1. As a blues fan, they can’t lose this trade regardless of how good Thompson becomes, cause they won a cup. I have no regret or sadness over the trade.

  2. I love how Blues fans think Reilly won the cup by himself. And how the Sabers traded a stanly cup for Thompson. This is how they rationalize not recognizing Tages talent before they face palmed.

  3. Would Thompson be as good now if Eichel still would be a Sabre? I don`t think so, many times when the star franchise player leaves the others have to step up their game and really bloom to their full potential.

  4. I enjoy Steve Dangle's "trade tree" videos, but seeing the yearly numbers side-by-side helps put things into perspective. I wouldn't mind seeing you do more videos like this.

  5. We just need GOALTENDING we have a GM and Coach tandem that has seemed to work well Don Gronato has done very well here and shouldn't ever be fired until we have a goaltender…. Figure it out like the Bills did and it started with a GM and Coach

  6. Eric "Freaking" Karlsson. Seriously though, the moment I saw you do this one, triggers/alarms set off. It wasn't all the other "stuff" in this trade (Thompson incl) that made this trade interesting, it was the Berglund part. People forget and might not remember, but Mr Berglund, i believe had a modified-NTC, and I believe this was one of those teams (only learned about after the fact-the trade had happened). He didn't want to go to Buffalo and simply resigned. ex. Dadanov from Vegs to Anaheim, but the trade went ahead. Those modified-NTCs and Berglund's NTC just became a modified NTC. This had nothing to do with the fans, but everything to do with mis-management.

  7. Just like Eichel, O'Reilly needed to be moved. He was just too much noise. There was no way he would have had that successful season in Buffalo while Eichel was there. I'm glad the trade is finally paying off for the Sabres.

  8. I was hoping for a video like this. Any sane Blues fan of course will still take the trade and the cup but wow what a player Thompson has become. Very good trade for both teams, seems kind of more rare these days.

  9. Let’s see if Thompson’s play can translate in the post-season, if Buffalo can get in. Thompson has already been in the league for 6 years with zero playoff games.

  10. looking forward to a video like this about the huberdeau and Tkachuk trade where literally everyone said Flames ran Panthers over… I wonder what it's gonna look like in a couple years.

  11. St. Louis won trade lol there is no argument. Ryan O’Reilly literally won the damn Conn Smythe, Cup, Lady Byng and Selke one year after the trade.

  12. Shannon your years are off for Thompson's stats. He had 26 points in his first 3 seasons with buffalo. 2019-20 was the season he only played 1 game. the stats you have from 18-19 are from the prior season he played for St louis

  13. It would be interesting to see a history of 6+ point games (and if it’s long just in the modern era) and see who has done it multiple times in the same season like Thompson has.

  14. I live in STL. I still don't hear anyone regretting this trade. How could you? It 100% directly led to they're only cup. They could've traded every single prospect in the organization and all of the picks they were allowed and it STILL would've been worth it

  15. Imagine The Sabres got Jack Hughes or Zegras with that first if the blues stayed bad. Then O Rielly wouldn’t have been such a good pickup

  16. Tage was a shell of his self now after trade…he was a skinny kid who constantly was knocked off the puck….he physically filled out a year ago….totally different player now….man vs a boy…

  17. Let's try this again: Trades are made in one moment, with the information available at the time. If I trade a seventh rounder for Connor McDavid, I fleeced the Oilers, period. No, that doesn't change if he suffers a career-killing injury on his first shift. It's about the probabilities of degree of return value at the time of the trade.

It is disingenuous to judge trades in hindsight, whether a given asset improves or declines in value. If you want to apply a speculative value range for each asset (especially prospects), that's fine. But the evaluation of this trade should remain whatever speculative value range for Thompson, the picks, Sobotka, and Berglund vs. that of O'Reilly on July 1, 2018.

  18. Buffalo still should have gotten more. If they had added a conditional first round pick, that if Blues win the Cup Sabres get another first rounder; Blues still happily make that trade.

Yes, both sides are happy with the deal. But if you trade me a Lamborghini for a hockey jersey; it's not a good deal simply because you are happy with the hockey jersey. Not when I would have happily given you the hockey jersey and a lot more for the car.

  19. The Tyler Sagian trade to Dallas from Boston worked out good for boston in the end

  20. Id rather have st Louis Stanley cup win then tage Thompson. That said buffalo fans I think will be happy with buffaloes picks and trades in the end. This young core needs to win now before their rookie contracts all run out. But the sabers have sucked for a decade so this core better win something or all these high draft picks will be for nothing. Dahlin looks great, cozans looks great. Power looks great, tage Thompson looks epic. They should have kept ulmark

  21. I think the blues can turn the season around. They’ve showed they can play hockey just need to figure it out. Glad Thompson is doing well Don’t think he would’ve ended up an all star in STL though

  22. Not about trades and I'm a Caps fan:
Whenever I see something about a high scoring young player I always find myself thinking about the goals watch with Ovechkin. What I'm thinking is that we're going to be doing this again in the next two decades.
The question has been who's going to be the next Gretzky. I think we can agree Ovi is not the next Gretzky. When I say that it's not about ranking. Not making a GOAT argument here, although to be a bit of a troll…
    What about Gretzky's assists?
Oh yeah, how many hits did he have in his last ten years?
    …and discuss
They're not the same player. Other than netting goals they're really really different. So the question becomes who's going to be the next Gretzky or Ovechkin. Nobody.
The next player, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was more than one, who takes up the mantle is going to be just as different as G and O are to each other now.
So anyway, guess I felt like writing a little essay. Thanks for reading.

  23. Here's to hoping Tage comes to Boston!! We have a good track record of improving former Sabres players lol.

  24. I always thought that the ROR trade was a mistake. On the same note, ROR wanted out. He publicly stated that he lost his passion for the game in Buffalo. TT might turn out to be the hidden gem but not long ago all three trades (TT, Berglund, and Sobotka) was out of the lineup for various reasons and as a Sabres fan I wasnt impressed.

  25. Thompson switch to center was his trigger. Granato deserves praise spotting it.

  26. Not entirely the same but I think this is extremely similar to the Nieuwendyk Iginla trade. Neither team lost that deal

  27. I don't remember what anyone else thought at the time, but my 16-year-old self was not happy in 1986 when the Bruins traded away Barry Pederson for a first-round pick and some nobody named Cam Neely. My opinion of both assets they got changed with time. I certainly would not argue that both Boston and Vancouver won this trade.

  28. I still say the blues won this trade 🤷‍♂️
Truth is Tage Thompson stands out because he’s on a below average team and a lot of the offense runs through him
He wouldn’t have cracked the second line last year for the blues and Thompson scored 60 points
He’s a good player but let’s not act like he’s going to win the MVP
I have nothing against the guy but the blues still have won the trade at this point

  29. Just 1 small thing about Ryan Johnson: He never signed and is UFA eligible on August 15th. He's already committed to playing in the NCAA this year, meaning he won't be able to play in the NHL until around April. Even if he signed with the Sabres immediately after the NCAA season, he'd only be getting around 10 more games (not including playoffs) over going the UFA route. At this point it seems almost guaranteed that he doesn't sign and the asset is wasted. So the trade has essentially ended up being Tage Thompson for Ryan O'Reilly 1 for 1.
