I HATED Rick Nash as a kid, but going to school in Ohio has made me cheer for Columbus a bit more for the sake of my hockey fan friends there.
Ohio is the graveyard of US professional sports. A bunch of teams with lousy records over the last 25 years. The Bengals broke the trend this year, but will likely revert to their usual incompetence. It's funny, because so many great athletes come from Ohio, but outside of Ohio State Football, not many good results by Ohio teams. Always hoped the Bloojax would do better, to encourage more Ohio kids to play hockey, but it looks like they're doomed to perpetual mediocrity because their best players always want to leave. I guess Columbus just isn't glamorous enough.
If you come to a game in Columbus, I guarantee you’ll have a great time. The Arena District is beautiful and has fantastic food, and is a great place to hang out before games. The fans who do come to the games often have a lot of hockey knowledge, and many still wear jerseys of older, retired Blue Jackets players like Jody Shelley, Geoff Sanderson, and of course, Rick Nash. I even saw one or two Columbus Chill ECHL jerseys this past season, the ones with the sideways logo. Hope all is good where you’re at, Shannon. 🤙
2014 Penguins ruin the streak of all playoff losses, the opposing team goes to the final
I really thought the CBJ team in 2016-17 was ready to make some noise. They had a new team record 50 wins and 108 points, but just had to run into the soon-to-be two-time Cup champion Penguins team in the first round…
Maybe they can get Malkin
I've always liked the team on the ice and feel for the fans. They are the Wilds expansion brethren so I cheer for them a good bit
Thanks again man!
I was first off a Cincinnati Stingers fan and then had to wait for the CBJ to arrive on the Ohio scene. Yes, often disappointing season after season but still building their identity as a team that can attract and keep solid players. Torts gave this team their winning attitude and hopefully that will continue to grow as the CBJ now have a team that can compete and do so with talent and with some grit. Looking forward to the 2022 draft, who their first two round picks will be and their subsequent picks. According to ESPN the CBJ home attendance is 16,237, which ranks them in the 19th. position for the 2021 – 2022 season.
To be honest, when NHL got 2 new teams in 2000 I was leaning more towards Min and sadly that hasn't changed when though CBJ in general plays a more interesting game. I don't know what to make out of CBJ over the past few years, they looked like they could become a dark horse contender not that long ago. Now when you look at the roster I'm convinced that has to wait for a long time.
Come to Columbus and hear the cannon live!
As a Columbus resident, I have given up on the Blue Jackets. I will at times record their games on TV, but I no longer buy tickets or care about going to the games. That attitude (if that's what you want to call it) comes from the fact that after all these years I need a true run for the Stanley Cup. Barely making the playoffs, and then going out in round #1, is no longer good enough, at least not for me. I will admit that if you don't mind paying some money and cheering for the local team no matter how inept they are, then there's nothing wrong with being a Jacket fan. They have a nice arena and the cannon really is loud.
Nationwide is a really nice arena! Was a cool experience there when I went! Would recommend for sure!
Attendence is relative to the size of the arena. W
Tampa fans should thank the jackets for sweeping them in 2019 that sweep created a monster

I’ve always had a soft spot for Columbus, hope they manage to have another stretch of solid seasons in the near future
Love the goal-cannon, beats those songs, they get boring pretty fast
The order in which you're doing these history videos seems kind of random: Lightning, Red Wings, Wild, Senators, Stars, Canadiens, Blue Jackets . . .
At this point. I just want them to have some success so long as my team doesn’t get knocked out in the process.
BLUE JACKETS fans be like…."Hey at least we are not named The Blue Sox, right?"
Nationwide IS a fantastic arena! The cannon is second to none!
Oh my goodness! Nikita Filatov. There was so much hype around him. He started off hot. I think it was NHL 10 where he would turn into one of the best players in the league in every Franchise mode simulation. I love that game. It was one of the last NHLs where the rookies and the players in the draft would almost always develop the same way so you knew what you were getting with every franchise playthrough.
For Blue Jackets fans, one of the biggest draft busts was Gilbert Brule in 2005. Although he played 299 NHL games, including 146 as a Blue Jacket, reportedly the scouts wanted the team to pick Anze Kopitar with the #6 pick and were overruled by GM Doug MacLean. Kopitar fell to the Kings at #11.
Ive done 4 years of quarter season tickets and we drive 2 hours to see the Jackets.
Enjoy the team history videos; hopefully the Columbus blue jackets make the playoffs again soon.
