  1. The penguins looked a lot more interested in winning against the Rangers this year than they have against the islanders the last few years. I truly believe that if they had been healthy, they're playing against Carolina right now. Revamp the depth and run it back

  2. The sweep by the Islanders was shocking but to be fair the islanders were underrated in that series,. The Rangers and Islanders seem to give the Pens trouble a lot

  3. I'd hate to see a legend like Malkin go, but his 5 on 5 play is abysmal.
He's a power play specialist at this point.
Trochek would be an improvement at a cheaper cost, if that's possible.
Our second line has been terrible, no matter if they play Rust on it, or Rakell, or Kapanen, Zucker, etc.
Carter can't cut it as a 2nd line center when Malkin is out… and Malkin can't even when he's healthy.

They need to make a change.

Rust took less and I'm impressed with him for that.
Rakell hasn't played great since 16-17, but should play very well here next year. I think resigning him should be possible because he's underplayed the last several years.
Sign Letang, but Letang shouldn't ask for more than 7.5 million per imo.

  4. Rust just signed for six years 5 million seems to me like a good contract he IMO would have been worth more. Malkin and Letang I would like do the same leave money on the table and take contracts around 5-6 million as well.

  5. Hope you guys don't avoid a rebuild like we did, Det wasted years doing it and we paid for it.

  6. I think Letang will be the next priority and they try to bring back Heinin, Rodriguez, Rakell. Malkin I think either takes an extremely team friendly deal 3 years or less or walks. I wouldn't be shocked if Fluery is available if they kick the tires there for a 1.A 1.B situation and as a bargaining chip for Letang otherwise I think they try and resign Domingue as a 3 and look for an upgrade from DeSmith

  7. We had such poor offense in the third period in this series. When it counted and we needed goals to see out a win or come from behind, we consistently failed. I don't really know what to say. Yes injuries were bad and having Domingue in net for most of the series was less than ideal, but we needed to be more clinical in attack and get better in defence. Pettersson and Marino won't cut it, for example. I don't really know what to say about preventing those comebacks. Each of them just felt like a car crash in slow motion.

  8. Game 6 caused me to stop watching hockey, and Game 7 vindicated me. I know it's not a big deal but I couldn't personally handle two consecutive games decided by the refs.

  9. My big question is if letang walks who steps up. I’m betting in matheson or Marino but they could also bring someone in. I’m also praying they POJ is a full time nhler next season

  10. I feel like the golden Era of Pittsburgh hockey is over with the possibility of geno leaving during free agency off season also the goalie situation has to be sorted out and lastly this team is similar to Washington they are rebuilding

  11. You’re up 3-1 and had Leads in games 5,6 and 7?

No excuses, that sounds like crumbling under pressure to me

  12. Malkin 36 in a couple months
    Letang 35
    Crosby 35 soon as well.

Age and injuries are catching up to these guys, it's probably time they think rebuild.

  13. Still don't understand how Buffalo managed to snag a legit NHL top 4 defenseman in Jokiharju for Alex Nylander, who still has not cracked an NHL lineup 6 years from his draft.

  14. Here's the problem, Hextall knows he needs to retool / rebuild but the new ownership group wants nothing of that

  15. 2019: 0 playoff wins
    2020: 1 playoff win
    2021: 2 playoff wins
    2022: 3 playoff wins

So, Pens should just keep on doing good work, gaining playoff experience and growing, and they will win a series in 2023!

  16. the penguins lost to themselves, this series proves that the penguins have an issue with showing up in the playoffs like the leafs

  17. For 8.7-9.5 million Crosby and Malkin need to score more, now Malkin thinks he deserves a huge raise to lose in first rd and play only 33-41 games a year. Go ahead give Rust 8 million per year, Malkin 11-12 mill and Letang 10 million, throw in 5 mill to Taco Flipper Rodriguez

  18. Alex Nylander is a huge bust, I watched him live in Rochester, zero effort. Loser

  19. Due to Rutherford's constant trades, the Pens ended up with little youth in the minors.
I don't like Mark Madden, but he is right. This team is stale. The core can't get it done anymore. I would have let Ruat leave. Malkin would not return under any circumstance. A new backup goalie is needed. Madden points out that Sully coaches one way and won't adjust. Five playoff losses in a row is too many. Time to adjust or move on.

