I think there's an expectation in a tank & rebuild strategy that it's a linear progression to competitiveness. I think that's rare. (Chicago Black Hawks?) And I don't put much stock in non-playoff teams having a strong finish to a season they know is already done. I see that every season from one non contending team or another, and next season they are about as good as they were the previous November. Sens fans might see the light at the end of the tunnel, but it's still a long tunnel.
I am very interested in seeing how they structure the defense next season, lots of guys, not a lot of spots.
Ottawa has finished dead last in the NHL in attendance in each of the last 2 (non-bubble) seasons. If they were a US-based team everyone would be clamoring to move them to Quebec. But Canadian fans only want to see QC get a team if it's at the expense of, say, Florida – who averaged 15k this year (better than three Canadian teams) or Arizona, who hasn't been decent in a decade (but should probably move if the Tempe plan falls through.) American fans don't root for Canadian teams to fail. I don't see any "move the Senators to Houston!" comments, do you?
November covid shenanigans really derailed any chance of recovering this year. The play started to teeter off right when they started getting guys placed on, and at its height they had 10 players on. Believe they only won 1 game in the entire month.
Dorion needs to acquire at least one top6 forward to play with Stützle, maybe two. Also may need to add some better depth so when injuries happen again, guys like Watson and Kelly aren’t playing above their role.
Guys you wanted to see do well had great years. Tkachuk had career highs, Norris scored 35 goals in a shortened years, Batherson was about a p/pg and Stützle was over a p/pg the last 25 games or so.
Get Stutzle a star to play with
Senators hit a HOmer on Stuzle unlike Boifield who is a year away from being a Total Bust Candidate. I seen game against Devils guy got like PPG then blocked shot leading to him taking it down ice for SHG. Stone along with Karllson were over aged guys well pats their prime who they got value for unlike Kings who kept Drew Doughty or Kopitar spending 21M on two players only to miss Playoffs for like 8 years or so hehe. Though I think Ottawa would be seen different if they win in OT in ECF over Penguins? Maybe a STud in NEt would have made a difference that Matt Murray contract maybe could get moved? Either way they got some good young players can develop guys like Chabot too. They helped Spoil Canucks chances too :).
Haha keep spinning the hamster wheel hot shot…
They need the exact same thing that they needed at the beginning of this year. A top 4 Defenseman to play with Chabot and a top 6 forward to play with Jimmy Stu. That's it. It's time to cash in their prospect chips to get them if need be.
They need to move Zaitsev & Del Zotto to make room for JBD & Thomas if possible. They need to stop taking reclamation projects from other teams (Mete, Gaudette, Gambrell, lesser extent Joseph) and actually pay for something decent and proven.
If they do this, and stay healthy (no insane 15 players out with injury or COVID per game), they'll be competing for a Wild Card spot with the likes of Washington, Toronto and Boston next year.
Tbf tho Brady isn't playing alongside a 100-point scorer and a Selke candidate
Sanderson, Bernard-Docker, Greig, Stutzle, Norris, Tkachuk, Chabot, Batherson and this years first rounder will be the core. It will take time. This core is very young. But I can see this core can be extremely hard to play againts in playoffs in few years. You just need to develope those yougsters with patience and find few more veteran to support the core. At least this team have identity. Tkachuk, Greig and Sanderson in front are really playing playoff style hockey.
For the love of god Zaitsev has to go
The Sens and the Isles got hit bad with the covid shutdowns. That’s my take.
Hockey Guy strong job as always. To highlight the November stretch the coronavirus decided to make the Senators public enemy number 1, again. I'm glad that Hockey Guy mentioned the coaching staff. They were too slow to make adjustments. Heck the move of Stuzle to center was forced by injury. Brannstorm playing his game forced by injury. And remember Batherson was a named All Star before that moron Dell got to him. The big thing is the ownership situation. Melynk left behind about 10 lawsuits. Hockey Guy your black cat is appropriate. Since Spring 2017 that what it had felt like being a Senators fan. Of course everything make the cat was crossed 7 times then dropped kicked each time afterwards.
I think they should get Giroux and put him on the 3rd line and Put pinto on the 4th line. That would really fill out the debth for center position knowing you would have, Norris – Stutzle – Giroux – Pinto.. And further more, Very looking forward on seeing Sanderson play for the first time!. If everyone stays healthy, I would imagine that the Sens will make the playoffs next season. And Murray has turned out to be a bust. Wouldn't feel bad if they got rid of him.
Ottawa Senators has 73 points, that is a big proofment, the last three seasons were lower than that, that says a lot
Can you do a collaboration with Bubbles with the kitties and the hockey?
…and maybe the liquor?
I like how Ottawa is the only team to get the city name in the title lol
Injuries killed any hope …Losing two too 9 centers for the season 6 games in would hurt any team
Not just injuries , during the bad run they had as many as 17 out of the line up largely from covid. Remember Ottawa was the first team to experience this in 21/22. They played most of those games very shorthanded. Yes other teams experienced this later but because Ottawa was first they didn't allow them to postpone games as they subsequently did with the other teams. Net result Ottawa lost a lot of games. I am not saying poor Ottawa but the other teams had rescheduled games as soon as it developed. That's a massive difference that shouldn't be an issue next year. if you only added 12 points you see the massive difference as far as a big step is concerned.
Good video and nice break down 👍👍
ottawa is a farm team for the nhl
I swear the few first games they had where stolen from them by refs from there they fall off then injuries started to pile up. Plus Matt Murray sucks
Gotta keep in mind that the Sens played around games with 5 or 6 NHL regulars because of COVID and only won 1 game. Unfortunately we were the NHL's guinea pigs in this regard
Sens are going to be a fun team to watch going forward. Incredible young core that just needs some more guys added to surround their young guys. Hopefully they can invest some more money into the team to make them more competitive. That’s all this team really needs. Sogarrd is going to be a great young goalie here soon. Sanderson and Kleven Will be interesting to watch as well. Matt Murray is a train wreck and needs to be bought out. They need a legitimate starter and another good defenseman, Sanderson will help but a guy like Dumba Would help solve a lot of their problems
Pierre’s Stubborn behavior and I may never get over how he fired Pierre Maguire I think he made a lot of people lose respect for this organization
They need more scoring, a first or second line centre veteran would help. I think they gotta go for someone like Giroux to help the kids out. Goalies and defense are fine.
I say should’ve waited to make this video, but we didn’t know then, what we know now. Team is looking really good.
I miss Paul MacLean
You forgot about Covid I watched every game and we lost more games due to multiple players being out ,not to mention losing Pinto and White right off the hop Every team dealt with those issues but none worse than Ottawa and The Islanders which is why they fell out of the playoffs too Not saying Sens would have made it but no doubt would have done better
