  1. Players don't owe fans anything. They are paid to play and John did. Did he overplay his hand? Probably. Does it matter? John has his money, his family and maybe Columbus will become something. It is what it is, we don't have to like it. Canadian teams need a new strategy as competing in Free Agency clearly doesn't work, and it's getting worse. As a Calgarian expat I'd go back in a heartbeat, but clearly 99% of NHL players feel the exact opposite.

  2. I'm not a Flames fan, but if I were, I'd be 'perturbed', too, as Zeis said. But this must be remembered – we're talking about a highly-trained professional athlete, not a member of Mensa. Duhatschek posited that the market for Johnny Hockey may not have been either as big or as lucrative as he believed it would grow to be. Besides, aren't the Blue Jackets closer to contention right now than either Jersey or Philly? Certainly, this is one of the most baffling free-agent signings in NHL history.

  3. He said "closer" to home, and you dumb ass media people assumed "closest to home". Columbus is SIGNIFICANTLY closer to his home than Calgary….

  4. Factor in cost of living, housing prices, crime, taxes, etc he’s going to have a higher standard of living in Columbus or surrounding area than any of those other cities.

  5. As a Flames fan , it didn’t come as a big surprise that Johnny didn’t re-sign here … it was disappointing , but not surprising. How many huge free agents have chosen to sign in Canadian cities over the past 20 years ? Not many. Flames management had hoped that the connection Johnny had with the city would influence him to stay. Unfortunately , the extreme pressure to win , the harsh fans and media , cold winters , and lack of culture and amenities that big US cities offer , caused him to go elsewhere. Being extremely close to his family , and wanting to be closer , just added to the list of reasons … it certainly wasn’t the only reason as he’s claiming. It would be nice if Canadian fans and Canadian media would tone down the negative rhetoric and extreme pressure to win , as it might make playing in Canada less unappealing … but that’ll never happen. We’ve always battled the competition of better weather , lower taxes , and less pressure that cities in the states offer , and we’ll always struggle to get the best talent in the league to play here.

  6. Don’t understand why this is unfathomable. Players like Columbus. The family line is authentic. .he has referenced it often. Maybe because I grew up in Vermont so did Johnny’s father..he played at Boston College..I always thought he would move back East. He signed in Metro Division..family won’t have to travel much to see him vs Rangers Isles Devils Philly. UFA status is so players can make a choice for themselves at halfway point in their career. Johnny didn’t grow up in Vermont but his reticence to speak up and flat out say he won’t be staying in Calgary..speaks volumes ironically to the reserved style I saw a lot of in my New England past.. often downright annoying.. this is a scenario I saw coming. You want to say all the right things but not sure how you can avoid disappointing a lot of people..so you put it off. I think he spent lots of time researching places he might like to play..and Columbus was one he says he circled and asked former Columbus players about. It’s a shame Philly didn’t plan ahead and set aside cap space ..

  7. Flames dodged a bullet. Johnny is great during regular season. He disappears during playoffs. Johnny Gaudreau is never going to win a Stanley Cup.
I watched Theo Fleury and Marty St Louis, both great small guys who could handle playoff toughness. Johnny cannot handle playoff toughness.
Dodging the bullet, Calgary can now spend the dough on finding a couple of Darryl Sutter type guys who can punch them through the playoffs.
Johnny is exciting, but he's not a Cup winner.

  8. It's fine he left but tell us why or at least do a better job lying to us. Something's not adding up.

  9. He didn’t go to Philly because of torts. Atkinson literally talked him into Columbus and he plays for Philly

  10. Out of Philly, NJ, islander and jackets the jackets have the better roster and are on the come up. Philly was trash last year. NJ was just as bad. Islander are on the decline. Jackets are loaded with young talent and can pair him with laine on the top line

  11. why cant people realize he's american and doesnt want to play in a city where it snows 10 months of the year, in a country where taxes are crazy and covid policies are tougher? He's an adult and doesnt have to explain himself to anyone.

