Hockey is expensive, I think is the most important point.
I liked hockey as a youth, and I wanted to play, but as a child of a single mother, I couldn't afford to play. So when I was 16, I got a job at a hockey rink. From there, I was able to get on the in-house league for half the normal cost, and, as a16-year-old employee, I was skating 20 hours a week, not counting practice and games. I got pretty darn good, but had a limited future in the sport as a 5'8" defenseman… but imagine how well someone could do if they had my same work ethic, AND won the genetic lottery. Sports has a lot to do with genetics, but work ethic will go a long way as well.
