He came out against the war when the invasion started…

  2. RageAgainstTheNight

These people would sing a different tune if their families were still in Russia.

  3. Calm-Associate-214

He doesn’t want any of his family members accidentally fall out of a window 15 stories up!

  4. DrTopps

    Shame on them.

It isn’t easy being a Russian Athlete abroad. And Ovi has handled it with amazing grace…

The media needs to not put him in questionable situations, where by the ask might actually put Ovi or his loved ones in danger…

Some people just don’t understand the brutality of Russias administration against their own… you have to get along to go along…. Especially when you’ve largely been the face of sports in Russia for two decades

  5. Wall2Beal43

I agree with the headline. Dude posted against “fascist ukraine” in 2014. I feel very complicated about him breaking the record when before the recent war I’d been all for it

  6. pear-shaped-jack

It’s a wannabe « serious » journalist who can’t do their job and report on sports. Probably loves the smell of his own farts.

  7. Justus44

Ovi said hes against any wars. That should be the end of that. Ovi is russian. He didn’t bring the politics to sports. USA did, when they started their camping to ban all Russian athletes from multinational competitions. First it was on premise of doping (like they are the only who does that), now it’s supposed to be about Ukraine.

Every war is bad, right? That’s what Ovi said.
What else do you want from him? To renounce his citizenship in Russia? What if he loves his country? He suppose to love it only when it’s convenient? Americans still love their country, even after all the horrors NATO brought to middle east and Africa, killing hundreds of thousands, provoking terrorist group formation, even destroying whole countries and sending them back into slavery economics (Libya).
So why the fuck should he denounce his country or it’s officially elected president?

  8. BallsMahoganey

The author is giving off some major small ween energy

Of course r/hockey is eating it up. Softest sub on Reddit by far.

  9. JRNS2018

Calm down Sportsnet. He’s a sniper on the Capitals first line, not on the Russian front line.

  10. Marticyde

My problem with this is people call him a supporter of the war because he didnt really comment against it. So they’re basically just assuming.

It’s the equivalent of someone, who’s not a suspect, refusing to talk to the police without a lawyer…and people assuming he’s the murderer because he didnt claim that he’s innocent.

He’s just protecting himself. He might be a supporter but no ones has any valid reason to be 100% sure he is. It’s probably a really difficult situation to be in with how ruthless that POS Putin can be. I personnaly give Ovi the benefit of the doubt.

  11. chifa12397

What fucking pussies. Little Canadian bitches.

  12. MunchmaquichiCaps

Sports net didn’t reach out when my mom passed so they clearly were happy it happened. Fuck them!!!

  13. AxileAspen

Heaven fucking forbid the guy not want to ruin his chances of ever returning to Russia. I really fucking hate what journalism has become.

  14. crispycring

I wish he would take down his insta pfp. It would shut a lot of the crap up. And a tweet is a tweet, who gives a fuck, this « story » will be over by the evening. r/hockey eats up every Ovi milestone anyways lol

  15. kaliyuga88

It reads like your standard post on r/hockey. First sentence is celebrating his achievements and the next sentence is condemning him for supporting the leader of his home country. It’s cringe.

  16. nystrom19

Ovechkin openly supported Putin during the last election and has promoted Putin via social media etc over the years. Putin loves hockey and Ovie is his guy whether you like it or not.

Ovechkin can change his tune and say he’s “not political and that he wants peace everywhere” but it’s just to avoid media scrutiny.

Russians and ukraine people are dying by the thousands. Millions have had their lives uprooted and ruined. Ovechkin still gets to earn millions in the US playing the sport Putin loves.

Just a few weeks ago, the US had to trade the merchant of death for a WNBA player. There are still Americans in Russian prisons! How wild is that?!

Where’s the logic in all this???

  17. DirtiestOfMikes889

I dunno about this one. If I was in his shoes I would be a supporter also, so non of my family winds up dead. All his family and relatives are back in Russia. Sportsnet is looking for some click bait.

  18. DirtiestOfMikes889

Also journalist should be forced to post their name or alias

  19. ShenValleyUnitedFan

He supported Putin in the past, yes. Have not heard any comments from him at all pertaining to Ukraine.

  20. BRGrunner

Love it, it needs to be called out

  21. Chronicbudz

Fuck Ukraine, the most Corrupt country on the planet and we are currently laundering money through it.

  22. ConfusedKanye

The key here is most Russian citizens don’t get much a choice in whether or not they support the regime lol. His mother and father live in Russia. Family and friends live in Russia. Don’t rock the boat with Putin when it comes to that lol.