  12. Gaudreau is not as good as you think. He will not duplicate this season. Don’t focus on this guy.

  13. Columbus is actually a really nice city, especially for young families. They have beautiful suburbs there, low crime and just a real clean, good city. Idk people trash that city so much. Been there a bunch of times, it’s been great

  14. "Family reasons" could include that Johnny and wife want their children to grow up as Americans, in a US location, and live in a smaller city where family life is safer. Guns happy American childhood versus the Calgary Stampede and Canadian wilderness? I think this is a political decision to want to be Americans and keep their family American rather than migrate to Canada and become Canadians. There may be major differences in tax rates when you compare Alberta to Ohio, or other savings due to investments and other income from sponsors and advertisers in the US. Johnny Gaudreau is an American born player who wanted to be an American based star and win the Stanley Cup as an American. It was all very political and nationalistic pride and family attachment in a political sense.

  15. philly didn't have the cash. NJD? as a player, i wouldn't be interested in being on a team where lamoriella was the shot caller. he earned the right to chose where to play so i think the media should just shut up about it.

  16. As a Columbus guy, it is strangely worrisome when a top player wants to play in Columbus, although it is something that until now, was never before known. The reasons free agents have chosen Columbus are almost always either for family reasons or, to be the big fish in a little pond. Those reasons are not necessarily the reasons the fan wants to hear. But the fact is, the franchise moving from perennial also-ran to at least an occasional Cup contender is a move that has to start somewhere.

  17. Philly obviously thought little Johnny was not worth the trouble🤣👍🏻He made Calgary look foolish 👊🏽That was Johnny’s best move ever👊🤡

  18. Guys, after listening to Johnny’s press conference just listen to his words, he and Meredith are starting a family is September/October…THEY decided Columbus was the best fit for them to raise their first child & start their family…this decision was not a hockey decision…and that’s absolutely fine. Johnny just made it clear what’s important to him and that speaks volumes in today’s day and age.

  19. Johnny hasn't found his big boy pants for life out of Hockey. His agent comes across as being a Douchbag.

  20. Is 13 expected to come out and say that he left Calgary because Trudeau has been turning Canada into a prison with mandated vaccine nonsense and other social policies? Seems to me that would be bad form. Family is a safe answer without invoking politics.

  21. ❤Once you were dead because of your disobedience and your many sins. You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world, obeying the devil—the commander of the powers in the unseen world. He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to obey God. All of us used to live that way, following the passionate desires and inclinations of our sinful nature. By our very nature we were subject to God’s anger, just like everyone else.

But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!) For he raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus. So God can point to us in all future ages as examples of the incredible wealth of his grace and kindness toward us, as shown in all he has done for us who are united with Christ Jesus.❤

  22. Been to Calgary, aside from Banff ( which is nowhere near Calgary) , the most exciting thing about Calgary is leaving Calgary. Why the vitriol on Columbus??

  23. As a canucks fan just having watched my team loose Markstrom and tanev to calgary for nothing, I say to calgary fans complaining they lost gaudreau for nothing can keep complaining

  24. Everybody talking about Columbus is an 8-hour drive to Jersey but like aren't there planes…. Can Johnny not take a flight from Columbus to New Jersey that would probably take close to an hour. I find it hilarious that these grown bald men are constantly degrading a guy for making a choice for his life and his family's life my God stop crying like a bunch of babies

  25. How do you say you hate the Blue Jackets without saying you hate the Blue Jackets. A lot of salt and sour grapes from a bunch of people, so much butt-hurt. I especially like the idea that a guy with that much money is going to be driving home.

  26. Idiots it IS & always will be about Income Tax! Would YOU want to lose 50-55%? As a Flyer Fan he did not want to play for a rival in NJ nor NYI is ALL.

  27. If Johnny Gaudreau was drafted by Columbus and left in free agency for Calgary, fans in Ohio would be miffed and mystified.
