  1. Unfortunately, Brannstrom isn't fast enough to make up for his size or big enough to make up for his less-than-top-end speed. Great skillset. Could be a superstar in Europe.

  2. it's ok, the Sens fleeced the Sharks in the Karlsson trade, getting Josh Norris and a pic that became Tim Stützle

  3. You can't really say they got fleeced considering Stone's back is messed up now, and that contract is gonna be an anchor or constantly on ltir. They bet way too heavily on Branstrom working out, that's the problem (though he still is young enough to turn things around, this year is huge for him)

  4. You really can't say the Sens got fleeced because Mark Stone's back is not in good shape now and Vegas is on the hook for Stone's mammoth contract and sink them or LTIR them. Pierre Dorion did offer Stone another contract but Stone turned it down Dorion was trying to keep a vet to help the draft picks and prospects . At the the time of the trade Pierre Dorion was trying to get the best return he could he was under the gun to not let Stone go for free, Dorion did get a first and couple of other small picks. At the time of the Stone trade Branstom didn't seem that bad potential was there very highly rated defensemen and it seemed liked he would be an excellent top 4 D offensive defensemen not just on the Sens but any team in the NHL so Dorion went for him and the Sens also ended up with Egor Sokolov who very good prospect so it was not a total loss. At that time it was the right thing to do it was about saving money getting draft picks and prospects. Now Branstrom is still young he still has the potential to turn things around it's a very telling year for Branstrom he has to prove his worth. Now when Vegas has got there Captain missing games and not knowing how many games Stone plays this year and Stone holding Vegas down with his contract i would say it's little hard to call this trade fleecing just yet i'm a big fan of Egor Sokolov. I think you still have to wait 1 or 2 years because if the Sens trade Branstrom or Sokolov what is the return? The Branstrom return well no high hopes there but with Sokolov there is a lot of hope for what we would get in return in a trade. I remember vividly when the trade happened how happy David Poille was and all he could say was "you don't get many chances to get player of Mark Stone's caliber". Now my big question is does Vegas still have Stone after next year or is his time up in Vegas due to his injures and his contract? Not Pierre Dorion's best trade but will let this one slide. I think as Mad Max walked out the door this year he said Stone your next!!

  5. The only benefit from this trade is that Ottawa doesn't have that 9.5M contract. It wouldn't fit at all in the current team structure.

  6. Somehow I think Brannstrom will get a short term extension (realm of 2-3 year deal) and a lot will depend on the development of Tyler Kleven, as Im sure the Sens see him as that good #3 LD behind Chabot and Sanderson. If the Sens see Kleven to be NHL ready or close within that timeframe, Brannstrom gets moved in the next year or so depending on how he does this upcoming season. This is his time to produce, or we end up seeing a Chychrun deal made involving Brannstrom in the mix while the Yokes also take on Zaitsev's contract aswell.

  7. Honestly, looking at the trade now, poor Mark Stone man. Poor dude

  8. Rumour has it Stone was offered the same contract by Vegas, but he didn't want to stick around for the rebuild

  9. Of course we did. If hed hit his ceiling wed still lose the trade. We played him less than Zaitsev.
    We havent developed him right.

  10. It's still a good deal, why pay a guy to stay when he didn't want to be there anyways, had to change the culture of the team, and also I think mark stone isn't some franchise defining piece either.

  11. Was sad to see him go but they where not going to pay him. The deal was better then getting nothing for him because he was going to walk as a UFA . So fleeced would of been getting nothing for him in my opinion.

  12. The rebuild plan was a to draft a young core, use the cap space to lock up that core, complement the core with free agents. They have done just that. Imagine if they had granted long term contracts to Kharlesson and Stone 3 or 4 years ago. These contracts would now be impossible to move and they would handcuff the senators ability to sign guys like Stutzle. Its easy to be a Monday morning quarterback, however, its also clear Pierre was very cautious not to handcuff himself with long term contracts to aging (depreciating) stars. He has chosen to give the money to young rising stars. Its a gamble but he only gave long term contracts to players after seeing a reasonable sample of what they can do. Risky but clever.

  13. Let's not forget that Stone made the senators think he was going to re-sign and at the last minute didn't, forcing a trade, shrinking the trade pool.
He then signed for a massive front loaded, bonus packed deal that will not age well.

  14. Did they really though? Mark stone may not play again and the sens still have the prospects from the trade for many years to come.
