34 years ago today. I felt bad for Steve Smith for sure; but I had no sympathy for his hot-shot teammates.
The Oilers had over 14 minutes of hockey and needed to score only ONE GOAL to keep themselves alive in that game, and they couldn't do it!
Besides; what were the Oilers doing in a seventh game against an apparently inferior Calgary team? Oiler fans can't blame their team's severed dynasty entirely on Smith.
Everybody blames Steve, but when the goalie sauntered through Steve's passing lane with his back turned, he took away valuable inches Steve needed to move that puck to an open man on the distant wall. The game is so fast, teammates without the puck need to do everything they can to make it easier for each other.
This is the kind of stuff that happens to perennially bad teams that make the playoffs and get deep. One mistake haunts them, like the Bill Buckner incident when the Red Sox were in their drought. At least this happened in the middle of a 3 championships in 4 years, so it's not a hard pill to swallow. As a Texas Rangers fan I'll never get over Nelson Cruz not catching that ball that would have won us the World Series. We never got close again.
I am an Islanders fan, and I remember watching this game vividly. I knew right then that no NHL team would win 4 Cups in a row ever again, because if any team was going to do it after the Isles, it would have been the Gretzky-Messier Oilers.
this blunder happened tonight in Game 2 2021 Stanley Cup Finals – Tampa Bays 3rd goal was almost identical with the Habs player passing backwards behind his own net right on the stick of Tampa Bays forward who shot it off of Price’s skate into the net.
I always loved Edmonton as a hockey team since Cleveland never had one. I was watching that game on satellite and was amazed that it happened. . But thankfully they won the next year and as usual, class personified, Wayne Gretzky handed the Stanley Cup to Steve Smith to skate. Class players(s) and franchise.
And Smith was told that his career wouldn't be remembered for this own goal. Frankly, it's the ONLY thing that I do remember about his career to this day. Na na na na, hey hey goodbye.

His 23rd birthday

At the final buzzer. Steve was crying. His face red with tears. Also broked his stick as he slammed it onto the boards
At least it wasn't at home.
After he left Edmonton and came back to play on other teams anytime he touched the puck the entire building would start screaming shooooot
Bill Buckner of hockey
On his birthday, inadvertently helping your team’s biggest rival…ouch.
Who is here after Nate Schmidt?
Why is Mcdonald celebrating as if it was some personal effort of his or his teammates?

If this happen to islanders the fans would kill the guy lol
Calgary went on to the Stanley Cup Finals and lost to the Montreal Canadiens.
Here after watching Bear give away the puck to cause us to be kicked out of the playoffs. This helps me feel a little better. Lol

That's the ultimate "Dang-it"

Not even close compared to Marc Bergevin throwing the puck into his own net in STL.
Wow I had no idea it was game 7
Messier dirty player n g a y

Who is here in may 2022 because of the upcoming battle of Alberta? GO OILERS!

And the Canadien would beat Calgary and win the Stanly cup
I’d DEFINITELY hang myself if that happened to me! 😂
Even the other team felt bad for him!
Come on bro it was on his birthday 😭
Had the Oilers won that year they would have tied the Habs with 5 cups in a row……………so yeah he did sort of screw the Oilers out of a rare opportunity.
It was a great day to be a Flames fan
UrinatingTree (pretending to be Oilers management): They may be terrible all in all but do you remember the 80s. (Then shows Smiths own goal)
