Such a puzzling move for the Oilers. 38yo after a terrible year, at an extremely suspect cap hit (with nothing retained), and they gave up arguably (or very soon to be) the better defenseman AND attached an additional asset to it

avg ice time for duncan keither in 2015 was 31 minutes… Good thing that was 6+ years ago..
In my opinion, I think if Edmonton plays Keith the right way I see the trade working. The reason why Duncan Keith has slightly declined for the past few seasons is because the way Chicago played him. If I'm not mistaken, he played top pairing minutes for his entire time in Chicago, even past his prime. That's not efficient for both Keith or the team, especially at his age. If Edmonton plays him in bottom 4 pairing minutes, he can really work out for the Oilers, despite his age. Also he brings veteran leadership to the team to help McDavid and his presence will help the young D core take steps forward. Yes salary retention might make the trade not too awful but I think Keith still has lots to bring even where he's at right now
