JEFF PETRY HAS FINALLY BEEN DEALT! What Are YOUR Thoughts On This Trade? And Which Team Do YOU Think WINS This Deal? The Montreal Canadiens OR Pittsburgh Penguins? I'd LOVE to Hear YOUR Thoughts! #GravGang #RoadTo60kSUBS NOTE: Rem Pitlick has signed a 2-Year 1.1M deal likely because of this trade, it makes me feel a bit better about it 😅
As a Habs fan I agree with your assessment, hate seeing Poehling go especially.
Other comments about this trade has helped me to better understand it. Habs get bit more cap space, they got a younger defender and Peatry had requested the trade himself so it makes more sense why they traded him. And Matheson isn't a terrible player
Pens traded a RHD for a LHD and then a LHD for a RHD. Makes sense. I think.
Matheson had a good season last year and was good in the Pens short playoff run too. I’ll give him that. And dude can definitely skate. He’s fast as F**K.
But do I think he turned the corner and am I confident he’ll be able to sustain this level of play and production? Probably not. More likely he regresses back to his past history and becomes more of a liability.
He needs to be paired with a stay at home D-man too cause he joins the rush and pinches way too often.
Last season he got away with it b/c he was paired with Ruhwedel most often. He was paired with Letang for awhile too when Dumoulin was hurt. But Ruhwedel the majority of the season.
Him and Marino paired together never worked. Both his and Marino’s production, underlying stats, and analytics suffered tremendously when paired together.
You got to love it for the Penguins. GO PENS GO
I can see a situation where Kent Hughes prefered Matheson a 4th round pick and Rem Pitlick for Petry (who don't want to play for Montreal anymore, even if he had a great time here) in exchange for Ryan Poehling. I think Montreal are the loosers but because Jeff Petry does'nt want to play for a canadian team anymore, it's kinda of a win/win. Look at the Burn's trade. Pacioretty's trade. Right now, trades are about money. And I think, as a Montréal fan, it's… not too bad… not much. But you have to include the Rem Pitlick signing into it or Pens won the trade. It's an OK trade for both team I guess.
Is this the right trade for the habs? YES! Hughes you trusted me. Good job!
hughes needed to clear cap space asap to sign pitlick before he went anywhere else… he is the new better version of byron, really underrated player! petry wanted out for family reason, no doubt he will play good in pittsburgh people need to forget one bad year after wanting out for that time… win win for both teams, poehling wasnt in the plans anymore and considering what san jose or vegas had to give to clear up cap space im really happy for what habs got in return
wanting to really get more than a 4th round pick just to lose pitlick isnt any better, 2 years at only 1.1m is a steal
Habs fans were telling me that they are getting a 1st and a top prospect back for Petry🤣
This guy is off. Completely overvaluing Peohling and Petry
I don't know why everyone is surprised by this trade. Yes, of course on paper Pittsburgh wins. Jeff had a bad season and "everyone" knew he wanted out of Montreal. Any competent GM will take advantage of this information to want more out of Montreal. Sure, Hughes said if he doesn't get anything good in return, he would retain Petry but if Petry plays this season like he did last season away from his family, he might play the same was as last season and this not going to help the Habs win. The Habs did get a decent Defenseman in return to help keep Pittsburg cap down. I'm sorry about Poehling but it looks like the Habs had to sweeten the deal for a team to take Petry off their hands. FTR, I thought Poehling was going to improve with time. He just needed more ice time. That being said, I really liked Pitlick and was sad when I heard the Canadiens didn't give him a qualifying offer. Pitlick had a bigger impact on the team than Poehling. So at least moving Peohling is going to give more room for Pitlick. the kid's played what, 77 games in his career? He averages .5 points per game? That's pretty good.
Side note, Matheson was one of Hughes clients when he was an agent. And Matheson is from Montreal. So I'm sure that played into the decision to trade for him.
There's also the whole Cap issue. I really do think there's a problem with the cap. It's too low. Guys, Vegas traded Pacioretty to Carolina for NOTHING! Pacioretty is 6'2", 215lbs and averaged a point a game the last 2 season baring injuries. He's under contract 1 more season at $7M. Vegas couldn't even get a draft pick out of him. Why not? Why are teams afraid to trade for a 30+ goal scorer? Sure, he's been in better shape but for nothing? It's his salary. teams are afraid to take on salary. Not many teams have the room and every team knew Vegas was stuck. So be happy Hughes was able to get something out of Petry's trade because the Canadiens are also up against the cap.
For 1the reason the Habs made this deal cause there hands were tied.petry let it be known he wanted out .which seriously hampered his value.that they got a descent defenseman and a pick to get rid of him and get some cap relief was a miracle. Poehling days were over when we acquired Dach he dropped out of the top 4centers did him favor
I mean, Petry is 34 (vs Matheson 28), costs more (1 year less though) and, more importantly, Petry kept asking to be traded in a US market for family reasons (While Matheson lifted his NMC to come in mtl I believe). The fact that Petry wanted to leave and that Matheson agreed to come to Mtl will have a significant impact on the locker room's overall mood and Matheson will probably be a better mentor for our many upcoming rookies than Petry (since, once again, he wanted to leave, beside that I believe he'd be a good mentor too).
