  1. This is a decision based on Barry Trotz not adjusting. The way he handled the LineUp some Nights was a Head Scratcher.
The Islanders were out of the PlayOffs and played Wahlstrom SIX MINUTES. He didn’t play a lot of the Young Guys. Maybe Barry didn’t want to adjust his philosophy?? Nobody will ever know

  2. It’s clear that Lou is in TOTAL CHARGE of the NYI. But Lou should look in the damn Mirror. He had a Team that went to back to back ECF Finals. They took the eventual Champs Late Year to a Game 07. I get Barry should have played the Younger Guys more but in the end Lou did NOTHING to improve Last Summer. He signed Chara and Parise…that’s it!! If anything, they are both responsible. But Lou is just using Barry as the scapegoat. Based on what Lou has done assembling the NYI, I think your Team is screwed now

  3. At the end of the Day, if you want to move forward as a Team, you need to give the Younger Guys a shot. He played the Vets and it backfired and now he’s gone.

  4. I’m a lightning fan and my dad is an Isles. We just had this same conversation this morning. Either one of us last year would’ve beat the habs for the Stanley Cup Final. TBL vs NYI was the Stanley cup final and vs Montreal was the cool down game. Let’s not talk about the age on the team. Let’s not talk about how you were on the longest road trip I’ve ever seen. It’s a GM/Owner issue not Barry T. As a bolts fan, we’ll take him as an assistant anyday.

  5. What I found odd is that Lou said this decision was NOT primarily based on this Season. So I’m thinking Lou and Barry weren’t on the same page. It’s a bad thing now knowing that Lou is TOTALLY in charge. Not good for Islander Fans

  6. Caps fan and completely agree with your frustration. Trotz is a magician and brilliant coach. The Isles are foolish to fire him.

  7. The owner realized he has a New York problem.
The Islanders are at the bottom of the NY sports landscape and can't gain headlines or popularity with a grind it out defensive system. Isles were selling tickets for $7 bucks at the end of the year.
The owner wants a high flying offensive attack to make his product exciting.
Excitement will sell tickets and possibly make money.
The sad part is, now they are going to hire a lesser coach and have to flip the roster to fit the new system.
We are looking at a rebuild all because our roster is built to win with Trotz's system and we don't have horses Toronto, Tampa and even Edmonton have.
I see the win totals of the Milbury years returning.

  8. life-long isles fan here. We just couldnt WAIT to return to our status as lolcow of the league. what a joke, now you have to get rid of lou too.

  9. 1) There may be more to the story. …… as fans, we don't know what happens behind closed doors.
    2) Lets see how it works out.
    3) The Islanders should be a playoff team this year, and for the next few years. The pressure is on next year…….and that may be a good thing. We will see.
    4) I loved Trotz. I don't want Torts….ugh…..too much drama.

  10. I love your content Jake. I was waiting on hold to tell you that your take on Trotz was absolutely wrong. Both he and Lou shouldve been canned. Trotz lost the locker room and alienated the younger player. Barzal is the face of the franchise and was being handcuffed by Trotz system. I know the Isles media love Lou and Barry, but they are the wrong duo to lead this franchise going fwd.

  11. Sometimes the flame just burns out with coaches. As great as Trotz is maybe to make the next jump Lou felt this was necessary. Only time will tell but as the Jets always say "trust the process".

  12. Trotz was over last year, and Lou too. Losing Toews and Lehner while not getting much in return. So-so draft picks and mismanaging cap to the point Boychuks retirement saved him from losing even more key players. Failure to make the team better by trading Varly while there were 3 or 4 playoff teams that needed a goalie.

Trotz benches a good performing Wahlstrom while playing Leo on the top line, an injured Pags and a useless Zajac. Trotz blew the Isles chance to win that cup, then blamed it on defensive failures rather than poor offense and an anemic power play. I bet a few young players expressed a desire to be traded during their exit interviews. Trotz had NO trust in the offense, and even less trust in young forwards. He turned the team into a 5 defensemen set with forwards forgetting how to score.

Fluck the 13 game road trip. How many those games were in Bridgeport, Jersey, NYC, Washington or Philly? Basically day trip home games.

