  1. Wild issue is defense goaltending and center. Other than that I think the wild fixed their head coaching by getting rid of brunette in the locker room. Getting rid of problem players like suter. Now it's just fixing the 3 problems I said above. Maybe a new goalie coach. Bill Guerin has done wonders with the team sucks he couldn't keep fiala but that's how it goes. I'm sure he's working on something right now with the draft coming up and I hope we'll see some good come out for the wild. The only player that is somewhat a problem is dumba he needs work and a better defense partner that can bring him in a little and take away the assistant captain from him. Spurgeon needs to be a tougher captain. It showed in the blues game where he let the blues talk up the refs and complain and what not. So he needs to step up in a big way. Other than that not much just some softness to work on by that giving up soft plays and passes. The wild are getting tougher like to see them expand that especially how the western conference is and how the central devision built.

  2. Thanks for covering the Wild sir. That being said, as a lifelong Wild fan, it just looks like more of the same for (probably) the next half decade or so. Good, but never good enough. We're forever stuck in this limbo of not being good enough to make it past the first round of the playoffs, but never bad enough that we can just tank for top 5 draft picks. So we're forever perpetuating this standard of mediocrity, which I believe permeates all of the Minnesota sports as a whole at this point (Wild, Vikings, Twins, Timberwolves). I think I saw a recent post that said that Minnesota now holds the current record for the longest drought for any city/state that has a team for all 4 professional men's sports franchises (NHL, NFL, MLB, NBA, or screw it, let's throw the MLS in there as well) WITHOUT a championship finals appearance, going all the way back to when the Twins won the 1991 World Series. That's now 31 years since we've had anything to cheer about.

I would say that Guerin made the right call in buying out Parise and Suter's contracts. Parise's numbers were declining fast and Suter's personality off the ice wasn't great (all he ever did was complain, but then still try to be the "big stick" in the locker room). They were happy to just get paid and go through the motions. But now, as you see with the Fiala trade, we are in cap hell for the next 3 years. It'll be tough to keep the current core together through this time and still stay competitive. In my honest opinion, I kind of hope we just tank these next 3 seasons. So that way we get some stellar draft picks and can have a resurgence around 2025/2026. But that being said, our drafting has certainly NOT been spectacular over the years.

I'm surprised to hear that you think that the Wild have "drafted well". Because aside from Gaborik, Koivu, Bouchard, Brodin, Dumba, and Eriksson Ek, none of our first round draft picks have made huge, significant impacts for the team. I made mention of this before back on your redrafting of the 2005 NHL entry draft video. Whoever was in charge of scouting/drafting for Minnesota between 2000-2010 must have been high when making their selections. In '04, the Wild pick A.J. Thelen 12th overall, missing out on guys like Drew Stafford, Alex Radulov, Alex Goligoski, and Alex Edler. In '05, the Wild pick Benoit Pouliot 4th overall, missing out on guys like Carey Price, Anze Kopitar, Tuuka Rask, and T.J. Oshie. In '06, the Wild pick James Sheppard 9th overall, missing out on Claude Giroux, Semyon Varlamov, Nick Foligno, and Brad Marchand. '07, Wild pick Golton Gillies 16th overall, missing out on Max Pacioretty, David Perron, P.K. Subban, and Wayne Simmonds. '08, Wild pick Tyler Cuma 23rd overall, missing out on John Carlson, Roman Josi, Adam Henrique, and Braden Holtby. You get the point.

What it all boils down to is just having all the right pieces and making all the right moves at the right times. Between 2004-2012, the Wild didn't do that. We then took a chance on Parise and Suter. It looked promising at the time, but those contracts were ridiculous. They never should've been offered that much for that long. It just handcuffed us from the start. So now we're back to where we started once again. Good, but never good enough. Let's just hope Kaprizov doesn't get too bored while he's here waiting for the rest of the team to play catch up.

  3. Being in MN, there hasn’t been as much buzz about this team when Guerin took over since they made the run in 2003. For a few years there despite selling out consistently there just wasn’t that feeling in the air like the team was going to do anything. Guerin has completely transformed this franchise into something worth talking about.

  4. This year took a little out of me as a fan. A decade of watching the same old story is tiring, especially when we really should've won that first round this year, mightve kept Fiala is if he didn't disappear in the playoffs

    Thanks again man!

