Hard to be spoiled without a cup…
How can we be spoiled if we don’t even have a cup?
Sharks fans have high expectations due to some success and the 2016 Stanley Cup final team in particular. But no Sharks team line-up since then has been even close in its balance of role players, hot rookies and Hall of Fame scoring prowess. So Sharks fans should not judge the new team being built by Mike Grier too hastily, as it takes time to build a balanced team with organically developed players under the salary cap limits. Seattle Kraken appear to have the best design for balanced salaries with none too high (such as over 9 million?) and about half the roster in the $4 to $5.9 million per year range.
I think adding another prospects team to feed the San Jose Barracuda (an ECHL team or other pro league team in North America), and get their European prospects on to North American size arenas faster would help. Also more centralized development for juniors and non-drafted prospects who want to compete for a spot on the NHL team by moving up the ladder from a development team to the AHL and then to the NHL when fully developed. Much more attention to detail in prospect development is needed, and longer gestation periods for stars.
Very few 19 year old players are ready for the NHL grind, and even Jonathan Dahlen may have been promoted too soon for his own good. He could later mature into a much better player, after he has recovered his confidence from Sharks dropping him. You can also develop grit and tenacity in players and that could be what was not developed enough in Dahlen to make him stick on the roster. William Eklund still needs much more such development and AHL experience.
Sharks fans were spoiled having Brent Burns on defence and I look forward to the games that Burns in a Carolina Hurricanes jersey blasts more big goals in to the Sharks net as he enjoys the twilight years of his contract. Burns will do much better under Rod Brin D'Amour coaching and probably score 25 goals and 60 points next year. The best games next year will involve the Detroit Red Wings with Bob Boughner assisting on their bench, and also Sharks versus Carolina to see Burns again. The Sharks should give Burns and family a stuffed shark like Dan Boyle has on the wall of his house as a tribute to his long years of service as a Shark when Burns returns to San Jose next year and beats them without mercy. Hockey must always be entertaining, and even if your favourite team does not win enough, it is still fun to watch Mike Grier and David Quinn work together to re-capture the glory days of Sharks again.
Burns and Boughner will make sharks fin soup out of the San Jose Sharks next year, and that will be poetic justice in 2023.
Brodie, what a moronic question. I forgot we won the damn cup. Honestly take down this video. This only makes me lose respect for u for asking such a stupid question
Spoiled of what? Tons of us are A's and Raiders fans. And Sacramento Kings. Literally anything but spoiled…
You can say were spoiled. I say we just keep getting disappointed. If a team wants to fill seats they need to win. That's their job. So they were just doing their jobs. However, when your management signs 11mil contracts for 1 broken D-man then they are shooting the team in the foot and nobody wants to pay to see that. We lost pavs over that deal and could have acquired 2 or 3 other top 6 forwards for that same cost. Seems to me that the fans spoiled the sharks not the other way around. We still filled the seats for a losing team…. so tell me sir, who's spoiling who?
not going to say spoiled i would say as a fan you do expect the team you root to make the playoffs every single that as a fan you are alive, i am not going to into a season and say i hope we lose every single game no way! but as a fan since the sharks inaugural season i do realize that it's hard to make it into the playoffs every season, i go with the flow never get my hopes up to high or never go to low just stay the course and hope for the best, it happens to every franchise to not make it in 3 seasons in a row, yes we had Thornton and Marleau but time to move on and embrace the younger players like Eklund, Bordeleau, and the veterans like Couture, Hertl, and Meier and as a fan i just hope that we are completive and play exciting hockey and maybe we can actually win the cup while i am alive it sure would be nice, but i am forever a sharks fan!
The short answer…yes. It results from making the playoffs 20/22 seasons, and having a local sports media (outside of FSN/CSN/NBC Sports) that doesn't cover the team, meaning there is hardly any criticism or pressure. You can't blame the fans for that though.
Like to me…thats just Sharks hockey. I'm not going to lower my expectations for what Sharks hockey means. It's the north star of this team and it's part of that identity that made the sharks fearsome. I'm looking forward to what the new GM puts on the ice. Grier played Sharks hockey
These last three seasons were absolutely humbling. You win championships through the draft. Doug Wilson always giving up a lot to cling towards relevancy doesn't work in the salary cap era. The fans rejecting Doug Wilson regime means the Shark fans evolved during these losing seasons because sharks fans are united in rebuilding now to get better organically.
how can we be spoiled with ZERO cups?
Making the playoffs 21/30 and not winning the cup once, yeah I'd say I got spoilded a bit.
But I'm very concerned about the fan community. Though I haven't attended the tank since 2016, I think the excitement and passion in the tank has dropped since the 2018-19 season watching through the broadcast. A lot of fans (especially casual fans) must have been spoiled by the recent years after a long span of success.
No!! Have we won a cup?? You play to win.
We were sorta like the 90’s Braves. But without winning the Championship.
We took Joe Pavelski for granted.
No, we haven't won anything of significance lol. We still get made fun of as a franchise. Job aint done yet.
The Blues went to the playoffs 25 consecutive seasons without even a Finals appearance. Were those fans spoiled?
When you have that much success and don't win it all, you get ridiculed, labeled as "chokers". If anything, not winning it all, gives a sense that they squandered the window.
Depends on your expectations. I have yet to experience a season that didn't end in disappointment. We are spoiled in the same way that a kid gets a couple bucks for mowing the neighbors lawn, excitedly rides his bike to Baskin-Robbins to buy an ice cream, then gets outside only to drop the ice cream on the ground as we are about to take the first lick.
Basically we were spoiled by the 21 bike rides?
We want the ice cream.
Never got the end prize, so no, I dont think we've been spoiled, just enjoyed moderate success.
Completely agree with you Brodie! I have to pull a NHL history fact, to prove my point. The LA Kings had Mr. 99, and not once, did they win the Cup during his time there. I believe the Sharks, San Jose, and Lord Stanley will happen. We just need to taste the bitterness to remind us and reshape the Sharks to victory.
As a diehard Oakland A's fan and LA Kings, the Sharks simply suck.
Sounds like a mouth piece for management
When are sharks leaving the bay why not every body leave east bay
No Cup = Not Spoiled
Too bad we lost Evander Kane for nothing. Why not trade him for draft picks? Edmonton has hit the jackpot!
