Let me know your expectations for the Canes this off season
I'm a leafs fan but I'm a hockey fan in general. Another great video. I look forward to watching your content to get all the updates.
The Canes had a very good season–top PK in the league and decent PP, also top defensive team in the league as well plus a top 10 offense–just bad luck in the playoffs, not really a lot they need to do. Will be interesting to see what moves they decide to make–Necas is receiving lots of interest around the league but I don't see him going anywhere.
Glad this channel is taking off, it's more fun than the other two.
Patrik Laine will be a Ranger for Kakko
Some defense and a pick for tj miller
They are going to force KK into the second line center spot to replace trochek ,he hasn't earned the spot but they have no choice now with what they are paying him. A little pay back on Montreal with the offersheet blew up in there face so bad
Mark Schiefle top the canes? Wonder what the package would look like? Imagine it would start with Necas
Can see them pushing for Debrincat too. Just that added offensive option. I think Hoffman would make sense as a pure offensive weapon too
Hearing you mention laine. I always thought that would be the best spot for him
Carolina needs less of the grinder/physical guys , less playmakers and honestly more finishers aka scoring types.
UFA's:
Trocheck C – gone
N. Niederreiter W – Gone
Domi LW – Gone
Cole D – Gone
D. Stephan C/W – gone
B. Smith D – Gone
RFA's
E. Bear D (being aloud to seek a trade) could / should receive a Qualifying offer but its clear he is not in there long term plans.
DeAngelo D – Resigned my guess is for two years
M. Necas RW – trade his rights away –
S. Lorentz C / W – Qualifying Offer
Recap –
With the Carolina Hurricanes handing out Kotkaniemi contract in 2022 it is highly unlikely that Carolina will bring back Trocheck as the number 2 Centerman on the team Kotkaniemi good, bad or indifferent will be the number 2 centerman of this team next season. El NiNo (Niederreiter) as they call him will also likely cash in on several solid years in Raleigh and will be gone as well I believe. Not a big fan of Domi to inconsistent and offers not a lot of goal scoring ability does have a nasty streak but that only gets you so far . Also find will find it hard to believe that Carolina will pay or increase MONEY (3 million )offered to Ian Cole last year so I am saying he is gone we have younger defenseman in J. Chatfield & Joey Keane along with still trying to sort out the Jake Gardiner mistake as well
Carolina needs to acquire a top tier scoring forward preferably at the wing position !!! Carolina has needed this for years !!! Plain and simple it is a must now during this team's win now window. Laine would be a great acquistion for Carolina but he would be a awesome player for any team to acquire. It is a fact that the Hurricanes could not score when the games got tougher in the post season they just lacked that one more top tier piece to finish teams off and it really showed in the second round . Laine will not be easy to acquire from the BlueJackets however and is RFA this upcoming year still D. Waddell has proved before he will cough up draft picks and money to sign RFA's from other teams a'la Jesperi.
Trade route outside of Columbus is also an option for Carolina to find that top tier scoring forward / winger they need and lets not forget after 2023 season concludes S. Aho, T. teravainen, B. Pesce are all UFA's so big decisions in the next two years are coming for D. Waddell and honestly I could see this team falling back some next season if they do not find away to acquire a top tier scoring threat this offseason.
Jordan Staal is likely done playing after next season he is a UFA and really has not much in the tank anymore and Jake Gardiner was a terrible decision made by Don Waddell and most likely they will move him for some type of depth at the minor league level or just buyout his contract and move on. Or do they gamble and put Gardiner on there defense ( god I hope not Mr. Miscue does not need to return to Raleigh).
In Carolina however at least they have S. Jarvis and he burst onto the scene and never really stopped the entire year for them which was a huge boost. As for Necas I would move on the guy reminds me of a poorman's Elias Lindholm who was also mismanaged by the Carolina Hurricanes franchise early on was traded in the Hamilton deal and found a home up north w/ the Flames.
Necas I believe needs that same change of scenery b/c it is just not clicking for him in Raleigh and it never really has.
