  1. I remember vividly when the Caps and Scouts came into the league. To say the Caps were bad would be a gross understatement. In that time period we were privy to 2 of the worst expansion franchises in sports history and they are the 1974-75 Caps and the 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers. I mean, they were comically bad. They were outscored on average 6-2. They gave up 446 goals. Ron Low, who was a middle of the road goalie, had a GAA of 5.45. Michel Belhumeur was 0-24-3. They gave up double digit goals 7 times. They were shut out 12 times. Their first 8 seasons they finished last 6 times and 4th twice. They. Were. Bad. They didn't make the playoffs until their 9th season.

  2. Would you be doing an NHL history 2022 version when you get the teams done? Referencing Cup Winners instead of playoffs, Dynasty years instead of “cup years” oldest/newest arenas, and winningest coaches?

  3. I really hope that the Capitals will go back to the "Diving Eagle" logo and the "Capitoleum" logo as 2nd logo/ shoulder logo.
Even the colors, but if not then at least the logos.
They where some of the very best in NHL of all times!!! What they have now = original logo is so BORING and uninspiring to look at. It's not a real logo IMO. Even there current shoulder logo is a lot more a logo then that one.

Washington: "Well How about just writing our name and print it in red & blue?
Response: Well…it is to be honest very lack-lusting and feels like it don't express anything about our team. Kind of lame. The Eagle and capitoleum was though the opposite!".
Washington: Nah it will be good. It's cheap and easy to make so that is good and what do you mean by identity? Well…. we don't care. Just do it!".

  4. Shannon, how do you define a pure goal scorer? While Garts was a great player, I don't consider him as natural a goal scorer as say Mike Bossy was. Mike G was a hard worker and very fast. He had a high hard shot as I remember it with the Capitals but there was a period where I remember him flying in on right wing and he'd get a shot off but it was predictable and he would be stopped.

As to Hunter, yes he was dirty, but he was also a good clutch player which sometimes I think gets lost. I would have liked to see him win a cup. He's the only one of the three Hunter brothers, Dale, Dave, and Mark, who didn't win a cup. Another NHL player I would have loved to see win a cup is Peter Stastny. Btw, if you haven't done a video on Stastny, that would be a good one.

Gus was a very good 2 way player. He would have been higher on the points list if he had been injured less.

No surprise Kolzig is number 1 in wins, though I'm a little surprised Pat Riggin wasn't on the wins list. His total puts him just outside the list at 67. He did finish 3rd and 4th in Vezina voting in his time with the Caps. Jensen tied him for 3rd in Vezina voting in '83-'84. That year Rod Langway won his second Norris trophy. To show how valuable Langway was to the Caps that year, he finished 2nd in the Hart behind some guy named Gretzky. Also I thought Beaupre played well in his time with the Caps.

And as to OV passing Gordie Howe, though I'm a Caps fan and I look forward to this, I'm also a little torn because Howe imo is GOAT.

  5. Langway trade has to be a top 3 most impactful trades in NHL history. Saved the franchise. Not a move Sam Pollock would have made

  6. While the Caps have faced faster teams during the last two playoff series… they’ve basically lost by A Goalie Error & A Missed Empty Netter, I’m hoping we go far this year

  7. Though he played 134 games in the NHL as a Cap, Pat Peake was drafted in 1991 at number 14 in the first round. He was talented but had severe injury problems.
As to Volchkov, I heard the Caps were trying very hard to move the number 4 pick but couldn't complete a deal.

  8. I don’t understand the “best draft picks” section. I assume we’re purposefully excluding Ovi, Backy, Carlson, Kuzy, and Wilson ?

  9. I've been watching the Caps fairly religiously since 1989, and have some random thoughts. 1. If Ovi breaks Gretzky's record, I think they waive the waiting period. 2. Mike Ridley was one of my all-time favorites, but I had forgotten how many points he put up. 3. Holtby had a medicore season in 2019, after they won the Cup, but I never really understood why they jettisoned him so quickly. 4. I had forgotten about Rejeans Savage. People thought he really was going to be a major talent. 5. Although he's a legend, I was never a fan of Dale Hunter. The points don't balance out the PM. That hit on Pierre Turgeon was unforgivable. And the Caps gave up the chance to draft Sakic for him. 6. Which reminds us that they traded away Filip Forsberg for Martin Erat. 7. I won't say the Caps can't win the Cup this year, but I think it's very unlikely. Ovechkin and Kuznetsove are still playing at a high level; Backstrom and Carlson aren't. Oshie is great in the playoffs, but gets hurt a lot. Darcy Kuemper isn't Braden Holtby. In 2018 they felt like a team of destiny. Now, they don't. 8. Frankly, I think it's time for a rebuild. And Ovi will still pass Gretzky.

  10. Such a shame Hunter isn't in the HoF. 3000PIMs and 1000pts. That's an undeniable impact on every game he played.

  11. I think statistically speaking they were the “worst” team to win a Cup in the tracking era. Just in terms of where they ranked in a lot of metrics

  12. I remember the Hunter time. Like Tom Wilson, liking a guy has a lot to do with if he's on your team. Fan favorite in Quebec and Washington while on each team.
One of the Caps throwback jerseys had the eagle a little while ago. Looked great. Just gotta keep the red white and blue.

  13. You mentioned one road win in their expansion season. After that game against the California Golden Seals, the team found an old beat up metal garbage can at the rink and paraded around the ice with "The Stanley Can"

  14. I was there for that last Oshie goal, it was so exhilarating, even though they couldn't pull it off in OT

  15. One big thing the Caps are doing wrong is their AHL setup; they need their team in Baltimore; not only is it closer, but plenty of Caps fans in Baltimore. Its a big market without a winter sport.

  16. Pete Peeters pops up on lots of lists. Not too shabby for a guy playing goal in the fire wagon 80's.

  17. Clicked on video because of the Rod Langway thumbnail. Didn’t work for him in Montreal so Caps picked him up. Great leader and player for them. Upset they didn’t include him when they won the cup.

  18. Today marks Dale Hunter's birthday, one of my all-time favorite Capitals and heroes from my youth back in the day, a DC hockey legend and (hopefully one day along with Bondra), a future Hall of Fame inductee. Proud owner of Dale's 94/95 game worn home white jersey with Captain C which always draws comments and appreciation from fellow old school hockey jersey collectors whenever I display at our annual expo in LA. Another well presented video, Shannon, love the blue screaming eagle jersey. I hope to see you again at a future So Cal meet-up wearing your Beaupre jersey!

  19. It'd be a shame if Ovi didn't get a 2nd Cup, but no one had more fun with his 1st. For the Caps, though, it's always been about their goaltending. That's why they haven't won more in the playoffs.

  20. On Dale Hunter, If I recall correctly he is one of two players to score 2 Playoff OT goals in series deciding, winner moves on, games.

Against Montreal while playing for Quebec. Game 5 of the then best of 5 round.

Against Philadelphia, game 7, go Caps!

  21. My wings ended Colzigs career when they were swept in the finals you never heard much from him after that.

  22. If I had a top 5 Teams list , the Caps would be there, I fell in love with this team during their 2018 cup run , I went crazy when Ovi scored against the Pens with 1min left in game 3 , That was the moment I knew they would pull it off

  23. I think Strome, Brown, and Kemper are really solid additions and keep the Caps going to the playoff and they look even better with Wilson and Backstrom healthy at that point.

  24. It's time to rebuild. Backstrom is done. Ovi stays until he passes Gretzky. Carlson and others need to be somewhere else