  20. Notice how poorly Pittsburgh played with a lead this season. They blew more games late that Ican remember.
A flu wave hit the Pens in April and affected their performance….this per Michele Cracchiola…it did not help at the end of the year, as did Jarrys broken foot.
Changes are in order and are overdue. At some point a complete teardown and rebuild will have to come, probably when Sid calls it quits.

  21. It's gonna be especially interesting this time around for the Penguins because it's a new ownership group. They aren't as emotionally attached to the current team than Lemieux & Co. were before them, and as a result would be more likely to go into a rebuild.

  22. I think back to when Lemieux and Jagr, their last season together 2001. Then they traded Jagr. Penguins fell on hard times after that, almost left Pittsburgh.

I don't think the Pens will go through another turbulent time like the early 2000's. It's been an incredible run since 2007 – 16 straight playoff appearances, 4 trips to the Stanley Cup finals, winning the cup 3 times. A modern home in Pittsburgh and revitalized civic pride.

That being said, I really think that it's time to focus on the future. Replenish the depleted farm system and if that next superstar talent looms, tank at the right time to get him.

  23. They aren’t far off. Keep this core together just add a top 4 d who can log minutes in both ends.

  24. With an aging core, you have to wonder when a team decides to rebuild. Malikn 35, Letang 35, Crosby 34 are the 3 oldest players on the team but they are all still producing well. As a Canuck fan, I compare their longevity to the Sedins who hung them up at age 37. So the Pens core has a few years left in the tank but the question is, do they have championships?

  25. Keeping Rust (I’m glad we already resigned him) and Letang are the most important things in my opinion. Keeping Malkin would be great, but at this point I don’t think losing him would be detrimental to the team (it would just be sad.)

  26. They have been out goal tendered these last couple of years…..in the playoffs. They are getting older and getting nothing but a thank you card is not an option for their free agents from some other team. Hard decisions have to be made….but that goaltender needs to be fixed if they want to make it out of the first round

  27. The Penguins must realize that they're going nowhere with the Crosby-Malkin-Letang trio. Yeah, they brought the franchise 3 Stanley Cups, but even they won't last forever and all of a sudden will bring another Stanley Cup – the NBA's Boston Celtics know this first hand by being mediocre at best after clinging on on the last ounces of the Bird-McHale-Parish trio that by the early 90's was way past its heyday. It's time to look for the future and gradually move on – it won't be the end of the world if the Penguins miss the playoffs next season.

  28. What they need to doo next season:
    1. Bring back the "Flying Penguin" logo as primary logo or as secondary logo
    2. Make Jaromir Jagr retire his career as a Penguin and imidiatly rise his jersey 68#
    3. Get Marc-Andre Fleary come back
    Yeah that shoulkd do it….

Yeah I know it won't fix anything, but you could always ask for it at least….any one?

  29. I dont agree with you on Letang, he is well past his prime play…makes way too many defensive mistakes leading to odd man breaks and scoring.

  30. Why, why did they start Jarry in game 7?! Whoever made that decision ought to have their job evaluated. I know he is the guy above Domingue but the chemistry and his play was owed the series. Plus Jarry possibly not 100%.. If it was Sullivan, I'd like to think his time is short in the Burgh.

  31. As a Pittsburgh fan, I really felt like this was the team in a last ride. If everyone would be willing to come back and give us one last shot on cheaper deals, no question to me you run it back. Jarry I think can truly be a franchise guy and Sid is always gonna be sid. I think there's unfinished business here I hope they try for one last run

  32. This team is stale and can’t go on a run….until they do lol remember 2015 everyone was counting out the Penguins before back to back cups

  33. Excellent insightful coverage for Pens..will be interested to see their off-season management activities..

  34. My guess is that the Pens will try to keep the main core of players together for next year. Also, I really think that the injuries caught-up with them during the playoffs. It should be an interesting off-season for the Pens.

  35. Pittsburgh and Washington need to accept that they won't win again with their current core. A window does not stay open forever and with four straight early exits it's obvious time's up. They may be good enough to make playoffs but would fans be happy with another first round exit? Re-signing Malkin and Letang would keep everyone happy, but does that take the team anywhere? Sooner or later they will have to embrace a rebuild.

  36. The dominance of the Penguins is over.
    Sid is getting tired.

  37. It’s going to be interesting to see what the pens are going to do with goaltending and I know that either Malkin or Letang won’t be back !! Its going to be the beginning of the big rebuild
