Rakell should be a given a solid few weeks of regular season play on the top line to see how he works there and to let it gel. Just based on what little he's been able to do with Sid when given the chance, and the type of player he is, I don't see how it wouldn't work well. Unless Rust really suffers scoring or making things work on Malkin's line (which I also doubt), I don't see the negative to the team in making these moves. Plus, the vision and playmaking abilities of Rakell would probably bump Sid into the 40 goal range again and they be so much harder to defend.
Best case scenario is for the vets to produce while the team struggles to make playoffs. Maybe then can trade the vets for futures. But that’s fantasy since most teams are up against the cap. Disastrous offseason culminated by that ridiculous Sully extension.
As far as the outcome of this game…it shouldn't be taken so lightly. Yes we understand all the things DK is saying…to a point. At the same time there has to be a level of compete, and level of pride in just putting on the team sweater that shouldn't allow such a lopsided, laissez-faire outcome, no matter if the game is preseason, or a charity event with no pads. I mean; if not, why even pick up a stick? Why even be there at all? Just to see how the new stick tape works under simulated game conditions? Players should instead have told Sully they'd rather be gardening, and if it is that meaningless, and old players don't need the extra physical stress on what's to be a long season ahead anyway, he should be fine with it, right?
Sorry DK, but Phil Bourque was an NHL player, so he gets it more than you or I ever will, and he was upset with the way they played in general. So if he has a problem with it, then there's a problem. Maybe you with all your hockey experience can sit down with Phil and tell him he's out of line for being upset. Tell him how you understand better how these things go. Anyway, unless you are playing a pickup game with children in leg braces, you don't go 0-9 on the PP while allowing the other team to go 2 for 2 AND score a shortie. Even in the most "game and outcome was unimportant" scenarios, that's still unacceptable. Sorry, but they get an F for F it.