Based on all that, the simple fact that we got something back from that trade (compared to trades like Pacioretty, Burns and Mcdonagh) without retaining any Petry's salary cap? That's a win. Not a huge win, but a win for Montreal.
And its also a win for Pitts who wants to win now, Petry will fit perfectly far from the pressure behind a guy like Letang. But get used to Petry's tendencies, the guy plays like a norris candidate for 1-2 months, than plays like a n-4-5 dman for the next 2 months. That's why he's a great n-3.
Regarding Poehling, I don't hate the guy, might have some potential left in him, but he's probably literally the only habs player last year that did not step up his game once MSL came along… with Suz, Dvorak, Dach and Evans (+ Dubois rumors), no room left for him. Hopefully he'll pan out in Pitts.
Petry = 34 years old, and Matheson 28. Now we have Edmunston, Matheson and Ghule, 3 veterans who will help right wingers
I hope his wife is happy. She put a real damper in his career.
I don't think it was a bad deal, considering that Petry made it crystal clear. He doesn't want to play in Canada anymore because of family issues. So if that good deal would have not shown up Montréal would have had a very unmotivated and expensive d man in their roster. And peeling was in all honesty an ok player in Montréal at best. So in return the Habs got a younger and cheaper D man. And cap space that might be used to get Pierre Luc Dubois. Plus keeping Rem Pitlic. This is the best management the Habs have seen for a long time. And I think this could make Montréal a winning team. Next year
Petry overrated, and this is why they got what they got in return
It was all about cap flex. You can only have 3 retained contracts on your books at one time. This enables them to retain on Dadonov, Drouin and Byron this year. If the retained on Petry, he'd be on the books for 3 years which limits what they can do.
I agree. It seems like Habs rushed the Petry trade. They should have gotten more…I will not miss Poehling…
Perry won this trade. What he showed last year is that he can't take the pressure at being the top D. With Letang he can sit back into a more comfortable. I expect petry to have a good session. For Matheson, he is going to be under a lot of pressure in Montreal.
Honestly, as a Pens fan, I’m excited that Matheson is gone. He scored 2 own goals in the playoffs, one leading to a rangers comeback in game 7. Also, I’ve heard good things about Jeff Petry, so this is very exciting!
Poehling is a bust. Jeff Petry has only a couple of good years left (which does not fit with our rebuild). The 4th pick is a throw in and Matheson will cost less on the hit cap and is younger and easier to move down the road. Win-win trade. Good luck to the Pens.
Pittsburgher here SO HAPPY to get Petry
You have no idea what your talking about , Petry was a second round draft pick and Matheson being a 1 round draft pick coming to his prime , Petry at Matheson was on a much worse trajectory then him …
Petry needed to leave before training camp. Too much of a distraction. Distraction now gone. Welcome Matheson from Pointe-Claire, Que. 👍 Also more trades on the way.
As a pens fan Matheson can FLY like the wind. His skating is superb! But he just doesn't put it all together. He def grew on me since we got him.
Although this past playoffs my dude scored like 4 own goals off his skate. 1 or 2 bad luck but they were back breakers every one of them.
you should watch the "the sick podcast" of Marinaro, on that trade, there's lots of advanced stats on the player and it seems to be a good trade for the Canadien's
Good job Hextall you just got another Jack Johnson but a locker room cancer!
I think this is a decent trade. Both are good defenceman plus another draft pick, for less money.
As a habs fan, I'm pretty satisfied. poehbear was falling on the depth chart and was crippled by bad player development from the habs and being rushed to NHL too soon. He has been getting surpassed by other prospects, and so at this point his value for the team was low. I would even say detrimental to other prospect opportunities. Petry wanted to leave, and this is not a good thing for a lockerroom of young players trying to build team morale. In return, you get Mike Matheson an underrated dman who is 6 years younger and draft capital. But you also get Rem Pitlick, who was not able to be signed without the cap. So the trade really is kind of like a 3 way trade. Rem pitlick, mike matheson and 4th rounder for Jeff Petry and Ryan Poehbear. I like the move, I think it was subtle and strategic.
I don't understand why some people have a problem with this trade from the Habs point of view. As a Hab fan, and I admit I'm biased – but I like this deal and I certainly don't see this as a big win for Pittsburgh in any way. Some actual facts:
Petry will be 35 in a few months and carries a big Cap hit at $6.3 Mil. Matheson is 28 and has a lesser salary of $4.75 Mil. Matheson scored more points and was more solid defensively than Petry last year – so based on that alone, I gave Montreal the edge. Furthermore, Matheson is from Montreal and he's thrilled to be going back home – just at a time when he is hitting his peak years as a D Man. As for Petry, sorry but his best days are in his rear view mirror. The wild card in this trade is Poehling but Habs have a glut of young forwards so trading him is understandable. If Poehling establishes himself as a solid top 9 forward for the Pens, then they have the edge in this deal but if not, then its a draw at very worst. Habs saved money on the Cap and considering the circumstances with Petry wanting to be traded, I like the deal.
You know what I think both side win this trade, I feel like this year my point will be proven, Penguins fan told me Mike Math is great and undervalued, Poehling is overated and Petry is still a a good defenseman, so at the end of the day is fairly equal
