  1. WOW, where'd you find this clip??:-) I'm not a Devils fan, but I've heard all about this game, how the Devils needed the win for their 1st ever playoff spot…thanks for posting, I LOVE watching vintage NHL clips:-D

  2. Such an amazing game. Wish I had seen it live, but I was only 2 years old at the time. Crazy how the Devils made it to within one win of making it to the Finals that year, too.

It was all the sweeter that the Devils made the playoffs by eliminating the RANGERS. You can't ask for anything better! GO DEVILS

  3. @azbaldy5 John MacLean might have been the only player still remaining from that 1988 run that won the Stanley Cup in New Jersey in 1995.

  4. Gary Thorne is such a great announcer, the Devils have been lucky to have both Gary Thorne AND Mike Emerick as their play by play guys over the years.

BTW, 1 Dislike on this video. I have a feeling Darren Pang stopped by! HAHA PANGER, THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES.

  5. The Blackhawks themselves would go on a similar run the following year where they beat Toronto in overtime on the last game of the regular season to qualify for the playoffs and ended up going halfway to the Stanley Cup before the Flames disposed of them in 5 games.

  6. is that Gary Thorne on the call? Man he sounds super young, like his early 30's

  7. I don't know if this is true or not, but allegedly the Blackhawks fans figured out what this game meant for the Devils and gave them a standing ovation.

  8. Please on this anniversary of this can the Devils get help from the Preds and have the Devils clinch an NHL Playoff spot tonight? Geeezus this is taking longer than it should have.

  9. I remember this. I was in college during that time and he Devils went on to beat my beloved Islanders that year in the playoffs and a magical run that put them on the hockey map so to speak. Watching this 30 years later it appears as significant a celandine win as if the won a Stanley Cup. The Devils organization was in the shadows of the Rangers and Islanders at that time and only 6 years old. Wayne Gretzky had called them a “ Mickey Mouse “ organization a few years earlier so this win was something significant in the annals of Devils history. Who knew at that time the Devils were about to become an NHL juggernaut in the mid 1990’s and early 00’s and win a few cups.

  10. This team was more talented than some people think. Newer Devils fans and new hockey fans if you go back and look at the roster it was just built right and no wonder they almost made the SCFs.

  11. I was a New Jersey Fan in 1988. I was the only person in my town who had a Devils jersey. I remember listening to the OT on my dad's old ghetto blaster that could pick up the St. Louis Blues broadcast. I wore my Devils jersey throughout the entire playoff run. Crazy to think that the Devils made it into the playoffs on Sean Burke's goaltending before the Pens with Mario.

  12. This was the first playoff birth for the New Jersey Devils but NOT the first in franchise history.

Before moving to New Jersey the Devils were known as the Colorado Rockies and qualified for the playoffs during the 1977-78 season.

  13. A handful of those guys made it to the early 90s Devils who competed for the cup and won it all in '95.

  14. Actually they both had 82 points, Devils making it with 38 wins compared to Rangers 36. Remember some criticism occurring afterwards when The Rangers an 82-point team, a bit over .500 team did NOT make the playoffs, when at the same time in the West Toronto losing night after night whole season collecting miserable 52 points, thirty(!) points less than the Rangers DID make the playoffs in the weak Norris division!
