Revisiter les St. Louis Blues 2019

Les Blues ont remporté leur premier titre il y a trois ans et c’était tout à fait la course par une équipe que peu attendaient beaucoup de cette année. 1. I will to my dying breath argue that this was the greatest storyline for a team winning a Cup…last place in the league, the emergence of Binnington from nowhere, firing the coach, "Gloria", the upsets in the playoffs, overcoming the SJ hand pass no-call to dominate, "you guys are f*cked" (Maroon), winning a Cup game in St. Louis for the first time ever (game 4, I was there!!!), and the absolute dominant game 7 performance Boston…to have FINALLY won the Cup in the fashion they did, man it was never more exciting to be a Blues fan in my entire life.

  2. You forgot to mention the name boom boom Gunnarson.

I like that you mentioned that Bennington wasn't actually the most consistent. Too many Blues fans in hindsight act like he just dominated every game and that was not the case. When he was on, he was a beast, but they were several games where he was off and giving up points. Don't get me wrong that's not to take anything away from him winning the cup or that run the blues had after he started

  3. While the O'Reilly trade hurt Buffalo in the short term (the whole Conn Smythe thing…), Tage Thompson just scored 38 goals and 68 points this season, and is Buffalo's top center. Sort of makes up for it.

  4. I was not a big Gunnarsson fan for most of his tenure with the Blues, but I thought he played very well in the playoffs that year and that's not because of the OT goal.

  5. I was a freshman in high school their first year in St. Louis in 1967-1968 so have seen them all. Outside of Glenn Hall and Jacques Plante their early years the Blues goalies just were not able to cut it for a long playoff run. Team depth also an issue. Jordan Binnington was the real MVP for this 2019 season in my opinion as they finally had a hot goalie for the playoffs. This past season after a poor regular season Jordan Binnington was again a hot goalie starting at the end of the season and the Blues would have even lost in the first round to Minnesota with Husso as goalie. It all changed with the Kadri injury of Binnington. I appeciated the assessment by the Hockey Guy following the game on the play saying the only thing for certain was Rosen did not push Kadri in to Binnington causing the injury and the player intent by Kadri would be discussed for many years. I still believe the Blues would have been the team that would have beaten Colorado this year with no disrepect to the Avs but Binnington can be a dominant yet streaky goalie capable of controlling a game like how Bob Gibson pitched many years for the Cardinals. Remember that game 7 performance versus Boston by Binnington. The last to first run by the Blues in 2019 was amazing and I would say did have better defense than the 2021-2022 team that had better offense. Good assessment on the 2019 team.

  6. 2019 Blues were a One -Off Cup win.. ..will be remembered as a fluke run…..much like Boston's One – Off cup a decade ago. One and Done. ✅

  7. the one thing I remember about that run was it looked like a power play everytime the blues had it, that 5on 5 play was ridiculous. the only reason the final went 7 is because they had no answer for that Bruins pp, which was just ridiculous

  8. As a life long Blues Fan I really appreciate your video! Love your content and depth. But yes Mike Yeo getting fired and Craig’s promotion were critical!

  9. I I agree! Binnington will always be known as the guy that won the blues first cup single handed. We know that’s not true. But legend is a subjective.

  10. Couple things..
First off, if you look at their playoff history, the Blues would make it to the third round once every 15 years, like clockwork. The years in between would just be a slew of first and second round exits. In 2019 we weren't scheduled to win 2 rounds until 2031, I was way caught off guard when they made it past the second round..

Second, I'd like to take a moment to mention the way Berube handled the infamous hand pass to end the Sharks game. He didn't berate the refs during the press conference, and you know they took notice. Now how much do you think that played a part in the final when he said something about the calls and got a noticeable response.

  11. God that watch party in St. Louis was something else. St. Louis went bonkers that night it was something I will remember forever good times

  12. As an LA Kings fan thank God they beat the Bruins that year I was seriously sick and tired of Boston win a championship in 2018 and 2019

  13. Seen a few snarky comments from Avs fans. In their cold dark little hearts they know they dodged a bullet when Kadri purposely injured Binnington, paving the way for a sweep of the McDavids and a puck-luck fueled win against Tampa. Blues are living rent-free in the heads of many Avs fans.

  14. What a storybook of a ride this was. Watching the area come alive that spring was just as fulfilling as watching the games. My dad and I had row 10 seats at the only home finals win, and I got home from band practice on my birthday to watch them win the cup. I’ll always remember exactly how that moment went down.

  15. If only Parayko played the way in 2019 we might have made it past the second round. Instead 3 shitty ass goals against for a stupid CP move. I was so high on him coming into the year but what a let down that was. Binnington definetly was playing his game in the playoffs but of course Kadri is involved in an injury go figure. Nevertheless, there is always next year. We need our younger players to continue to step up and play hard. Getting Leddy back would be awesome. Getting Faulk and Krug really helped..too bad we didn't get to see Krugs much in the playoffs. He is definetly a dynamic player. When the Blues are healthy they are alot to handle.

