  1. The problem for the Isles was Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum and Nassau County. The county owned the arena and the Isles made profits from it, but they couldn't really do much to improve it. The franchise was also promised (by the county) a rail connection to NVMC but that never materialized. The owners found out pretty quickly that the team was a money pit that was barely profitable through the MSG contract (TLDR- the Isles were added to MSG- the Rangers network- on a super cushy deal to keep them off of Sportschannel).

Charles Wang bought the team after 2000 in an attempt to build a new arena and develop the region- it was called the Lighthouse Project. It was a good idea, but Nassau politicians (both parties) screwed it up and Wang eventually moved the team out of Nassau to Brooklyn (which was it's own series of headaches) and then sold 2/3rds of the team to Malkin and Ledecky. They're real estate magnates, who knew how to get sh*t done in NY. And they did.

So, while the team was massively successful in the 80s and the fanbase was always there, the money just wasn't there. Only in recent years has NY state realized just how much the Isles were being screwed over and they effectively forced Nassau to bring the Isles into Belmont, which finally was approved this week (thanks, Governor Fredo!).

Now that the Isles will have their own arena in 2021-2022, I think things are going to be very, very different.

  2. I think that they can get back to being good. New arena, swathes of prospects on their way, and the best coach in hockey alongside some deeply underrated players in nelson, eberle and bailey

  3. Islanders next year will not be as good next year. Loosing Lehner will hurt.

  4. Thanks for doing Shannon, in my list of Hockey scorers, Bossy is ahead of Lemieux and frankly leads current/recent goal scorers in goals per game averages. Nobody has beaten his goals per game. Shame about his back injury never got the FULL kudos.

  5. When Met owner Picket sold minority shares to those 4 bankers, they created the Fish-stick uniforms and Fired Torrey, who went to Florida. They hired Milbury, who foolishly ran this once proud franchise to the ground. How Milbury works for NHL.com as an expert commentator after ruining a proud franchise is beyond me. He set the team back at least two decades with his trades. If he had kept a few of those players, Chara, Redden, McCabe, Bertuzzi, Palffy, Kasparaitis, Luongo, Spezza to name a few they would have been contenders, but he kept making dumb trades. I just passed Belmont Arena site. They broke ground yesterday! We can only go forward from the Fish sticks /Milbury era.

  6. Mike Bossy and Marcel Dionne (LA) are 2 overrated players imo they were gunfighters in a town with few outlaws they kinda got lucky with their career windows

  7. Pat LaFontaine was a hold out who made it known he wanted out of Long Island in 1991. So, getting Pierre Turgeon, Benoit Hogue, and Uwe Krup for him was a real good trade for them. Turgeon was great until Dale Hunter damn near killed him for scoring a goal after Hunter's own give away. That mugging will piss me off forever!

  8. Always a big fan of Lafontaine !! He was such a good player and too bad he arrived at the end of the dynasty. If he didn't get all those concussions.

  9. Top draft pick was Mike Bossy at pick 16 in 1977. Rangers twice-TWICE!-could have had the Boss and instead selected Lucien Deblois and Ron Duguay. Didn't work out very well for the Blueshirts but great in Uniondale..
