  1. it's about hindsight, and with that in mind, we are thinking about the present… Ottenger was an absolute beast… if the Conn smythe was a sample size award he would have walked away with it after that playoff performance against Calgary.

  2. Keep in mind Nico was ALWAYS playing against the opponents top line and lost Hughes for a significant portion of the year yet still put up 60 points. I don’t see many others ranked above him getting those responsibilities. I’m definitely biased but no chance he falls out of the top 4, makar of course is better but I would not take miro or pettey over him even with hindsight, no disrespect to either but I rate him that highly, don’t even get me started on 4-8. I know we are talking about this draft with hindsight but keep in mind, the question that year was nico or Nolan, no one else was in the conversation, so in terms of the devils pick without hindsight, they definitely picked the right guy. The disrespect on him is atrocious!

  3. Thank you, he definitely is underrated at this point. Most of the people who where above him really only produced 1 year. And besides, his top linemate was Zacha… He definitely needs some help in NJ. But if I where to redraft, I think he still is a top 5 pick.

  4. I think Suzuki could have a breakout year next year because he’s going to have a full season of Caufield at full strength (if all goes to plan.) It felt like Suzuki was almost a point per game under MSL and was still able to produce a bit under ducharme, he could have a 70-75 point season. Do I think he’s better than Niko his shirt right now? No but I think he has a better ceiling

  5. I just think Suzuki has a similar ceiling defensively but a higher ceiling offensively. I think unlike Hischier who was chosen 1st, Suzuki who wasn't may improve each year to the point where in his prime you take him over Nico. Will I be wrong? Sure, anything can happen.

Then when I factor in the fact he and Caufield have a natural chemistry, I think they'll be attached at the hip for the better part of the decade if not more. Something just fits with them. We haven't had a C in a really long time who's as good as Suzuki imo. I already thought Caufield would be a 50g+ guy in this league due to his shot and style of play, but now that I know he's tied to the hip of Suzuki it gives me even more confidence in then because now we've seen what they can do under a good coach.

  6. I think when it comes to Suzuki vs Hischier its simple, Hischier didnt hit the 60 point mark till this past year, his 5th year in the NHL (was on pace for 70). By year 2 Suzuki was already on pace for 60 in a full season and has now hit that mark in year 3 so the trajectory indicates that Suzuki is doing better at a faster pace while being just as defensively responsible

  7. People can Sleep on Nico alllllll they want. This year when my captain puts up 80 points, they’ll be singing a different tune.

  8. As a Devils fan this is my feeling on this: obviously in hindsight Makar is the clear #1 but looking back on it I am still very happy with how this draft played out. Nico is a great player in his own right and brings a solid two way game w leadership. Think with better linemates he takes a huge jump and starts producing at an elite level.

  9. Development plays a big role in these redrafts. Anyone picked by the flyers wouldn’t have made the top 10 IMO.

  10. Nico Hischier is so disrespected, i get it nobody watches the devils, but oml he is the best player on the team. Besides Jack who could be on a different lvl from most players in the league, Nico is the best. He makes little to no mistakes through the whole damn season, diciplined, great leader, one of the best faceoff men in the league, amazing defensively and along the boards, relentless on the puck, was 10 points under ppg while playing with Vesey as his winger half the year (thx ruff, bozo), Nico literally has to carry every line hes on (unless Bratt is on it lol) cause the devils need WINGERS. I totally understand y the top 3 are the top 3 that's 100% true, but i think every devils fan would pick Nico again, he is so valuable to the team. Once the team evolves around Nico, Jack, Bratt and Dougie people may stop sleeping cause he will finally have some better help. His rookie season with Hall was pretty solid and Hall even said he couldn't've done it without Nico.

  11. Hischier really reminds me of RNH. A great two-way center with scoring just a tad below top line production. But people remember them as "not the best player in the draft", and criminally underrate them.

  12. The draft order changes depending on whether a team is picking the Best Player Available (usually the better choice) or positional need.
Makar is a Conn Smythe and Norris caliber winning defenseman… but I'd rather have Heiskanen on the ice for the last minute of play defending a lead. Heiskanen was playing like a man possessed when Dallas went to the SCF too…. had they won, he may have gotten the Conn Smythe as well. Of course, would of/could of.
Pettersson is a #1 centre… still about PPG while struggling. Imagine if he's fully healthy and physically more mature. Defensively overlooked, since there are better defensive players on the team… and according to some people, if you're an elite offensive player, who is European and not named Zetterburg/Datsyuk, that must mean you're a defensive liability.

