It was close they allmost won
They're playing like an expansion team.
I went to the game last night and saw tape to tape passes. Unfortunately they were all by the Blackhawks.
Growing pains! The eventual wins will be that much sweeter. There will be wins, right?
Are we going to talk about the TNT announcers spending more time bitching about having to take a flight back to the east coast and bragging who they know personally than actually calling the game ?
Also – the data about contested shots is there – one could come up with a stat based on the player location … is that raw data available anywhere ?
I think your tracking is right on. I don’t need anything but competitive and fun to watch. Looks like the highlight for this first season will be of they can knock one of the contenders off their pedestals – I’m ok with that.
Is it possible for Hakstol to let some lines gain chemistry together? Seems like he switches up lines every game
We need a W so bad lol you're right on. I'm concerned about Grub's 5 hole most though. Been some head scratchers🤔
It's extremely sad that the best sports team in Seattle right now is the fucking Mariners. Looks like it's gonna be a LOOOOOOONG winter in the Pacific Northwest………..
Seattle is an expansion team with an expansion roster. Their record reflects that.
Hate to say it but we might be lucky to get 30 wins this year!
5 straight losses, tons of early roster issues, and of course, for no apparent freaking reason, impossible to follow Root Sports. Seattle is off to a GREAT start.
It’d be super cool if you had videos for your analysis! Is that possible or would YouTube/NHL make that too tough? Either way, great stuff and thanks for making these!
I love how into it you get with the debunking of stats. But at the end of the day, stats aren't designed to care about types of players, contracts, or to a lesser extent, positioning on the ice. One flaw in your logic, I think, is that you don't take into consideration the fact that terrible players can take excellent shots, and great players can take terrible shots. Yes, either way there's no excuse for the Kraken, who were projected to be a defensively minded team, but I also think the way you debunk these stats is a little iffy. Mainly because you vouch for how contested a shot is, but how exactly would you quantify that? I understand what you're trying to get at, but I'm just not sure how one would calculate a number from a largely intangible concept. And as far as the Blackhawks payroll part, that would be like saying xwoba should take into consideration the $30 million AAV the Phillies are paying for Bryce Harper to get on base at a .430 clip (and win NL MVP). There are certain lines that statistics should cross/not cross to determine player worth in any sport but contract should not be used, in fact it is and should stay reversed. Contracts are largely dependent on stats. But that's just my take, you've been watching hockey far longer than I have. Besides, no hockey, football, or basketball team with a salary cap can afford to pay a player $30M guaranteed for 10 years lmao.
Flyers fan whos kept up with all your videos here. I’m gonna say it… you’ve been hak’d
Ya make great videos, great content presented well.
As dismal as it sounds, I am sorry to have missed this game. Thanks for the update. As who to blame? There is enough to share. For my part, I believe coach Hakstol may be a bit out of step for the team (along with all the other deficiencies). If you need a palate cleanser watch Edmonton play Winnipeg. Geez, I love hockey! Go Kraken!
I do think we need to give the other goal tenders some ice time, you watch Fleury in goal and think man if those shots were on Gru we would of scored. Then watching the oilers Vs jets games was like watching 2 brick walls in goal. It makes me jealous 🤣. My point is though if we take Gru out of the equation it might highlight other problems and take some heat off him.
But I still love you kraken…..I've got a good feeling about the next one 😬
I think the success of Vegas set the expectations too high for Seattle. Historically this level is the norm for new expansion teams. Look at San Jose, Anaheim, Carolina, Columbus, Florida and Tampa. Not much success there in the first 5 years at least.
I think the only two people who believe PG is not as bad we think he is are you and PG. Listen to his presser after the game or his recent Athletic interview. He takes no responsibility at all, continually pushing it back on the team. That by itself is enough to want to blame him more.
If you watch each of the recent goals he has given up, you can see a pattern. For example, the second and third Chicago goals went over his shoulder. The reason it did was he shrunk down right before the shot, making himself a smaller target. Better shooters will know this tendency and fire where his shoulder currently is but will soon not be.
These are things that should be correctable but PG seems like a pretty stubborn guy and may not be listening if the goalie coach is telling him that.
My current belief is the reason Sakic would not sign him to the deal that Francis did is that he was not convinced he was worth that kind of money. If this poor play continues, it is another strike against Francis' stewardship.
Because the flaws in PG's game are so obvious, he needs to sit for awhile and also watch video to correct his technique. Driedger needs to start the next several games to see if he is a viable 1B. If not, the Kraken are in real trouble, with $9.4m locked up for years in two goalies with great pre-contract PR but poor post-contract follow through.
I can't tell you how much I hate watching Lauzon try and play defense……Have you seen him once TRY and block a shot? He actually gets afraid and tries to AVOID getting hit with the puck. Oleksiak is strong on the boards, but he's wayyyy too slow to transition and get back on rushes and it's killing us. Larsson hasn't been much better than either of those two and pretty unimpressive. As far as Grubauer is concerned, he played behind one of the best defenses in Colorado last year, and wasn't put to the test as he is now, so his stats were pretty inflated coming over from the Avs. After what I've seen, he's too slow to react in many cases and gets beat by too many straightforward scoring chances that he should definitely stop. But overall, Lauzon is completely lost, Olekisak is too slow and Grubauer just isn't a top tier goalie by any stretch of the imagination.
You're spot on. The Kraken are still very lucky to have Grubi. He had the same issues his first season in CO, and by the end of his time there was a Vezina finalist. Anyone who has been watching Grubi's career could have predicted a rough start in Seattle. I know fans are frustrated, but frankly, Grubi is not the one to be pointing the finger at.
Going to my first game tonight against the Avs! At this point, I’d be fine with a closely-contested loss, as long as I don’t have to witness another 60 mins of odd-man rushes that feel like the puck’s already in the net as they’re crossing the blue line. They’ll turn it around, hopefully tonight 🤞🏼
What if the Kraken didn't make the 2022 Stanley Cup?
About what I expected from expansion Seattle Kraken. I’m so glad i can watch an NHL game in my town of Seattle. I watched so many Totems games in the 60’s and early 70’s. Old WHL Totems had success. Kraken will get there eventually. I’ve been there for all the other Seattle Pro/ College teams. Let’s Go Kraken!
Does anybody blame the coach? Kraken go on the cheap and that's exactly what they got
Currently, we're on an unprecedented nine game losing streak! The Kraken have completely fallen apart. What's interesting is that a lot of people place this on Grubauer, and to an extent, they should. He's so bad this year he's a statistical "worst" outlier for starting goalies, not just for this year, but over the last couple decades. But then, so is Chris Driedger, who was fantastic on the Panthers last year. How come they are both so much worse last year? Must be a weak defense, right? Only, the stats for the Kraken defense shows that the defense is actually pretty darn good–top 6 or so after the first 20+ games.
I don't think the team's woes can be adequately explained with stats alone. The offense is having trouble scoring goals, the goalies are much, much worse than expected. There's a pervasive sense that this team is not gelling together very well at all. A lot of that could be bad coaching. After all, Hakstol was fired from the Flyers for a reason. I think it has something to do with team morale, and a lack of clear leadership. Ironically, when the Kraken did have an impressive win streak, it was when Eberle was out a few games right after his hat trick. When he returned, we started losing again. I'm not saying its Eberle, but there was something offensively that happened in his absence that caused the team to work together successfully. What I am saying is that this is a team that hasn't learned how to synergize offensively, or synergize between defense and goalies. And now, they are used to losing, and have fallen into a painful but oddly comfortable rut. Their performance is poorer than the average expansion team's first season before the rule change with the Golden Knights. That's really saying something!