  13. It’s because he doesn’t work well with the young players he rather play old washed up bums then help develop the young talent and he wanted to keep leddy and trade toews

  14. Listening/reading about this for a day, I'm hoping the reason for the firing was the need to bring in offensive talent during the offseason. I think Trotz did an amazing job of getting the most out of the Islanders over the past three years, but his conservative play was likely not palatable for new, young forward UFAs and retaining the likes of Barzal.

  15. I've been an Islanders fan since their inception, I've seen it all! This was all-around the best they've had since 93 and yes I fear it's downhill from here, I am very frustrated!!

  16. Barry trotz got this team accumulating over 80 points and he got them over 30 some wins during a horrid situation the islanders had to overcome how can you look at that and say the man Failed he didn't¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

  17. As I've said elsewhere: All of the trades, signings, and cap transactions are on Lou for the last 4 years.. This is a very Putin-esque move blaming others for the misfortunes he created. He is protecting his job with a long term vision of his son coming into the position. Kind of like north korean government.

  18. I believe that Barry wants the Winnipeg job so he could be close to his family and Lou Lamoriello took the heat and allow him to go home

  19. Man, I got so fucking tired of this dude giving ice time to lazy ass veterans. The kids wanna play, they’re gonna make mistakes. That’s how you learn. Bailey on the same line as Barzal!?? How the fuck does that make sense? Bailey doesn’t fucking shoot. Chara constantly being in the lineup knowing damn well the dude can barley move. Treating the young dudes like shit and benching them while the vets just stink up the joint on a nightly basis. You think Barzal was gonna stay with him coaching? Fuck no, can’t let talent like that leave this team. Lou waited till he was done with the exit interviews. The players had a lot of say in this decision. It was time to move on. Last year was the year to win it. Isles would’ve smoked the Canadians.

  20. I think as many folks have commented the decision was based on what the GM envisions going forward and development of the younger players over a rather rebuilding period. Trotz appears fantastic with a veteran team but not necessarily developing younger talent.

To call it “disgraceful” is a ridiculous emotional response, unless you are a psychic mind-reader or personally know the details of the GM’s reasoning.

  21. Agreed, barry trotz is a fantastic hockey coach, he will land another job in a second no doubt.

  22. Are You Kidding? Islanders Fans? Even Rangers Fans Are Upset About The Barry Trottz Firing. What Does That Tell You, Lou?

  23. Jake, gotta trust in Lou. Yes, he fired him AND he hired Barry. He can make another great hire too.

  24. Thanks for expressing what any intelligent fan understands. Lou made a poor decisions with the Roster, and had made a number of them since he began with the Islanders. In any case Trotz did an outstanding job with a mediocre roster. Doesn't make ANY sense

  25. Islanders are about to go back to the Satan, Diepietro era of 2005-2008 etc. Not even due to Trotz staying or not. The team is going to change up a lot.

  26. when Lou was GM in New Jersey, He was known to fired to fire coaches out of nowhere. He need to be fired. Lou has been around too long. He didn"t do nothing inToronto and he won"t do nothing for the Islanders

  27. As a Rangers fan, I liked Trotz, bad idea to fire him. A good Islander team is great for NY hockey and the rivalry.

  28. The ownership should have stopped this and should have known better. Shows that they are clueless and that is dangerous.

  29. I agree with Lou. Need a new voice. He does not develop the young guys. Kept playing old washed up D men and forwards. Big reason we didnt make playoffs in addition to covid

  30. He played Leo Komorov on the first line in the playoffs. That's a fireable offense just for that.

  31. I have been an Islanders fan science the dynasty in the 80s. I can't believe they actually fired him. Dumbest thing ever.
I hope it's not another 30yrs before they are good again

  32. Lou fired him because they wanted to keep his assistant ?? Really ?? Lou has always been erratic !

  33. Mark my words islanders will regret this for the next decade. Isles will be competing with the jets and knicks for worst NY franchise

  34. Barry refused to play the young players like walstrrom and bellows. Our star player hates him and will most likely sign with another team if Barry is our coach. Barry had a ton of power to affect roster decisions, and he fought to trade away toews while keeping guys like chara and the old farts. He was ruining the team, he HAD to go
