I feel that Gerber was ruined by playing in the Olympics. He played lights out in the Olympics! Maybe he got burnt out. I was concerned in the last month of play in the regular season. When I watch the DVD highlights of that playoff, my friends say why didn't Brind'Amour win the Conn Smythe. A good argument can be made for that for sure since he scored some huge goals! But they wouldn't have gotten past Montreal without Ward.
I always hear people bash that 2006 Canes team as being one of the worst Cup winners ever and it's super frustrating. I sincerely don't get it. That team was incredibly deep. Three lines that could score and probably the best 4th line in hockey that year. Seven defensemen that could all skate well, move the puck and blocked shots.
That team was so stacked at forward they lost a PPG player (Erik Cole) and didn't miss a beat. Staal may never have had another season like that but was a 70-80 point player for a long time and is still productive. Will probably end up with 1100-1200 points career by the time he retires. BrindAmour was underappreciated in his time because we didn't make much use of advanced stats then. People don't understand how good that guy was. He deserved to have 10 Selkes.
They had 112 points during the regular season – and people make the excuse, it's because they played in the Southeast. Except, if you actually look at their record that year, they didn't perform that well in their own division. They earned more points per game in games played outside the division than within.
The other thing is, it didn't come totally out of nowhere. A big chunk of that roster was present when they got to the SCF against Detroit in 2002. And another chunk of the 2006 roster was still around when they got to the ECF in 2009.
People need to put more respect on names like Brind'Amour, Glen Wesley, Ray Whitney, Bret Hedican, Matt Cullen, etc. Just because they don't have a reputation as elite Hall of Fame players don't mean they weren't among the best in the game at the time. A lot of it is just due to Carolina not being a favored geographical location for some people and that's a shame, because if you dismiss a guy like Rod Brind'Amour because he played for a team that was south of the Mason-Dixon line you're just being an idiot.

A great team but I know why they are disrespected
1. They played in the weakest division
2. No stars on the team (Staal was a -8 that year)
3. In the playoffs didn't really verse a team that can actually beat them in a 7 game series. Detroit loss in the 1st round, Calgary lost in the first round and Edmonton was an 8th seed without there best goalie.
So great team but probably the luckiest team in Stanley Cup history.

There was a huge goaltending blunder playing the puck in Game 1 of the Finals. May have cost Edmonton the Cup. You should have mentioned it.
I moved to Carolina during the lockout and didn't really have a favorite team, I just enjoyed the league as a whole. My new friend in NC was a huge Canes fan and I started watching every game post lockout and the canes went on an amazing run that ended after game 7 with us going crazy hugging and celebrating. It was my favorite sports moment of my lifetime and to this day I get emotional when I rewatch the Williams empty net goal.
If they keep playing the way they are in 2021, they might get the cup again.

Frank Kaberle is the only NHL player to score a Stanley Cup winning goal while also also having less than 50 career goals. Still love that guy for it though.

Soo many new players this season for Carolina: Cory Stillman, Ray Whitney, Matt Cullen, Frantisek Kaberle, Mike Commodore, Cam Ward and Martin Gerber. Also picking up Doug Weight and Mark Recchi as rentals. This team was the most underdog team who won the Cup of All Time
Rod Brind'Amour is my all time favorite player. I play a lot of EA's NHL series and built a franchise around a top line of Brind'Amour, Benoit Hogue and Valeri Bure. Won a few Cups.
Buffalo had about 6 starters injured by the time game 7 of the ECF rolled around. Carolina caught fire at the right time and was fortunate at the right time too. think they could go to the cup this year too
