This was a challenge for the roster. Who stood out and how?

Gotta forget this game like the pair of underwear you threw out in a gas station bathroom.

  4. Welp, could’ve gone better, but tbf all of our NHLers on the roster were on a back to back vs almost nobody from the Leafs who played yesterday (I think only Malgin and Gaudette), so we’ve got a few tired NHLers and the Griffins vs Matthews, Marner and co. I’m not too stressed about it.

Donate to the « Sage for Zadina » fundraiser so our boy can fill those nets.

That broadcast and panel explains alot about how their fan base, holy cringe.

  7. Oesterle didn’t exactly play his way into that bottom pair LD spot. Edvinsson, come on down.

Thin lineup – not mad about it. Nice to see 24 & 90 showing some skill and poise. Next up regular season!

Maybe I’m reading too much into a mostly AHL squad getting shown up by one of the top NHL outfits in the league, but I also think that a few key players were slotted into spots as a last chance to show if and where they belong on the big squad. So, insights:

I think Vrana played himself off first line and first PP. Love the guy, think he’ll do great this season and going forward, but he doesn’t drive play when he’s in those spots, he needs a little shelter and some good linemates.

Love JFV’s grit so far this year, he’s showing that he can handle a bottom 6 role. He has the habit of throwing the puck to what he hopes is open ice that sometimes works and sometimes fails badly, but I think that’ll be less noticeable when he’s not on the first line facing the opponent’s top defenders.

Berggren deserves a spot. Not sure he’ll get it because of contract issues, too many forwards, but at some point he’ll be called up when a top 9 wing spot opens, and I suspect he’ll make sure to stay there.

Erne and Suter showed that, while maybe they could be in the press box on a team at full health, they’re still well ahead of the guys bound for GR. If any of JFV, Soderblom, and/or Berggren start in GR, it’s because these two are performing adequately enough to take the hard, 4th line minutes, and it would just be better for the youngsters to get top line minutes in the AHL. Smith, on the other hand, will likely get waived and nobody will take him. Maybe he shuttles up occasionally, but despite some improvements on last year he just isn’t performing even in the top 15.

Zadina has definitely won a spot, he has solid two-way play, and develops quick chemistry with shooters like Vrana and Kubalik. But he has to figure out this curse of his, or he’ll find himself in Suter/Erne category before his contract is out.

While Edvinsson has his flaws and might be well served by playing some top-two minutes in GR, he really is among our top six contracted D. There might be an argument for Johansson, and who knows what we have in Walman/Hagg/Pysyk when they’re ready, but if Ed goes to GR, it won’t be because he was beaten cleanly out by another player, it will be because long term team goals served by the fact that he doesn’t need waivers and his ELC can still slide another year.
