Nothing wrong with the 4 core in this team Tkachuk, Gaudreau, Monahan and Lindholm. This team need to pay the price and trade Lucic and get top line RW. Gaudreau and monahan produced when they played with decent RW. The issue was other lines weren’t good but rater then cutting their lose with Neil/Lucic, This team decided to deplete the top line. They put washed up league minimum players on top line.
Put the blame where it’s due. Lucic can’t do what he is paid to do and this team depending on him for leadership. First you need to get the job done. He can help a rebuilding team. People keeps saying he would only move his NTC to contender. Well this team is not contender with him eating up over 5mil on 4th line. I am no hockey expert, what decent team went far with 8 million on their 4th line. That didn’t have young superstar.
I think top six is better off this year but flames paid it with defence rather then that useless contract. Derek Ryan’s contract expiring helped a bit and he was more useful player then Lucic.
Andrew Ladd’s bad contract was traded to Arizona for 2nd and 3rd. That would of been fair price to pay to have the chance to sign another top six RW.
Jarome Iginla didn’t have a centre and now this team can’t find RW.
Preparing for a frustrating season.
Phillips ruzicka gawdin Pellitier Emilio petterson have to all be slotted before Lewis ritchie even pitlick maybe but sutter once again will not do that I think that was a bad choice
Yeah it’s reported that Johnny g wants to head to the East coast and he would want to play over there. Whether it’s for the Flyers the Devils the Bruins or the islanders. I expect him to sign with one of those teams
Give Looch a shot at the top line
they should definitely give the C to Tkachuk, giving it to Monahan makes no sense, guy has no heart
Theo fleury was actually drafted at 166 too, that’s a great pick for Calgary to have
Mangiapane was 2nd in the league in even strength goals per 60min last year (only behind Pasta). He is easily a top 6 player
I think that this team will finish 3rd in the pacific after Vegas and Edmonton but they won't last long in the playoffs.
You know what is a good idea if your team sucks and needs a partial rebuild?? Do next to nothing, watch your captain walk out the door and then sit back and see what happens. On the plus side the Florida Panthers are thrilled with Sam Bennett, who has proven to be a very good player (15 pts in 10 games).
I’m interested to see what Sutter can do with a full offseason to prepare. Also there will likely be more practice time this season given that the season is not condensed.
I could see them going with backlund but thats just me… he is one of the best two was forwards and he's respected… to many other players are on the fence if they are staying or going and backlund is always just out of the movement picture. I go with backlund… give tkatuck time to see how thats going to go and if he resigns after three years and the only other player I can see in lindholm…. but backlund is a solid career flame
As a Flames fan, it is clear as day that the current version of this team is not a playoff team. Treliving cannot go into the season with the mentality that the solution to this team will come from within. This team has very obvious needs that can only be improved through trade at this point:
1) An elite player to join the top-6, preferably a goal scorer. Our team has zero elite players, the only person who comes close is Gaudreau. Guys like Tkachuk, Lindholm, Mangiapane etc are great, but they aren't elite. We need an offensive threat every night, which is why I've always been on the Eichel train and I continue to be.
2) Probably a top-4 dman. Tanev, Hanifin and Andersson are the only top-4 guys. Valimaki is still unproven. Kylington, Mackey, Zadorov, are bottom pairing guys. Who knows, one them might take a top-4 job and run with it, but for now, there's no defenseman that can round out the top-4.
3. A faster bottom-6 forward group. Lucic, Ritchie, Pitlick, and Lewis provide grit but they cant be relied upon to provide any offense.
In my opinion, the Flames have no choice but to make big moves otherwise this team will either miss the playoffs or get easily handled in the first round.
1) Trade Monahan+roster player+top prospect+first rounder for Eichel+mid level draft pick.
