  1. "Top shelf where Mama hides the cookies" is one of the all-time great calls in hockey broadcasting. He went back to it over and over and it was great every time. His quick wit was a huge part of his talent, leading to so many memorable calls. A perfect example was his call of an Alexander Mogilny goal in the early 90s.

"OH MY! ALEXANDER MOGILNY! Who says this guy's afraid to fly? He left a Vapor trail!!"

For context, Mogilny arrived in Buffalo in 1990 after a harrowing and dangerous defection from the Soviet Union (link to THAT amazing story below). He also had an overwhelming fear of flying that led to him missing games and taking limo rides instead of the charter flights during the early part of his NHL career. In that moment, Rick had the awareness & quick wit to remember that within seconds of his goal that day and worked it into his call.

Here's the link to the almost unbelievable story of Mogilny escaping from the KGB thanks to the Sabres picking him up at a mall in Stockholm. The Soviet players had a rare day off after Mogilny led them to victory at the World Championship. The whole situation played out like a legit spy thriller, no exaggeration.

  2. Just sitting here watching this before tonight’s RJ Banner Hanging game. Wow, I can’t imagine growing up listening to another Buffalo Sabres commentator.

  3. Pretty damn good highlight reel here,, however you left a lot out from the Gilbert Perrault era ,, understand yes he was the radio guy at that time but I'm sure you could have found some film and linked up the audio,, he had some amazing calls just as the radio guy !!!

  4. It doesn't get any better. I'm not even a sabers fan but he gets me so fired up with his excitement for the game.

  5. Such a shame we weren't able to get back into the playoffs this last decade.

  6. My husband and I watched the Sabres game tonight and they no doubt won it for RJ. Love how he was named the #1 star after the game. Truly iconic announcer.

  7. One of the best ever I am a Canucks fan for life .. but I loved watching highlights of this guy calling goals

  8. Top 10 are also the bottom ten because the sabers have only scored 10 since the beginning of his career

  9. If that doesn’t get your energy rolling, you don’t have a pulse! Thank you Rick for all the excitement over the years!

  10. I would’ve loved to hear Rick at a boxing game…..”aaaareee you ready , to rummmmbbbllleeeeeeee” ……homage to the best announcer of all time! Have a Happy retirement Rick!

  11. RJ’s calls for any Pat LaFontaine goal should be ranked higher. I’ll agree that the Brad May “May Day!” call is his best.

  12. RJ was one of the best for sure, His passion for the game and the Sabres were awesome.

  13. I'm a back-up play by play commentator for a local Junior B team but I could only rub a genie's lamp and wish to be as good as Rick Jeanneret. This guy will always be my favorite hockey play by play guy ever.
