if dallas could get Bo without Stankoven im in for it Bourque is solid af but if we can make the team better right now go for it stars have quite a few underrated prospects that would make moving on from bourque less painful

It's hard to look at it cup half full when some of these games the Stars had the lead only to lose in OT. I would get it if they were mostly come back wins but that's not the case. I also worry about their consistency, as I always have. Can't be losing to teams like the ducks or other bad teams AND be losing on OT if we want home ice advantage, which we do.
I think Vancouver would bite if we offered up Gurianov, Khudobin, Borque, and our 2nd this year, or 1st next year. They would not have to retain any of Horvat's salary, get a roster player and a star prospect plus a decent pick. It would free up the cap space for us as well. This reminds me of Iginla for Nieuwendyk.
The asking price it would take to get Bo Horvat isn’t worth it with him being a rental and the Stars not having the cap space to sign him next year. According to insiders, Vancouver is seeking 3 young, talented players including a top prospect (as opposed to picks) since their goal is to retool instead of rebuild. Giving up a significant haul for a guy who will stick around for less than a full season will be detrimental to the team long-term and leave them with holes it may take a significant period of time to recover from. Especially with vets like Seguin, Benn, and Pavelski nearing the end of their careers; and the Stars lengthy process spent developing prospects – it usually takes a couple of years or so before a one begins to see consistent playing time in the NHL (timeline varying for each). Right now, you have guys in Borque, Stankoven and Harley who can help ease the transition and be key contributors in the Stars’ success for years to come.
Additionally, keeping young assets on the roster is vital for a few reasons: 1. Fan engagement. Young, talented players keep existing fans actively engaged as vets age and their play declines while attracting new ones. 2. Talent. (Obvious), 3. Cost-Effective. Young prospects are cheap and help teams maintain cap integrity while retaining more expensive, star talent. This helps teams remain competitive. (No coincidence that 3 of the 4 teams left in the Super Bowl race this past weekend all have QBs on rookie contracts, allowing GMs to stack the other areas of the team with talent.) Rookie contracts like Johnston’s help make it possible to keep Hintz, Robo, Miro, Otto, Benn, Seguin, and Pavelski under one roof.
Most times, across all sports, deals like this aren’t beneficial to clubs. The Florida Panthers who traded a haul for a rental last year, are a good example of this. They have been mediocre this past season. The Lakers, while they won a Bubble championship, has operated at a highly dysfunctional level and produced mediocre results since trading away picks and young talent to chase short term ambitions. The Mavs who gave up several first RD picks for KP (who was traded last year after the experiment failed), is another ex. They in a poor cap position, placing them in a position of letting the 2nd best player on the team walk in FA for nothing after making the conference finals, but, they have limited draft stock. Not only can they not afford to bring in a big name during the FA off-season, but, because of the KP trade, they don’t even have the draft stock to trade for one. To compound the issue further, their drafting technique (unlike the Stars) has not been the greatest, which means the poorly constructed team mostly consists of vets pass the age of 30, outside of Luka and a couple of prospects. One bad trade or a set of bad decisions can set a team back for years.
Bo Horvat is talented, but, trading for him during a career year when he is seeking a max contract (and the Stars have little odds of being able to resign him), makes little sense long-term considering what you would have to relinquish for his services. Why should another team benefit from the Stars due diligence in the drafting process? The benefits don’t outweigh the costs.
I am not saying the Stars shouldn’t add to the team, just that the response should be measured, possible long-term consequences limited.