2) sign a guy like Vatanen for 1 yr, 1.5ml as an insurance policy
3) Give guys like Phillips, Ruzicka, Gawdin more ice time in the bottom-6
All C trades being held up by Eichel deal taking so long. Calgary is in the mix but even if he's traded somewhere else no one is trading for 2nd options yet. If Gaudreau isn't signed by start of season & no other moves made this team will be in huge trouble. Also current forward depth: Mangiapane > Coleman > Dube. Guaranteed L on opening night (haven't won opening night game since…2009?) So is there enough talent for remaining 81 games? Should be but if no other moves & slow start the pressure is going to be huge & don't see character for this team to dig out of any hole. Captaincy will be vacant at least to start season (Vegas ran out 3 seasons b4 first captain named)
Flames will miss Giordano in a big way.
As a Habs fan Mangiapani was easily the player I held my breath with the most
Theo Flurey was also drafted 166th overall by Calgary
i really thought they would move monny this year but i can see why they didn't, has no trade value for that contract. Hope the boys can bounce back, that last season was just hard to watch.
I am so excited to watch Mang play this season. I need a jersey of his ASAP
I'm shocked Shannon how much you know about so many teams. Props to you
im not convinced the flames organization even wants Chucky on the team anymore let alone do they want to make him captain
Must findway to trade Lucic and get a top RW
I think AM 650 should have you on for a segment once a week.
OR
Maybe since AM 730 is starting to do sports maybe they can get you doing an evening show you can become the "new Dan Russell".
At least part time.
Of course they gotta make it worth your valuable time eh $$$$$.
I would not want to go to China for the Olympics
spoiler alert. we will be fucking mediocre
Dube is nowhere consistent enough to be in the top 6 and has yet to show enough offence to be up there too. Gaudreau was great later in the season after he settled into D. Sutter's system
What worries me are the negative rumors surrounding Tkachuk and Monahan respectively. Bad chemistry can really unravel any success. I love Lindholm and Tkachuk. Think they’d be crazy to move Tkachuk as some rumors I’ve heard. Their defense is also questionable until they prove otherwise. I think Pelletier can have a really nice impact if he’s ready, but they need some young players to step up. He really could be the piece they were missing. He’s a tenacious little scorer. Gritty too. Zary and Dube too could arrive. But I feel like this team can finish anywhere from a playoff team to a bottom 10 nhl team. Coleman a really nice add. Vlader no clue. He can turn into a legit starting gk or a bust, who knows. But Markstrom should be good. Wouldn’t be shocked if Monahan got traded before the deadline. I think Gaudreau is actually the guy underperforming most for what he’s paid. It’s certainly not Lindholms fault. And Tkachuk had a down year, but I still don’t think he’s a finished product. Valimaki and Andersson really need to step up without Giordano.
Worst Canadian team next season imo…6th in pacific.
This core is going to struggle to make the playoffs and win a series, let alone challenge for a cup. I really hope they blow it up, the flames have always been this middle of the pack team for basically 20 years now 🙁
The Flames strike me as a team that should have blown it up already or at least a serious retool. This core just doesn't seem like it has what they need to truly contend
I think the Calgary experiment is done and that they miss the playoffs again at 6th in the Atlantic.
This team needs a serious regroup. Whenever I saw that team they looked like they were getting nowhere. I'm glad that this team was knocked out of playoff contention in the Canada division because that would've been a disaster regardless of the status of both Calgary and Vancouver. 6th or 7th in Pacific.
"the eggsits(exits)" haha
Gio's leadership ? Since he became Captain the dressing room has has problems with their various coaches, the team has had no bounce back, you could call them lazy a lot of the time… Seems to me the Flames are rather lackluster during his entire run as Captain.
Tre has overvalued pieces that have needed to move over the last few years, to the point they have lost value… by the time they accept this core will not cut it the value will be even less ( Tre gone equals a rebuild finally? )
As a retrospective now that the flames have clinched the top of the pacific division.
The top line has surpassed all expectations. Coleman didnt bring the goals, but he absolutely brings the intangibles, Flames fans definitely arent enthralled with his contract, but he's a good presence. Monahan keeps playing through injuries, maybe 22-23 is the bounceback year. The blue line has been fantastic, all three pairings are a force to be reckoned with. Goaltending has been fantastic, markstrom has bad nights, but he also leads the league in shutouts, so, y'know, give and take. Injury luck has been on the flames side. Dustin Wolf dressed as backup, he'll be good, he needs another season in the AHL though. Flames are now at the third best odds of winning the cup.
