I hope this is just us hitting a lull. A lot of really sloppy play the last few games. Careless turnovers and guys getting a little too cute with the puck. I know he was hung out to dry a few times the last few games but Vitek has looked like shit on more than one occasion too. The quick goals concern me as well. A few games in a row now that we’ve given up consecutive quick goals. That was shit we saw constantly last year.

  2. peppy871

The Boquist line has been a black hole that creates nothing but scoring opportunities for the other team. Obviously getting Bastian and Palat back will help but too much on the line to ride it out and keep that line together.

  3. pro_omnibus

Losing Bastian dropped this team down from having four solid lines to two lines and Ruff is clearly weary to play anyone outside of the Hughes/Hischier lines.

Both lines can dominate but the added usage is clearly impacting them, especially as the games go on.

  4. kyletres

Shitty loss because they were the better team most the night 5v5 . I personally hate the loser point but at least it benefits them tonight.

Special teams a concern tonight again. Seems like that has lost them some games recently. Gotta turn that around. Also goaltending wasn’t fantastic and that goal in OT was probably one he should’ve gotten

  5. TomatoNoah

Good game, just can’t keep momentum and score

  6. njdevils901

This team has a major problem coming back from allowing a goal, lots of goals in bunches from opposing teams.

  7. marshall658

The boys really need to cash in on some of these big opportunities when they have a chance to put the game away. Power plays, odd-man rushes, breakaways…I don’t know what it is but they seem to take their foot off the gas sometimes. When they’re down, they fire away. When they get the lead they seem to get too precise looking for perfect plays. It’s just weird and I don’t know if it’s on the coaches or players or what.

  8. silvermarsh

Maybe Bastian is just the cornerstone of this team, I dunno.

Can’t be coasting through the second half of December, these games are too big to do that.

  9. chariotarcana

I’ve been thinking jokingly the past few games « who would have thought that Nate Bastian was the glue holding our team together? » but now I’m starting to think it for real, haha. Still glad to pick up a point at least. Can’t wait to have 4 lines back in full swing.

  10. imsocooldude

Holtz is still at least a year away. Wondering his trade value.

  11. gmen8687

We played well tonight, frustrated with the refs the most honestly. But we desperately need some depth back and Holtz is no where near ready for the NHL.

  12. ClassicCanadian6

I cannot wait for Luke to round out our defence

  13. First loss this year that really feels like one we should have won. These types of losses sting but every team goes through them. Just gotta make sure we don’t fall into an extended slump here.

  14. DontDraftSmall

Igor outplayed Vitek. End of analysis.

  15. haltiamreptar21

The loss stings, but some of you are extra salty. 3 out of 4 points from the Rangers so far. Outside of a terrible penalty call and 7 seconds where we forgot how to skate, this game is ours. I definitely think that the Devils were the better team tonight, just didn’t have the puck luck. On to the next game tomorrow.

  16. TheDopestTrip

That’s 2 games that were were on the verge of achieving a record…. and the refs throw the game with some questionable calls. Doesn’t feel like a coincidence.
Also, our 4rth « line » is a mess, and the Rangers goal song is fucking atrocious.

  17. mrSeven3Two

Refs kept em in it and we imploded. Two quick goals hurt us and Hughes not putting the game away with the PS.

  18. mrSeven3Two

Also 3v3 is so stupid. It’s basically just dance around the neutral zone for 90% of it.

  19. multicolorhair

Severson the fucking traffic cone in OT puck watching as much as he can.

You want to improve this team? get rid of him finally

  20. Vash2002

Rangers fan who comes in peace here..

Entertaining as hell game. I really like what the devils have done with their team in terms of development and signings. You guys are fun to watch and I’m really excited for the next few seasons of seeing great rivalry games between those two teams.

  21. BruceCable

Did holtz play tonight? That was tough to watch in person – had a guy pushing 50 in a trench coat in front of me that turned around after the first and second goal and yelled “how about that?!” After each. To which I pointed at the scoreboard. This loss was personal to me, and I will see trench coat man again. Whether he knows it or not… to be continued

  22. MaroonMarauder

Fuck that. 2 phantom calls in the 2nd and the latter of the 2 was a huge momentum shifter. We still need to tighten back up to how we were playing last month, but man it sucks when the other team gets gifts like that.