  5. just an FYI, getting Charlie Coyle in the Brent Burns trade eventually led to drafting Jesper Wallstedt, so assuming Wallstedt isnt a bust, I think im ok with the trade

  6. 100% correct Shannon on why the Wild haven’t made that next step. They’ve always been decent and have never had those top picks to jump start the roster. I always give my buddy who’s a Chicago Blackhawks fan crap because the reason they had Toews and Kane is because they sucked for so long to get those high draft picks. The reason they have those championships.

  7. I appreciate the fact that THG acknowledge the fact that the Minnesota North Stars should have never moved to Dallas. Gary Bettman wasn't yet the commissioner of the NHL when Norm Green agreed to move the North Stars to Dallas.

  8. I really hope Kaprizov is around when the Wild finally do make a run but aside from the cap hell we're in, the West and specifically the Central is tough as hell. It's such a tight division. Wild are coming off of their best season as a franchise and there's every chance we won't make the playoffs next year. Which is basically every Minnesota team. We're the top of the middle of the pack. Never big enough to make a run and never bad enough to get some help.

  9. Wild fans are the leaf fans of the west, "this is our year" followed up by 6 straight first round exits

  10. Good review, hopefully the wild do something big in the next few years but it's going to be tough till the dead cap is off of the books.

  11. Hey the state of Minnesota will get something soon! Don’t Minnesota State University have a good hockey team though?

  12. At this point I just hope to see the wild win one cup before I die.

  13. Lifelong Wild and North Stars fan here. No self-respecting MN hockey fan followed the team to Dallas. Maybe some of the players, but not the team. The 90's were a hockey drought for MN to be sure.

When I hear talk of draft picks and getting in as early as possible, I think of players like Kaprizov and Pavel Datsyuk. Both were drafted pretty deep, and both have talent above and beyond normal.

  14. I know Kaprizov has a contract but how much longer will he want to stay in Minnesota with Fiala gone to LA & the cap hell that the team is in.

  15. As a die hard fan household, I would love to say success is just around the corner. However, the cap hell that is upon us makes it so much harder. If we can hang on to our great players, have some of our up and comers grow into their own, we could be successful. It all hinges on people not needing the money that we don't have.

  16. When the Wild first came into the league they ended up in the old North West division, My goodness were 9:15pm puck drops horrible for building excitement for an expansion team.

  17. Remember in 2014 when Wild fans were sure they would win a cup before the Avs win again? Never even made a SCF.

  18. One word: Poverty

Ok some more words: Once Kaprizov bails they won’t be remotely watchable for 20 more years

  19. If we made it to the finals I think the xcel will be louder than this years finals by far

  20. Also known as a
    "A History of Futility."
The WORST TEAM NAME of all the Big 4 professional sports team names in North America coupled with one of The WORST logos.

The WILD….LOLOOLOL. Even The Kraken are laughing at that one….

  22. So apparently on October 16, the Blackhawks and Wild are playing a game in Wisconsin?
    Thoughts on that?

  23. I have a lot of respect for the Wild. I stayed up so late to watch them close out the Avs in '03, and still root for them to put together a good playoff run. Brunette earns a spot in my top 10 for the quirk of being the last player to score on Patrick Roy.

  24. I really want to put my hopes into a box and never open the lid but 2022 season really opened the lid again. I HOPE we could make a run in the next 3-5 years. LA scares me tho, them acquiring fiala is gonna help them. I fear they're the team to best in the west in the next couple years. Either way I just want ONE championship. When that day comes I'll die happy.

  25. The Wild have spent many years as the middle of the pack poster child. Make the playoffs as an 8 seed; never bottom out; pick in the middle of the draft.
I have never enjoyed Minnesota professional hockey even half as much as I did this year!

  26. As a life long fan the pain of my
Northstars is still there. They move to
    Dallas and win the cup.
Are current regime with Billy we trust
And Gill Brandt who I believe is the best
    Talent evaluation we've ever had
I have some hope again although I question Everson moves in the playoffs
    Last year has me wondering
What the hell is he smoking.
Playing Dumba with 2 broken ribs
    Starting fleur instead of Talbot
Coaching decisions was why we lost
    Last year.
Now the Wild have a true super star
That we have never had are farm is loaded and players to look forward too
Boldy would have won the Calder last
He just didn't get enough games in
    This year it's Marco Rossi
And I believe jester will be at first shot
Fleur has lost his glove hand
He's a shadow of what he use to be
That being said the Wild will take second again and lose in the first round again
    God. Help us

  27. At least Minnesota sports fans have the Lynx to look fondly on.
