oh, let's not forget that they were the one and only true World Champions of hockey when they brutalized the vaunted Soviet Red Army team in 1976 when none of the other teams they played could beat them(Montreal managed a tie). And as draft picks go, I often wonder if the Lindros trade even happens if they took Jagr instead of Mike Ricci in 1990.
this organization sucks now
The record by Schultz with 472 PIM is actually the NHL-wide record.
Kinda surprised we don't see Marty Biron here
The Flyers of old were a force to be reckoned with — The Broad Street Bullies. Dave Schultz, the "Hammer," changed the definition of an NHL enforcer. Their arena, The Spectrum, imposing and to a Flyers fan, just as historic as the Forum in Montreal.
Bedard szn!
A history lesson where I don't fall asleep in class!
Brutal drafting and the inability to leverage financial advantage anymore will relegate the flyers to 100 years without a cup
love that hat where did you get it?
Well that was depressing. Thank you for compiling it though. Hard to look at their draft "success" and see how they won so many games as an expansion team. And this could be the worst team ever this year.
I'm surprised at the number of whiffs particularly at the top of the draft. While I'm not a Flyers fan they seemed to be better in the middle and the bottom of the draft than in the first or second round.
I'm also surprised at the number and quality of goalies they picked but they never seemed to develop. A lot of the Flyer problems (albeit not all) came when Clarke was GM. That was why I was surprised he dumped on GM Hextall. He (Clarke) could have done a much better job himself especially with the scouting/development. You'd like to think a good GM should have a draft class every year with at least 500 games all together (even if they were not with his team). Clarke had a couple where the entire draft class didn't play 30 games at the NHL level anywhere.
Surprised you didn't mention Reggie Leach being the only non-goaltender to win the Con Smythe for a losing team. In the 1976 payoffs he had 19 goals in 16 games.
When do they bring back those long pants? As if they can't become more of a joke.
Pete Peters gets lost in the sauce not that he was all that anyway just saying.
The flyers should have tried to get Gordie Howe in the 67 expansion draft that would have warp speeded their "Broad street bullies persona.
Pelle Lindbergh😢
Bobby Clarke had 1210 NHL Points w. Philadelphia Flyers; not 1218!
would love for you to do a career video on Bobby Clarke or Bernie Parent