The fans come out big time when we make the playoffs. When Foligno scored in OT in 2013 vs the Pens you would have thought we won the cup. Nobody sits down at home games in the playoffs … but that's cause we're so excited since it's pretty much the only two home playoff games until maybe next year, lol
When all you have to say about your team is “yeah the arena is nice, the canon is pretty cool” 😂
haha it's funny you mentioning Bjorkstrand turning into a goal scoring machine on the EA games, I swear he became a 50 goal scorer no matter his line mates lol
Columbus doesnt keep their best players.
Been a Blue Jackets fan ever since 09/10. Loved Rick Nash, a lot of the other players they had. Wish Bobrovsky stuck around, it just worked between him and the jackets.
Can’t blame Columbus for not doing well with the division they have. Islanders couldnt even make the playoffs either
Love your Jackets coverage, go CBJ!
mistakes this team did 1) they should've called themselves "The Ohio____" so its a team for the state and not just the Columbus area. 2) Shouldn't called themselves the Blue Jackets. The word or color Blue has NO business anywhere in Ohio, and especially in the state capital of all places. 3) This team needs to play pre-season games in Cleveland, Cincy, and Toledo to get more fans. Which they desperately need, as do most NHL teams do. Smart move having their AHL team in Cleveland though. It be the dumbest move in history if they moved their AHL team to suburban Columbus
Our big issue in Columbus is that The jackets are not OSU football haha If it's not college football in Cbus, half the city is writing it off. I will say, the Jackets do a good bit better attendance wise than the Crew, even with their shiney new stadium.
Go Jackets!
Next year this team will be a dark 🐎
Thanks for the love given to my Jackets!!! CBJ!!
The jackets are going to be terrible next year
As a Jackets fan everytime I think about our history I get depressed that we’ve never had a player that’s ever had a point per game season or we haven’t had any superstar since Rick Nash. But I think in a couple years the way jarmo is building this team it has a damn good future I think we’re gonna have some good runs ahead of us
General commentary from a CBJ fan: We trust Jarmo with the rebuild he has underway. He took his shot on Panarin and honestly should have gotten a lot more from it. The 2018 series with Washington we were up two games to none coming home and we lost in Double OT in Game 3 and then Ovechkin and the Caps never looked back on their way to the Cup. The 2019 series with Boston was immensely tough to lose, knowing Panarin and Bobrovsky were on their way out the door. But Tuukka Rask was fantastic that series and ultimately the difference. Some Columbus fans still take issue with the Charlie McAvoy hit on Josh Anderson in that Game 6 elimination game that was called only a 2 minute minor rather than a match penalty check to the head. Even if it had been called differently, it's hard to say the Blue Jackets would have been able to solve Rask in that series, nonetheless win a game 7 in BOS.
Since then, Columbus has been a victim of the brighter spotlights of other markets capturing our stars. As with Panarin and Bobrovsky, Seth Jones and Pierre-Luc Dubois also forced the club's hand and Kekalainen has turned those two players into Patrik Laine, Jack Roslovic, Adam Boqvist, Jake Bean, Cole Sillinger, David Jiricek, and one other defensive prospect. They've been forced to take their medicine and go through this rebuild, but if they can sign Laine long term (a legitimate question no doubt), Jarmo should come out looking like a genius. Other prospects like Kent Johnson and Kirill Marchenko are going to challenge for the Opening Night roster this season, that is why Domi had to go and guys like Gabriel Carlsson and Kevin Stenlund were not sent QO's. As soon as 2024-24, I could see them being Cup Contenders once again as the rebuild accelerates.
Great video, as always, THG. Cheers.
Anyone come here after the Johnny Hockey pick up ?
Watching this after signing Gaudreau is awesome, love that hat!
An interesting realization that the team they lose to in all their playoff appearances was either a Stanley Cup champion or finalist each of those years.
They need a rebrand honestly. Blue Jackets is awful.
Gonna be interesting to see Johnny and Patty take over those franchise scoring records.
If Doug MacLean had a plan, Columbus could have been as successful as Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, Chicago in the same window. But poor drafting and failing to tank when higher end stars were available killed momentum. Klesla, Leclaire, Nash, Zherdev, Picard, Brule, Brassard were their 1st rounders in their first 7 drafts. Nash was the only great one, Zherdev disappointed albeit still decent, and Brassard was good but not great before being traded to New York in the Gaborik trade. Columbus, like Nashville, needs a game breaking star forward who can put up 90 points a season on a fairly consistent basis.
