Fifty years ago today, on October 12, 1972 the Winnipeg Jets played the first regular season professional hocky game in the history of the team. The Jets were victorious in their road debut, defeating the New York Raiders by a score of 6-4. The first goal was scored by Jets’ captain Ab McDonald.

The team followed that up that first win with another road victory the following night edging the Minnesota Fighting Saints 4-3. Unfortunately, the Jets dropped their home opener against the Alberta Oilers, losing 5-2 at the Winnipeg Arena on October 15, 1972.

It was the inaugural season of the 12 team World Hockey Association. While Jets’ star Bobby Hull did not suit up until 15 games into the season due to a legal battle resulting in his jump from the NHL to the WHA, the Jets would go on to a successful season and a lengthy playoff run that would see them lose in the Avco Cup finals to the New England Whalers.