Need to shrug this shit off and come back out tomorrow.

  23. TronVin

The Devils about to get their franchise record win streak. Toronto comes to town and three disallowed goals. Devils lose.

The Devils about to get an NHL record away win streak. Play Rangers and they get two penalties where the Devils never touched them. Devils lose.

How am I supposed to look at this fairly? Its weird the Devils are about to break records against Original 6 teams and the refs get involved both times.

  24. TheDopestTrip

I swear, if The Hockey Guy wears a Rangers jersey tonight on the review, I’m unsubscribing from him.

  25. RolloTamaci

I will say, they definitely addressed the problem of coming out of the gate sloppy which leads me to believe they can address the problems they had late tonight. At least we got a point.

    Fuck the Rangers.

  26. MountainBaker8217

    My Jumbled Thoughts:

    – We need four lines. I don’t know what to do about that Holtz-Shango-Boqvist line, but we need to roll out four lines that play mostly even minutes and we need to roll out a fourth line that we don’t have a heart attack over every time they’re out on the ice. Something’s gotta change there.

    – Vitek is solid, but he’s not gonna win every game for us, so we gotta make sure our 2B gets some ice time.

    – We need complete games now. We owned the first half of the first period and the first half of the second period, but had mini collapses in the second halves of both those periods.

    – We need to finish. The best thing about us was that we had depth scoring.

    – Hughes and Mercer are magic. Keep them together.

    – ZMW line just needs some finish and they’ll be a really solid replacement for the BMW line.

    – I’m not crazy worried, but the rest of the year is going to be an insane stretch versus lots of very good teams and we can go toe to toe with all of them when we’re playing our game, so lets do that, please.

    – I love Nico so damn much and I know that Tatar is having a good year, but I wish Nico would shoot more and pass to Tatar less.

    – When is Palat coming back? Any word on Bastian?

  27. NJDevils30

Pretty much the entire team had a good game besides the 4th line & Vanecek

    https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Fj0zfovX0AI30bL?format=jpg&name=medium

    Can’t win them all

And yes there were some very questionable (first one legit a phantom call) calls but the Devils should have been able to put that one away. And I fully think that refs manage games and the league wants more close games. Just gotta kill the penalties and play your game

  28. Lookin4Rockets

Stay positive. Bastian and Palat will make a huge difference when they’re back. They’re a young team, mistakes will happen. Holtz play has been a huge concern and that whole line is holding us back. VV hasn’t been playing the best, he’s been battling the puck the last few games. All in all we’re making mistakes that can be corrected.

At the end of the day, this team just needs to make the playoffs and build that experience.

Look at the positives that show so much improvement from last year… Mercer is a beast, hughes is getting better and better, hischier’s puck control is next level this year, marino is one of the best d-men in the league, etc.

Realistically, this team isn’t winning the cup this year with this goaltending and the horrific powerplay.. but at least we now have a team to watch every night that puts up a fight and is entertaining to watch and follow… we didn’t have that for a whole decade.

  29. We need a real third line ZMW should be a 4th line and Holtz isn’t ready clearly. Maybe AJ plays better with this team this year idk

  30. marshall658

Can I ask what the point is of playing Holtz every night only to seemingly bench him every night also? Like, at some point just make the change. I never thought I’d say this but just put Mango in the lineup.

  31. junkyardpig

I think they should sub Johnsson in for Holtz tomorrow. I bet Johnsson is hungry, and Holtz hasn’t done much to stay in

  32. dadphobia

Vanecek looks like Blackwood lately 🙁

  33. That’s a couple bad games in a row from Vitek 🤷‍♂️

  34. IAwaitAGuardian

HELLO ARE WE BAD NOW? – Facebook.

  35. DekeaSaurusRex

Obviously losing to the rangers is brutal, but is it just me or has our game really had a giant drop off. I knew our 80-20 and even 90-10 dominance early was going to drop, but now it feels like it is 50-50 and even some games recently we were outplayed. Really is disappointing because im not sure what they need to do to get out of this. I feel like holtz needs to come out and just get someone like johnsson in because that line has been so bad. Am i just overrating because we are losing?

