I recently realized I don’t know much about the official pucks. So I did some research and there’s some cool tech in there.
I’m really curious – and not offended if you don’t want to indulge me on this – what happens if you put it in the freezer?
Basically, pucks can get warm during play – and so they become more elastic/bouncy. Meaning (I think) faster slap shots and rebounds. So refs do their best to make sure they’re dropping a frozen puck on every faceoff. It’s even in the rulebook (Rule 13) that the home team is responsible for supplying frozen pucks to the officials.
In the 2019 Winter Classic, the pucks had special temperature-sensitive ink on them (sort of like the Coors cold-as-the-Rockies blue mountains on the can). The markings on the puck would become purple when the pucks were below freezing. I’m wondering if they’re still doing that and your puck would be a great guinea pig!
Edit: also, what’s up with the 6 circles around the center that look indented? Is that to make sure it doesn’t somehow get used again in a game?