Need to include prospects ..AHL Chips wire to wire Drury, Poturalski, Lievo, et.al.
I believe the Hurricanes will take a huge step backwards next season. Waddell & Dundon have made a ton of questionable personnel decisions over the past couple seasons (KK $6.1m OS, KK 8 year $38m+ extension, unloading 1st round draft choices Fleury, Bean, Nedeljkovic, & likely soon Necas) plus the cumulative effect of years of fire-sales and player give-aways (Skinner, Faulk, Hanifin, Hamilton, Fox, Lindholm, Edmundson, de Haan, Hakanpaa, & Smith, Cole, Bear, & Stepan will also be gone soon) with little return other than a bag of pucks. By my count the Canes have unloaded 15 D-Men over the last four seasons that now play for other NHL teams and most are on the 1st or 2nd pairing. It's a directionless revolving door on their blueline other than Slavin, Pesce, and Skjei (who consistently under-performs).
Team also has insufficient cap space this off-season to resign Tro, Nino, TDA, and Necas. Giving Kotkaniemi a bigger role as the 2C will ensure disastrous consequences & may even result in the team failing to make the playoffs in 2022-23. KK is a 4 year NHL bust & you don't award that type of contract to a guy that produces 29 points a season, can't skate, is weak on the puck, and doesn't forecheck. Also, the Jake Gardiner 4 year $16m signing under scores the complete incompetence by Don Waddell as everyone in the NHL knew the guy was shot but hey he's another likeable choir boy type who won't rock the boat in their locker room. Beyond that, they're a small market team and have had tremendous difficulty attracting & signing free agents to join the team. Also, the last couple trade deadlines were a disaster as well as DW indicated "we like our group" and did nothing when their roster clearly had significant holes.
Just about every offseason move Waddell made last off-season blew up in his face in the playoffs including giving away 25-year old Calder trophy finalist Nedeljkovic and bringing in two geriatric, injury-prone goaltenders neither of whom have any track record of prior playoff success (i.e. Andersen & Raanta). Too many under-sized & soft Finish choir boy types among their forwards (Aho, Necas, Jarvis, Teravainen, Tro, Fast & Kotkaniemi).
For the last four consecutive years the Canes PK & PP has completely tanked in the early rounds of the playoffs & they were physically dominated on top of already being the most penalized team in hockey. They got blown-out in games 6 & 7 vs. the NYR and mailed it in to the tune of losing 11-2 (I don't count the meaningless goals TDA & Domi scored in period 3 of game 7 when the Canes were already down 5-0). Team needs a sniper and an elite game changer & a lot of sandpaper up & down the line-up that's been missing the last four years in the playoffs. Team misses both Foegele & McGinn as at least they were excellent on the forecheck & played with an edge.
Then Waddell also re-signed Martinook for 3 years at $1.8m a year. Martinook has managed to score only 12 goals in his last 3 seasons and is constantly injured (more incompetence and blatant favoritism for locker room choir boy types and Rod's golf buddies). Time to fire Don Waddell and bring in a competent General Manager & stop kowtowing to maverick, egotistical owner Tom Dundon who doesn't know jack about hockey. Also, Rod Brind A'Mour has zero patience and skill at developing younger players. Jack Drury, Jalen Catfield, & Pyotr Kochetkov should have all been on the 2H 2021-22 roster. Ethan Bear was also given very little opportunity to produce and was benched in the playoffs in favor of vets Smith & Cole who are both slow and on their last NHL legs. RBA turns every forward on the roster (not named Aho or Svech) into a two-way depth player in his image and it hasn't worked for the team in any of the last four years in the playoffs.
Classic example of a team that's well constructed for the regular season & horrendously suited to the playoff grind & as such they fold whenever other teams successfully ratchet up the intensity & physicality against them in the playoffs. They got physically dominated by the Bruins in the 2019 & 2020 playoffs, same story vs. TBL in 2021, and once again this year vs. the NYR in 2022.
Thank you for your youtube channel which I really enjoy! Keep up the great work!