  36. pu1pfriction

It’s hard to play our game when we’re rolling only 3 lines, the guys are getting tired

  37. sendingSTRENGTH

Honestly, this may sound like a kneejerk reaction but it isnt. We really need another forward, i thought Palat coming back would act as that but this game has not played a full season in like 5-6 years and it seems we may even need him to bolster the bottom 6.

    NJ receives:

    Timo Meier

    SJ receives:

    Nolan Foote
    Alexander Holtz
    Shakir Mukhamadulin
    2nd round pick
    3rd round pick

Team is over congested with good prospects from lots of good drafting, i think this team still has a lot to work with after the fact (and I like doing foote a favor, he needs a place with more opportunity) and this way they can keep their 1st in this years draft.

    Tatar – Nico – Bratt

    Mercer – Jack – Meier

    Wood – McLeod – Bastian

    Zetterlund – Haula – Shango

    (Palat, Boqvist)

Next year everyone slots up with Tatar off the books.

  38. MountainBaker8217

I just want to point out this is our first two losses in a row since the very beginning of this season.

  39. Lookin4Rockets

Anyone else think Bratt has been pretty disappointing recently? He looks different… much less confident. Hughes needs to learn faceoffs so we can roll Hughes, Bratt, Mercer. That would be lethal. Bratt plays so much better with Hughes on his line.

  40. Garbage performance. PP=trash. Goaltending=trash. And people will continue to make excuses. Schedule only gets tougher.

  41. R0ADHAU5

The power play desperately needs to improve. I think that solves itself a bit when Palat comes back but we need something until then.

Is there anyone in Utica that can come up? Because Holtz is not getting it done. He shows flashes and his D awareness has improved but I haven’t seen anything to convince me he’s the answer right now. I think Tyce Thomson should get a few games if he’s healthy (I think he missed some time earlier this year?). He doesn’t have the shot, but he’s a better Bastian replacement imo.

  42. MountainBaker8217

Teams go through slumps. Its bound to happen. I mean the Pens had like a seven game losing streak from the end of Oct to the beginning of Nov and now they’re on a six game winning streak and have jumped from like second last in the Metro to second.

I’m not even calling this a slump for the Devils. We’re not playing our best hockey recently, but we haven’t gone on a crazy losing streak and what this team does really well is regroup and address its mistakes.

The Devils have a totally different culture in that locker room now and that really makes a difference. They’re not just going to settle for losses and slumps, they’re going to fucking work at it and try to do better. I really think the leadership in that locker room and whatever is being said and done in practices makes a stark difference from last year to this year.

  43. thoughtful-hippo

Jeez, did I show up at a funeral here? C‘mon, folks! Yeah, stinks to lose in OT, but that effort will win far more games than it loses. And three out of four points at MSG is a job well done.

Also, I want Bastian and Palat back as much as the next guy, but injuries are part of the deal over an 82-game season. They’ll be back — and then someone else will be out. This is the first time in a decade we are actually in a position to weather the storm when it comes to injuries.

  44. markydelafayette

At least we got a point. Sloppy loss, but it just didn’t go our way. Fuck the refs.

  45. vtloncto14

I think the teams needs a little more size / physicality. I don’t have any stats but it felt like the rangers were finishing all their checks but the devils weren’t.. just me?

  46. Spoonbread

Doom aside. Boqvist is a passenger, Sharangovich is being misused, Holtz is a liability at the moment. They’ve been playing with 3 lines since Bastian got hurt and that’s what has made the team look so much worse than they did in the time between Palat going down and Bastian going down.

  47. Lookin4Rockets

Hughes needs to get better at faceoffs so we can get Haula off his line. Don’t get me wrong, Haula has been alright, and does his job well enough… but he doesn’t contribute enough in the offensive zone. He isn’t a threat offensively and it holds back that line. If we had Bratt on that line with Hughes and Mercer… i think the team improves significantly.