  13. It's pretty sad that either of those goalies who anyone who knows hockey how fast goalies can go up and down in consistency season to season.

  14. Robert Thomas is way too high.

Oettinger and Swayman are a little too early to decide

  15. To give a little perspective, some have forgotten how bad the Habs were under Ducharme and how their play was awful to watch.

  16. Stacked draft, many upcoming stars and some are already great players. One of the best draft classes lately?

  17. That draft class was a great one. As a Devils fan, I’d put Nico about 5. As you already pointed out, the top three are obvious at this point, but Nico has been pretty underrated so far by just about everyone. That’s mostly due to the fact that we’ve been a hot mess most of his career. 😂

  18. Hischier is the Devils Landeskog, under-rated as hell because he's not flashy but his leadership and 200ft play is irreplaceable. Give Hischier some elite talent around him and his numbers will explode, exactly like Landeskog.

  19. We love Nico in Jersey. I wouldn't change anything. Hischier is the leader we needed in the locker room and a amazing two way player. You can be a great player and be a victim of circumstances. Case in point. Connor Mcdavid

  20. Suzuki is a better all around player and does it all on both ends of the ice, I would expect him to start putting up a PPG pace going forward as well.

  21. Oh, and for the record….Makar was playing in the worst league of any player in this draft which is why he was miss-scouted. Yes he looked dominant in his league, but he was playing against nobodies. Only 1 single scout had him as the #1 draft pick. ONE SCOUT. Hindsight is 20/20. But to know that 2017 was like a Wright/Slafkovsky draft, I'm glad the Devils picked Hischier instead of arguably the biggest bust of the draft, Nolan Patrick. For those who have Elias Petterson higher, God bless you. He can score goals and that's about it. I love Heiskanen, but I think Luke Hughes will be even better. So oh well. Devils didn't need a 9mil player anyways, Hischier is a perfect fit!

  22. Nico absolutely carries more weight on his shoulders than Robertson and far more than any other player in this draft. He's the only captain. Lol come on

  23. Other than goal scoring, what has Pettersson done for Vancouver? Please someone tell me. He's not even scoring at the rate he's supposed to, and his defense is beyond suspect. Sorry but I'm taking the team player and leader over petey all day every day, no bias involved. I also don't see petey as a playoff performer. I absolutely love Nico, die hard Devils fan & I'd argue he's a #2 pick all day. Heiskanen is great, love him too but he's had amazing defensive partners on a very solid defensive team, he was thrust into a perfect situation, as was Makar. Hischier, like most #1 picks was thrust into the hardest role of all these players and was then named captain. So yeah to be fair and put all bias aside, Makar #1, Hischier #2. But it's also pretty scary to think of Hischier on Colorado.

  24. Only been saying Makar would go #1 in a redraft for 3 yrs now. Glad everyone else caught up. Hischier is criminally underrated. That Devils top 6 forward group is going to be good very soon. Wright/Slafkovsky, Hughes, Hischier, Mercer, Sharangovich etc.

  25. Devils got the pick right in the 2017. The pick was between Nico and Nolan, put any other team in the 1st pick and I bet 99% of those teams choose between those two. The points will come as the devils young talent matures around him. It is the things people don't see in the highlights that will stand out in the years to come. Top PK man, His mins are creeping up to 20 mins/game. His faceoff % keeps getting better around 53% now. He dives into board battles for the puck, And the fact he was so beat up with blocking pucks late in the season even after the team was way out of contention shows what type of drive he has. Don't know what he does behind close doors as the captain, but on the ice the effort and example is there for his team to see every game. If he continues his progression he will continue to creep towards a Patrice Bergeron type player. So yea Devils got the pick right even though Makar turned out to be the best player so far.

  26. I feel like everything went wrong in 2017. If we had drafted Makar, we might not have traded Adam Henrique for Vatanen when we realized how good Makar was. We wouldn't have tried the Kuokkanen experiment.

  27. Suzuki and Swayman are not better than Niko but I’d have Hischier at 7
