  1. Vlasic, for being a “defensive defenseman”, has pretty good rush offense. His hands are pretty good in tight spaces too.

  2. Jake Wise I think is a pretty good standout here. Vlasic to. Obviously all of this year's first rounders stand-out but need about 2-3 years in college/juniors/minors to really develop that game and physically mature even though. It's unfair to judge Commesso by a scrimmage, since in most pick-ups ,defense around the net and break out is usually pretty ghastly.

I look forward to seeing who gets the preseason nod. And if I'm being honest, I kinda wanna see Evan Barratt in a hawks uniform and Jake Wise spend some time in Rockford.

It's gonna be a tough 2023 without Debrincat, Strome, Kubalik, Dach, Kalynuk. But I'm sure they can work with Colin Blackwell. Max Domi though, I like him, but I have questions. A one year 3 mil contract is all well and good, and they'll need his grit, creating chaos in front of the net, but where are they going to put him in the line up?

He needs goal scorers and blue liners to get the puck to the net so that he can, otherwise, capitalize on the mess he'll create in front of a goalie. Kane has mostly settled into a pass first role with Debrincat, and Debrincat is gone now (though Kane can still score a darn fine goal). Toews is a face-off specialist that plays mostly around the board to get the puck moving too.

I get that defense was the weak point last year, but so was the power play… dear God that power play. Where are the hawks going to find the goal scoring? I suppose a rebuild is going to be brutal, but subjecting Toews and Kane to a rebuild at this point in their careers after 3 cups? And they had players on their roster like Artemi Panerin, Tuevo Teravainen, both cap sacrifices. A move like Debrincat for a high first rounder was unnecessary. Would the hawks even had to have moved Dach if they'd taken Bowen Byram in the draft instead? And then giving Seth Jones, who I genuinely enjoy seeing on the hawks roster, an 8 by 9.5? Til he's 35? It's just a repetition of some of the previous negotiation and cap mistakes the hawks have made, that got them into the mess they're now in.

This is all really a conundrum the hawks created for themselves. The new front office, I'm sure, is fully aware of this issue. And if I have one note for them it's this, find a player that Kane can use, don't expend your draft currency (because it's worth alot now), and build through the draft, not through free agency (swapping drafted players for veterans is not the way.) Veteran free agents are supplemental to well developed drafted players.

Best of luck in the years to come. Let's go Hawks!

  3. Just cannot believe Colby Cohen's ego had to creep in before the scrimmage was over, asking Vosters "how do you ( hockey skills) measured up against these guys?, KNOWING the announcer doesn't skate well. Last year, he tried one upping the play by play guys too. Just no place for it on the team, especially from someone who played THREE NHL games. Cheap shot! The less you speak, pushing the homer agenda, the better. $ more years? Wow!