  16. As a Bruins fan this hurt. But not as much to me as others. The story of them getting on a run, making the playoffs and just kept on winning is a good one. I was actually watching Bennington and Blaise play for the Rampage in the AHL that season. So when the Blues started their roll I was actually cheering for them in the West. Sometimes things just click and you have what they had that year. Everyone on that team was well deserving of winning the Cup.

  17. Drove from Chicago to my hometown of St Louis to watch game 7 with my family. Then went to a bar and met up with my best friend and partied all night.

He has since passed from this Earth and I miss him to death. The summer of 2019 will forever remain special to me. And I hope the Blues never win a cup again. Nothing will ever top that season.

And I’ve been a Blues fan since 1993.

  18. And remember, one of the best parts of that run was seeing Brett Hull completely hammered pretty much throughout the entire length of the Finals and then all of that Summer.

    We Went Blues!!!!!!!

  19. The last time I had a good playoff bracket. Had the Blues winning that year. Since then, I’ve had to seriously reconsider what I know about hockey

  20. As a lifelong Blues fan I was 37 when they won in 2019. As you said, year after year of disappointment. As a teen in the mid 90s watching them get bounced over and over again even when they had Pronger, Hull and the Great One. Just never could do it. (Det was always better) Then when Hitchcock took over they still couldn't. Finally….it happend. I stood there in my living room with my hands on my head in disbelief. When Petrangelo raised the cup I literally screamed aloud in my house in front of my wife and daughter and my eyes welled up. People were outside banging pots and pans and shooting off fireworks lol. All those years of heartbreak for us here and they finally won a cup. Over a million people came to the city for the parade. Amazing. Hopefully they have more to come. Lots of good teams out there and Col obviously is a problem lol. Was a great time to be a Blues fan. Still is. Ok..sob story over😊

  21. The last time I was happy with a Stanley Cup winner. The 2020's have been very unkind to me.

  22. My dad is a life long Blues fan, I'm so glad he got to see them win the cup!

  23. When you realize the Blues lost in 6 to the eventual champs this year, you realize the Blues still have potential

  24. I actually believe St. Louis is better now than they were in 2019. Their defense is significantly less impressive, but their offense is so much better. If they hadn't had to face Colorado which was simply an absolute juggernaut this season and maybe had some better luck injury wise I think they could've easily won another cup this year.

  25. What did it for me was seeing Blues players give Laila Anderson her very own Stanley Cup ring. Water works.

    Hey Shannon, play "Gloria."

  26. The fans saw Gretzky have it, lose it…2019 was just amazing. Glorious if you will.

  27. Hard to believe this team went into the calendar year of 2019 with the worst record in the league. The Stars were the only team during their run who had them on the brink and blew it. Smh

  28. I'm just wondering, could Vegas pass Colorado, St. Louis, Boston if they pass San Jose? That's a thing to think about. The 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs are the most unpredictable playoffs I've ever seen. San Jose and Columbus were THE REASONS, why there was no TB-VGK final. The SJ-VGK and CBJ-TB series were game-changers

  29. The Blues drank from the goblet in 2019 and ZILCH since then. What happened?? Not exactly the hallmark of a great team. Tampa Bay ate everyone's lunch until Colorado won it this year – beating the Blues en route to a victory parade. Are the Blues really done? What happened? The window of opportunity seems to have closed. Farewell St. Louis.

  30. As a Boston fan that was a really disappointing cup final performance in the end. I think the Bruins were the better team overall and it showed in the first six, but they decided to absolutely implode in the deciding game.

Can't take away anything from STL though, they deserved to be there and didn't choke like my team did. I've got a little salt from the non-call in game 5 but not enough to say it wasn't a deserved cup win.

  31. In 2014 I picked a new favourite team that hasn’t won a Stanley cup yet because I wanted to see them win one in my lifetime and I chose St. Louis, damn that was a good series I was ready to be upset by Boston too I almost didn’t want to watch the last game

  32. This was a team victory. I believe that if any of the top 12 forwards, 6 defenseman, or goalie hadn't been with the team for the duration of the run, they don't win it all. Someday I hope they put a bronze statue of the entire 1st Cup winning team and primary couching staff outside the building. It shouldn't be just one player holding the Cup.

Interesting side note, Ryan O'Reilly played with a cracked rib from the Dallas series through the final round and still won the Conn Smyth.

  33. Kyrou was not on that team. 2 guys you missed – Robby Fabbri and Sanford. Binnington was the reason we won the cup, hands down. No Binnington, no cup. And if Kadri didn't injure him this year, the Blues would have hoisted Lord Stanley again.