  23. Exciting_Ad4264

I’ve loved ovie since day one but I agree. If he wasn’t an 800 goal scorer I’m sure he would see some kind of repercussion. And since most Russians I know of in the NHL have denounced putin I can only assume when there’s talk of not allowing Russians into international play I believe they *mostly* mean him. But that’s a bit of a stretch

  24. JahIsGucci

What a load of shit article. It’s always politics that people never stop yapping about. Complete clown show shit.

I hope Ovi continues to score goals and break Gretzky’s record.

  25. Desa0802

I mean it’s true. He’s vowed his loyalty for Putin throughout the years. He’s a DC sports hero but let’s not let that erase the fact that he clearly supports a murderous dictator

  26. Drtydrdsdiagnosis

He is most likely having to support so his family doesn’t get killed.. give the man a break.

  27. _The_Bear

Should we also shit on every player who voted for trump since they also support Putin?

  28. vladdydaddy146

To be fair isn’t it his business who he supports? And if he’s Russian then all he’s ever known is what the government has told him….. I say stop trying to create controversy and DONT CANCEL OVI

  29. vladdydaddy146

To be fair isn’t it his business who he supports? And if he’s Russian then all he’s ever known is what the government has told him….. I say stop trying to create controversy and DONT CANCEL OVI

  30. vladdydaddy146

To be fair isn’t it his business who he supports? And if he’s Russian then all he’s ever known is what the government has told him….. I say stop trying to create controversy

  31. 4x4_gump

I’m a fan because he’s hockey player, not because of his politics… I’m sure I wouldn’t like anything or anyone if I based my preference on politics.

  32. Crystal_ballsack

Sportnet is trying to create the controversy and bring politics into this.

  33. Double_Reward230

OVIE dies in a sense support terrorism

  34. BoysenberryAshamed59

lol Ovi simps. You take the bad with the good, cherry pickers. Sportsnet isn’t trying to spark controversy; a majority of Canadians just think that Putin and his coterie of ass lickers can get fucked. It just so happens that one of those ass lickers is a generational goal scorer.

  35. Exciting-Rub-6006

Sports net can do what they want

Also fuck sports net and fuck Putin

  36. R0PE_ACCESS

Omg who fucking cares. The internet has literally killed everyone’s brain. “He supports Russia, I don’t wike him.” You people have turned into a bunch of fucking middle school girls. Remember when people were allowed to have opinions…and still be awesome athletes…and the two don’t need to merge?? Fuck people like you.

  37. Ethan_Blank687

You try criticizing a dictator when most of your family could get arrested or worse because you do. He has no choice.

  38. TheOriginalMrSmith23

I like the honesty. Ovi is a great goal scorer and a horrible human being. Why do people get so upset and only ever want to have a one dimensional conversation? That kind of blind eye is how we end up with million dollar settlements in the World Juniors.

  39. ihatereddit_69420__

    Tweet is dogshit. Move on

  40. Reilman79

To be fair, I don’t think he’s specifically declared his support of this invasion of Ukraine, but yeah definitely a Putin supporter.

IDK what to think. I guess I don’t care that much. Like it’d definitely be better if he didn’t, but if I’m honest I’m not losing sleep over it.

Maybe because I’ve personally seen all the good he’s done for the DMV area, that subconsciously I’m willing to overlook his other shortcomings. Like if my dad told me he was a secret serial killer, I’d probably keep his secret.

Final note: full support for the people of Ukraine, I hope they kick Russia’s teeth in!

  41. Jarteast

He’s one of only a few russian players that have at least said they don’t want war. His family is undeniably tied to the Russian state and it’s an imposible situation for him and other Russian hockey players to denounce or stay silent about Putin without ramifications. Let the guy play fucking hockey and be happy youre not the greatest goal scorer in the world right now having to worry about being associated to a sadistic tyrannical dictator that could murder your family on a whim.

  42. Arasuil

I don’t see anything wrong with it. I celebrate every Ovi goal and every Ukrainian victory in the field. I hope Ovi passes Gretz and I hope Ukraine reclaims all of its territory including Crimea.

People are just in large part incapable of using nuance. I still love America despite the fact that basically every president from FDR to present has been a war criminal.

  43. TeriyakiTendies

sportsnet trying to drum up the holiday clicks. jog on sportsnet you absolute twats and let us enjoy this awesome HOCKEY milestone.

  44. Joshottas

You can easily separate what he accomplishes athletically from who he supports politically. It’s a dumb take and a hypocritical one considering the support our own military, police force, and court system continuously get, despite the atrocities they have committed over the years
